We describe a case of 20-year-old woman with visual impairment in her left eye. Her left visual acuity was 0.07 and an ophthalmoscopic examination demonstrated bilateral intermediate uveitis (IU). A neurological examination on admission revealed lower nasal quadrantanopsia in her left eye and an exaggerated right patellar tendon reflex. A T2-weighted MRI showed multiple high-intensity lesions in the bilateral periventricular region, corpus callosum, medulla. A short T1 inversion recovery MRI also showed a swollen left retrobulbar optic nerve and posterior thoracic cord lesion at Th 9 level. Th

CASE SUMMARY: A 16-year-old neutered female domestic shorthair cat was referred for chronic history of reluctance to jump, stiffness of the tail and lower back pain. Mild pelvic limb ataxia, reduced perianal reflex and lumbosacral discomfort were present on neurological examination. On magnetic resonance imaging, a well-defined rounded structure of 3 mm in diameter was identified on the right dorsal aspect of the epidural space at L7-S1, causing displacement of the cauda equina. The lesion was hyperintense to spinal cord parenchyma on T2-weighted images and hypointense on T1-weighted images, c

Contralateral acoustic stimulation has been shown to produce a suppressive effect on the 2F1-F2 distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). According to reports by other studies, there is a frequency-specific suppressive region between 1 and 2kHz when the contralateral broadband or narrowband noise stimulation contains energy close to or near the F2 frequencies in that region. In general the broader the bandwidth of the noise stimulation, the greater is the suppressive effect. A frequency-sensitive region between 1 and 2kHz has also been suggested as narrowband noises with center frequenc

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To present the ophthalmological and electrophysiological characteristics of three darkly pigmented, female patients with misrouting and foveal hypoplasia. One of the patients had primary ciliary dyskinesia and situs inversus totalis (Kartagener syndrome).
METHODS: Fundus photographs were taken and the angles at which the main temporal arterial branches leave the optic nerve head (ONH) were analysed. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed through the presumed foveal region. Pattern onset visually evoked potentials (VEPs) (check sizes 60', 40/400 ms) were recorded and

The simulation of unilateral deafness is very rare. Objective findings are of special interest if it happens. A patient with alleged deafness on the left-hand side due to commotio cerebri was treated in our hospital. Pure tone audiometry showed deafness on the left-hand side and normal hearing on the right-hand side. However, stapedius reflexes were found ipsilaterally left as well as contralaterally right, at 0.5 to 2 kHz with a stimulation of approximately 90 dB SPL. Transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were measured. The TEOAE

BACKGROUND: Lumbar ligamentum flavum hematoma (LFH) is a rare cause of nerve root and/or cauda equina compression which is commonly treated using microsurgical laminectomy and posterior fixation. However, technological advances may allow for less invasive options to be used.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 70-year-old female with lower back and right lower extremity radicular pain without relevant medical history. Muscle strength and tendon reflexes were normal. Lumbar computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a lumbar dural sac and nerve root compression due to lumbar canal

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that margin-reflex distance 1 (MRD1) on the day of surgery will be higher than the MRD1 measured at the in-clinic consult visit among patients undergoing blepharoptosis repair due to an increased sympathetic drive.
METHODS: Patients evaluated for involutional blepharoptosis repair were prospectively enrolled over a 12-month period in this single-center, self-controlled study. Three investigators independently determined MRD1 using cropped photos taken of patients at the in-clinic consult visit and on the day of surgery. A difference in

The neuropeptide kisspeptin (Kiss) is crucial in regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. It is produced by two main groups of neurons in the hypothalamus: the rostral periventricular region around the third ventricle and the arcuate nucleus. Kiss is the peptide product of the KiSS-1 gene and serves as the endogenous agonist for the GPR54 receptor. The Kiss/GPR54 system functions as a critical regulator of the reproductive system. Thus, we examined the effect of intracerebroventricular administration of 3 μg of Kiss to the right lateral ventricle of ovariectomized rats primed with a

Blow-out fracture is usually caused by direct traumatic events in the periorbital area. But in this case, the authors introduce a case in which the medial orbital wall was fractured directly through the medial rectus muscle by high pressure air gun.A 38-year-old man was injured in his right periorbital area after being hit by high pressure air gun. He had mild ecchymosis and subconjunctival hemorrhage. He had a normal light reflex and intraocular pressure of 14 mm Hg. A facial computed tomography scan confirmed a blow-out fracture of the medial orbital floor with multiple extensive subcutaneou

A patient with a therapy-related acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), NPM1mut, and FLT3-ITD+ was treated with induction and consolidation with CPX-351, obtaining a complete response (CR) but minimal residual disease persisted positive. Later, she complained progressive burning leg pain, weakening of the right hand and leg muscles, associated with absence of osteotendinous leg reflexes. Examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) showed a meningeal relapse of AML. Moreover, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed 2 right meningeal implants of myeloid sarcoma and bone marrow revealed haematologic relap

BACKGROUND: Agenesis of the internal carotid artery (ICA) is a rare vascular anomaly that was first observed postmortem. Various anastomoses supply the distal vessels at the site of agenesis. Of these anastomoses, an intercavernous anastomosis is very rare. This paper presents a patient with ischemic stroke in whom we discovered left ICA agenesis and an ipsilateral intercavernous anastomosis.
CASE: A 58-year-old man with a history of myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus presented with sudden-onset difficulty in speaking, numbness on the left side of the face, and weakness of the left a

Oculoleptomeningeal amyloidosis is a rare manifestation of hereditary transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis. Here, we present the first case of leptomeningeal amyloidosis associated with the TTR variant Leu12Pro mutation in an African patient. A 43-year-old right-handed Nigerian man was referred to our centre with rapidly progressive neurological decline. He presented initially with weight loss, confusion, fatigue, and urinary and erectile dysfunction. He then suffered recurrent episodes of slurred speech with right-sided weakness. He went on to develop hearing difficulties and painless paraesthesia

Cerebral sinus vein thrombosis is rare in children. So far, only three other cases have been reported in a child with diabetes mellitus. This 10 year-old female presented with classic signs of diabetic ketoacidosis which resolved with standard fluid and insulin therapy. Headache persisted despite biochemical improvement and 6th nerve palsy became evident on Day 3. On Day 5, sudden deterioration in mental status to the point of coma with loss of airway protective reflexes prompted repeat imaging including magnetic resonance venography which demonstrated thrombosis of the superior sagittal, stra
