3D cone beam (CBCT) in evaluation of frontal recess: findings in youth population.

BACKGROUND: Frontal recess is the anatomical region most difficult to manage in endoscopic frontal sinus surgery due to the extreme variability of the cell patterns that may be observed in this area. CT has always been the gold standard in preoperative evaluation, but especially in the assessment of the causes of frontal recess obstruction and surgical failure. In recent years, this accredited and reliable method has been complemented by computed tomography cone beam (CBCT), which provides similarly detailed anatomical information with a lower dose of radiation. AIM: The purpose of this paper

Does three-dimensional imaging offer a financial benefit for treating maxillary molars with furcation involvement? A pilot clinical case series.

AIM: To assess the financial benefit of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for the treatment options of maxillary molars including periodontal surgery and extraction followed by implant placement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve patients with generalized chronic periodontitis were recruited, and CBCT was performed in maxillary molars (n = 22) with clinical furcation involvement and increased probing pocket depths. Treatment recommendations were either based on conventional periodontal diagnostics (clinical examinations and periapical radiographs), or based on the additional CBCT data. Clinical

Dynamic CT perfusion imaging for the detection of crossed cerebellar diaschisis in acute ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Although the detection of crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) by means of different imaging modalities is well described, little is known about its diagnosis by computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging. We investigated the detection rate of CCD by CTP imaging and the factors related to CCD on CTP images in patients with acute ischemic stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT perfusion maps of cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow (CBF), mean transit time (MTT), and time-to-peak (TTP) obtained from 81 consecutive patients affected by an acute ischemic stroke were retrospectiv

CT angiography of renal arteriovenous fistulae: a report of two cases.

Renal arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are rare abnormal communications between the arterial and venous circulations that can be congenital or acquired. We describe the multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) appearance of 2 cases of renal AVF, one with the cirsoid and one with the aneurysmal subtype, and the impact of these findings on therapeutic decision making and treatment follow-up.

A Deep Learning Model for Three-Dimensional Determination of Whole Thoracic Vertebral Bone Mineral Density from Noncontrast Chest CT: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

Background Recent studies have investigated how deep learning (DL) algorithms applied to CT using two-dimensional (2D) segmentation (sagittal or axial planes) can calculate bone mineral density (BMD) and predict osteoporosis-related outcomes. Purpose To determine whether TotalSegmentator, an nnU-net algorithm, can measure three-dimensional (3D) vertebral body BMD across consistently imaged thoracic levels (T1-T10) at any conventional, noncontrast chest CT examination. Materials and Methods This study is a secondary analysis of a multicenter (n = 6) prospective cohort, the Multi-Ethnic Study of

Deep Learning-Driven Multimodal Fusion Model for Prediction of Middle Cerebral Artery Aneurysm Rupture Risk.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The decision to treat unruptured intracranial aneurysms remains a clinical dilemma. Middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms represent a prevalent subtype of intracranial aneurysms. This study aims to develop a multimodal fusion deep learning model for stratifying rupture risk in MCA aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled internal cohort and two external validation datasets with 578 and 51 MCA aneurysms, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of rupture. Aneurysm morphological para

Optimizing coronary CT angiography with spectral dual-layer CT: motion-compensated virtual monoenergetic imaging achieves 50% contrast dose reduction in a phantom study.

Reduced contrast media (CM) dose at elevated heart rates (HRs) poses a challenge for coronary artery disease (CAD) assessment. Using a dynamic phantom, we evaluated the performance of a vendor-specific coronary motion-compensated reconstruction (MCR) at various simulated HRs and reduced CM dose in low virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). A clinical CCTA protocol was used to image a 5-mm artificial coronary artery, filled with 100% (400 Hounsfield units (HU)) and 50% CM dose, using a robotic arm for translation at six velocities (0-50 mm/s, 1

Association of regional myocardial conduction velocity with the distribution of hypoattenuation on contrast-enhanced perfusion computed tomography in patients with postinfarct ventricular tachycardia.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging has been shown to be beneficial for identification of the ventricular tachycardia (VT) substrate before catheter ablation. Contrast-enhanced perfusion multidetector computed tomography (CEP-MDCT) is more generalizable to clinical practice, and wall thickness and regional hypoenhancement on CEP-MDCT can identify potential substrate sites, albeit with decreased specificity. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between wall thickness and attenuation on CEP-MDCT with local conduction velocity (CV) and electrogram abnor

3D CT cinematic rendering of mycotic aneurysms.

Mycotic aneurysms are uncommon but emergent conditions in which infection of a vessel leads to a contained rupture. Progression to frank rupture, thrombosis, distal embolization, and death can occur. The widespread availability of computed tomography (CT) and its ability to obtain high-resolution, contrast-enhanced, volumetric images rapidly has made it the modality of choice for evaluating mycotic aneurysms. Three-dimensional CT visualizations can provide important information to surgeons and interventionalists prior to attempting repair of these lesions. In this case series, we demonstrate t

Myocardial density analysis utilizing automated myocardial defect analysis software on resting 320-detector MDCT.

Cardiac CT myocardial perfusion is an emerging tool utilizing differences in myocardial density of ischemic compared to normal myocardium. We sought to document the contrast enhanced density profile of myocardial segments subtended by severely stenotic coronary arteries on rest (non stress) cardiac CT imaging, and compare the density with identical segments without ischemic disease. 100 cardiac CT studies were identified resulting in 25 normal patients, 37 with severe left anterior descending artery stenosis, 14 with severe left circumflex artery stenosis, and 24 with severe right coronary art

Three-dimensional computed tomography analysis of the left gastric vein in a pancreatectomy.

BACKGROUND: During a pancreatectomy, the left gastric vein (LGV) has an important role in the venous drainage of the stomach (total pancreatectomy, left splenopancreatectomy, pancreatoduodenectomy with venous resection and pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy). Pre-operative knowledge of the LGV's termination is necessary for adequate protection of this vein during dissection. The objective of the present study was to analyse the location of the LGV's termination in a patient population and facilitate its identification in at-risk situations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Abdominal computed to
