Elucidating the Shape of Current Transients in Electrochemical Resistive-Pulse Sensing of Single Liposomes.

Electrochemical resistive-pulse (ERP) sensing with conductive carbon nanopipettes (CNPs) has recently been developed and employed for the detection of single liposomes and biological vesicles, and for the analysis of redox molecules contained in such vesicles. However, the origins of different shapes of current transients produced by the translocation of single vesicles through the CNP remain poorly understood. Herein, we report extensive finite-element simulations of both portions of an ERP transient, the current blockage by a vesicle approaching and passing through the pipet orifice and the …

Brain blood flow pulse analysis may help to recognize individuals who suffer from hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is often associated with altered cerebral blood flow. Recent research with the use of the ultrasonic method suggests specific changes in the shape of cardiac-related cerebral arterial blood volume (CaBV) pulses in NPH patients. Our study aims to provide a quantitative analysis of the shape of CaBV pulses, estimated based on transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) in NPH patients and healthy individuals. METHODS: The CaBV pulses were estimated using TCD cerebral blood flow velocity signals recorded from probable NPH adults and age-matched heal…

Retinal arterial-venous pulse delay: a new specific marker for a carotid-cavernous fistula.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to describe ocular blood flow changes in eyes affected by a carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) using lase … low velocity decreased during systole (and in some cases momentarily stopped), leading to a delayed pulse with a greater amplitude in the venules than in fellow eyes and normal controls after normalizing to the arteriole amplitude (1.71 ± 0.3 vs 0.54 ± 0.03 vs 0.59 ± 0.02; p = 8.0E-12). This specific AV delay could also be identified in a scanning laser …

Brachial-femoral pulse wave velocity in 2-4-year-old children: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) progression occurs across the lifespan. However, available measures of CVD risk in young children are limited. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) is a gold-standard, noninvasive measure of CVD risk that has been studied in children ages 6-18 years. Yet, cfPWV has been measured to a lesser extent in younger children, a population whose temperament or attention span may pose unique challenges. Brachial-femoral PWV (bfPWV) may be feasible, more acceptable, and could provide similar CVD risk assessment to cfPWV in younger children. This study aimed…

Herpes simplex keratitis following Smart Pulse Technology assisted transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) is a rare and sight-threatening complication following refractive surgery. SmartSurfACE surgery is the result of combining transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (trans-PRK) with Smart Pulse Technology (SPT) to diminish surface irregularities of the residual stromal bed after surgery with less pain, faster re-epithelialization, and better postoperative visual acuity. In this article, we report the first case of HSK following SmartSurf ACE without history of herpetic eye disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman underwent bilateral SmartSur…

Acute liver injury following methylprednisolone pulse therapy: 13 cases from a prospectively collected cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) remains a challenging diagnosis requiring exclusion of other causes of liver injury, concise medical history taking to identify potential causative medication and creation of a plausible temporal relation to attribute said liver injury to a potentially hepatotoxic agent. In spite of corticosteroids being considered an effective treatment for DILI in some patients, methylprednisolone (MPS) has been associated with liver injury of varying severity. METHODS: We analyzed data of our prospective study on potentially hepatotoxic drugs (NCT0235345

Cosmetic considerations for placement of deep brain stimulation pulse generator: the submammary subfascial approach.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for a number of debilitating neurological diseases. However, the placement of an implantable pulse generator (IPG) can lead to significant cosmetic concerns for some patients. METHODS: We present a subfascial technique of DBS IPG implantation under the breast using a more concealed scar location. The technique is illustrated in a female patient who favored a more aesthetic placement of the DBS to treat essential tremor. Relevant literature of this approach from both breast augmentation and cardiac pacemaker implantation was …

The Complementarity of Amino Acids in Cooked Pulse/Cereal Blends and Effects on DIAAS.

The aim was to study the complementary effect between cereals and pulses on protein quality. The values for the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) in cooked cereals and pulses, given alone, and blends of cooked cereals and pulses, were determined. True ileal digestibility (TID) values of amino acids for adult humans were obtained. It is difficult to determine ileal amino acid digestibility in humans directly, and for this reason, the growing pig is often used to obtain such values, as a preferred animal model. Seven growing pigs fitted with a T-cannula at the terminal ileum were…

Changes in AZGP1 Serum Levels and Correlation With Pulse Wave Velocity After Kidney Transplantation.

Background: Zinc-alpha 2-glycoprotein (AZGP1), a secreted protein with ubiquitous tissue expression, has been controversially linked to the risk of cardiovascular disease. In a cohort of kidney transplant recipients, we measured serum AZGP1 levels after transplantation over a 2 year period and tested for an association with pulse wave velocity as an important parameter indicating future cardiovascular events. Methods: Annual blood sampling and pulse wave velocity measurements were longitudinally performed in 113 kidney transplant recipients. AZGP1 was measured in serum samples using standard E…

Comparison of changes in pulse wave velocity in patients on peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death of dialyzed patients. Aortic stiffness, evaluated by the carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is now considered as a prognostic factor for cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney diseases. The peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients had significantly stiffer arteries. cfPWV was 9.12 ± 2.7 m/s in PD patients without significant correlation compared to hemodialysis (HD) patients (8.97 ± 2.52 m/s). In the univariate study, we found a statistically significant correlation between PWV and age (P = 0), between the pulse wave vel…

Magnesium concentration influences size and pulse rate in the upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea andromeda.

Magnesium is involved in a variety of physiological processes in marine animals and is known to be deleterious in both excess and deficiency. The effects of magnesium concentration ranging from 700 mg/L (low), 1344 mg/L (control), and 2000 mg/L (high) on size and pulse rate in upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea andromeda) medusae were examined in two separate 28-day trials. Exposure to low magnesium resulted in significantly (p < .05) higher pulse rates and decreased bell diameter and also produced oral arm degradation. Exposure to high magnesium resulted in significantly (p < .05) lower pulse r…

Ramped pulse shapes are more efficient for cochlear implant stimulation in an animal model.

In all commercial cochlear implant (CI) devices, the electric stimulation is performed with a rectangular pulse that generally has two phases of opposite polarity. To date, developing new stimulation strategies has relied on the efficacy of this shape. Here, we investigate the potential of a novel stimulation paradigm that uses biophysically-inspired electrical ramped pulses. Using electrically-evoked auditory brainstem response (eABR) recordings in mice, we found that less charge, but higher current level amplitude, is needed to evoke responses with ramped shapes that are similar in amplitude…

Control of Functional Electrical Stimulation Systems Using Simultaneous Pulse Width, Amplitude, and Frequency Modulations.

BACKGROUND: One significant challenge of developing a controller for functional electrical stimulation systems is the time-variant nonlinear … to improve the joint controllability and muscle endurance. The presented control method determines pulse width (PW), amplitude, and frequency of the electrical stimulation signal, synchronously. Three different modulations are applied for control of the knee joint to show the superiority of the proposed modulation. METHODS: The stimulation intensity i …

Giant magnetocaloric effect in nanostructured Fe-Co-P amorphous alloys enabled through pulse electrodeposition.

In this work, amorphous Fe-Co-P films prepared by electrodeposition are found to exhibit dense microstructures with amorphous grains. Through a pulse electrodeposition synthesis route, complex microstructures containing nano-sized grains are obtained in the amorphous alloy films. The nanostructured Fe-Co-P amorphous alloys show superior soft magnetic and magnetocaloric properties as compared with those of other iron-based soft magnetic amorphous alloys reported to date. The coercive field of samples can be as small as 1.6 Oe at room temperature. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of the ternary a…
