OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of and risk factors for wound complications in women who sustain obstetric anal sphincter injuries.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of women who sustained obstetric anal sphincter injuries during delivery of a full-term neonate between September 2011 and August 2013. Women were seen in the urogynecology clinic within 1 week of delivery and at 2, 6, and 12 weeks postpartum for perineal wound assessment. The pathophysiology of postpartum urinary retention (PUR) is still unclear. The prevalence rate varies with the definition used and the literature discusses various risk factors. Bladder catheterization is the treatment of choice, but the best way to do it is not ascertained. Long-term sequelae seem to be rare. There are no widely accepted preventive measures. Our 2 cases illustrate that it is important to prevent PUR not only by avoiding the known risk factors, but also by additionally asking for signs of voiding dysfunction postpartum.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the UK and is also a major cause of long-term morbidity.
