What has been written about burnout syndrome in prison officers?

OBJECTIVES: Working with prison inmates involves constant contact with a stigmatized population, in hostile conditions where the working env … rs related to the work that these workers do, combined with the organizational shortages present in prisons, impose stress that leads to burnout syndrome in these employees. To reduce the syndrome, structural changes are needed in the institutions, as well as the strengthening of personal and professional skills and the social integration of prison worker …

[Mind-body relaxation in prison : A beneficial complement for the management of stress and anxiety].

The prison environment can be stressful for imprisoned persons. Prison health services primarily offer medication to help individuals cope with stress and other related symptoms, such as restlessness, anxiety or insomnia. Mind-body relaxation techniques can be complementary or an alternative to medication to manage stress or anxiety. We conducted an exploratory study in a post-trial facility using a mixed method approach drawing on the principles of participatory action research to assess the perceived benefits of a mind-body relaxation intervention led by nurses.

Risk of COVID-19 infection among prison staff in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Multiple large outbreaks of COVID-19 have been documented in prisons and jails across regions of the world, with hazardous environmental conditions amplify the risks of exposure for both incarcerated people and correctional staff. The objectives of this study are to estimate the cumulative prevalence of COVID-19 cases among U.S. prison staff over time and compare it to the prison inmate population and the general U.S. population, overall, and to examine risk of COVID-19 infection among prison staff across jurisdictions. METHODS: We use publicly available data (April 22, 2020 to Ja…

Equivalence of care? Accessibility and availability of dialysis services for older prisoners in Switzerland.

PURPOSE: According to the principle of equivalence of care, health care in prison has to be of the same standard and quality as in the general population. This study aims to determine the geographic accessibility of dialysis services for older prisoners and the older general population in Switzerland and whether accessibility and availability of dialysis care are equivalent. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Spatial accessibility analysis incorporated four different data types: population data, administrative data, street network data and addresses of prisons and hemodialysis services. FINDINGS: …

Use of telehealth to increase treatment access for prisoners with chronic hepatitis C.

Prisons remain a priority population in the treatment of hepatitis C (HCV) in Australia. To improve treatment uptake, we created a novel telehealth-based model of care for prisoners with HCV that is both cost-effective and requires minimal infrastructure. Over a period of 30 months, a total of 332 patients was initiated on treatment, achieving a per protocol sustained virological response (SVR12) rate of 91%. A large number (29%) of patients was lost to follow up after release from prison - highlighting the vital opportunity for HCV treatment during incarceration. We propose that similar model…

Suicide in prison and after release: a 17-year national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: People in prison have an extremely high risk of suicide. The aim of this paper is to describe all suicides in the Norwegian prison population from 2000 to 2016, during and following imprisonment; to investigate the timing of suicides; and to investigate the associations between risk of suicide and types of crime. METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian Prison Release study (nPRIS) including complete national register data from the Norwegian Prison Register and the Norwegian Cause of Death Register in the period 1.1.2000 to 31.12.2016, consisting of 96,856 individuals. All suicide

"I have to be a man for my son": The narrative uses of fatherhood in prison.

Research on incarcerated fathers tends to accentuate the harmful familial consequences of parental incarceration and discuss how having children might prompt incarcerated fathers to desist from crime. Less attention has focused on how narratives of fatherhood shape the day-to-day dynamics of incarceration. Drawing on 93 qualitative interviews with incarcerated fathers in Western Canada, we focus specifically on our participants' parenting narratives. Such narratives are significant interventions in the world, allowing incarcerated fathers to frame their identities in particular ways while simu

An Experimental Study of a Peer-Facilitated Violence Prevention Program for Women in Prison.

The literature has shown a strong correlation between victimization and violence. As the majority of treatment programs for violence and the associated research have been focused on men, it is vital that services are also oriented to the needs of women who perpetrate violence. Beyond Violence (BV) was developed to fill the gap in violence prevention programming for justice-involved women with histories of violence victimization and perpetration. This randomized controlled trial reports the results of a peer-facilitated model of the BV program implemented in a women's prison. Women volunteered

Solitary Anosmia/Ageusia in Prison: Results From a COVID-19 Cluster.

A prison setting with its congregate environment is at high risk for widespread transmission of respiratory illnesses. Identifying COVID-19 cases as early as possible and isolating cases and tracing contacts is critical to halting the spread of this disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added new loss of taste or smell to its list of symptoms and, initially, only if associated with at least one of six other symptoms. The CDC has since updated the guidance to remove this qualifier as of May 13, 2020. New loss of taste or smell, alone, can help to identify COVID-19 cases.

Disseminated Cryptococcus in an immunocompetent patient due to prison yard pigeon exposure.

Opportunistic infection by Cryptococcus is one of the most common occurrences in patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) disease or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS); however, it is a very rare discovery in the immunocompetent. This encapsulated, aerobic fungus can be found in bird droppings, the soil, or on trees, and breathing the spores can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, skin lesions, or disseminate throughout the body. We discuss the unique presentation of an immunocompetent former inmate who was admitted to the hospital due to symptoms of dyspnea and fever. After

The compelling case for low-violence-risk preclusion in American prison policy.

This article recommends the development of broad policies of preclusion regarding the use of incarceration for offenders who are highly unlikely to commit a violent crime in the future. The proposal builds on the new Model Penal Code: Sentencing's provision on the limited utilitarian purposes of incarceration. Such low-violence-risk-preclusion strategies (LVRPs) would stand on the most powerful predictive capabilities of today's risk assessment technology. If implemented properly, there is reason to believe that substantial drops in prison rates could be realized in most states. The preclusion

Improving sexual healthcare delivery for men in prison: A nurse-led initiative.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The study aim was to develop and evaluate a nurse-led sexual health service and health promotion intervention for men in prison. BACKGROUND: Men in prison are particularly marginalised members of our society, negatively impacting on their ability to making healthy choices. In relation to sexual health, prison provides an opportunity for curative and preventive care, for an otherwise often hard-to-reach, priority population. DESIGN: Practice development, audit and evaluation. METHODS: Employing a practice development and participatory methodology, we empowered prison nur
