Seroprevalence and risk factors of peste des petits ruminants virus in goats in border areas of Bangladesh.

In border regions where small ruminants are lifelines, peste des petits ruminants (PPR) remains a silent killer for the small ruminants, undermining food security and rural economies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between June 2023 and February 2025 in Comilla, Kushtia, Meherpur and Panchagarh districts of Bangladesh. A total of 389 goat blood samples were collected and performed competitive ELISA for peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) antibody detection. Among the unvaccinated goats 39.34% (120/305) were found to be seropositive, whereas 48.8% (41/84) was observed in the vaccina…

Hepatitis E virus surveillance in wild ruminants from northwestern Italy: results of a three-year molecular survey.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is responsible for emerging foodborne zoonotic infections in Europe, which are primarily associated with genotype 3 and more sporadically to genotype 4. While domestic pigs and wild boars are recognized as the principal reservoirs, the epidemiological role of wild ruminants remains less clearly defined. Knowledge of the health status of wildlife is essential, not only to minimize potential risks to human health associated with the consumption of game meat, but also to study the spread of zoonotic diseases in the territory. This study investigated the presence of HEV inf…

Development and Validation of an RT-Droplet Digital PCR Assay for Detection of Peste des Petits Ruminants.

To achieve rapid, accurate, and quantitative detection of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), we aligned the available PPRV genomic sequences, screened for conserved regions, and designed specific primers and probes accordingly. An RT-droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) method was established, and a series of reaction conditions were optimized. Subsequently, the specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability of the method were subsequently evaluated. The results demonstrated that the RT-ddPCR method exhibited good specificity, with positive results obtained exclusively for PPRV and negative resul…

Molecular screening of Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Brucella in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting farm ruminants in Peninsular Malaysia.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous arachnids that parasitize both humans and animals. While considerable research in Malaysia has focused on bacterial detection in ticks, knowledge of tick-borne Anaplasma, Ehrlichia and Brucella in farm ruminants remains limited. In this study, 1,241 ticks comprising of four species (Rhipicephalus microplus, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, Haemaphysalis bispinosa, and Haemaphysalis wellingtoni) were collected from 674 farm ruminants across Peninsular Malaysia. The ticks were pooled and molecularly screened for Anaplasma and Ehrlichia using 16S rRNA gene primers,…

Pathological Features and Genotyping of Mycobacterium avium sub spp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in Small Ruminants in Saudi Arabia.

Johne's disease, caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), is endemic in Saudi Arabia and contributes to substantial production losses in small-ruminant herds. This study investigated MAP infection in 388 locally raised small ruminants (151 sheep and 237 goats) using IS900 real-time PCR (qPCR) on fecal samples and indirect ELISA on serum samples. Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining and pathological assessment were applied as supportive tools in necropsied cases. Overall, qPCR detected MAP DNA in 135/388 animals (34.8%), with higher positivity in goats (100/237; 42.1%) than in sheep …

Exploring thyroid function in main domestic ruminants: a scoping review of physio-anatomy, diseases and diagnostic tools.

While thyroid physiology has been studied in domestic ruminants, many uncertainties remain. In fact, this metabolism is rarely assessed in routine veterinary practice, and diseases of the thyroid gland or its metabolism are poorly documented in domestic ruminants. This scoping review aims to summarize current knowledge in anatomy, physiology, diseases, and diagnostic methods related to thyroid function in domestic ruminants. A structured research methodology was followed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. Four da…

Gastrointestinal parasites and molecular characterization of Eimeria spp. among imported small ruminants in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Omani market imports live sheep and goats from across the globe to meet the high human demand for fresh meat. However, this reliance on imports may increase the risk of introducing foreign pathogens despite the strict quarantine regulations. Therefore, we aimed to determine endoparasites among imported sheep and goats that may escape through the sole quarantine station in Muscat. For this purpose, 205 sheep and 47 goats' fecal samples were collected from animals imported from different countries at the Central Quarantine Station in Muscat between 2019 and 2020. The identification and quant

Epizootiology and mitochondrial genetic diversity of Taenia hydatigena in Nigerian small ruminants: Implications for one health control.

Taenia hydatigena is a globally distributed cestode of veterinary importance that infects canids (definitive hosts) and ungulate livestock (intermediate hosts). Although non-zoonotic, its transmission ecology overlaps with zoonotic taeniids, making surveillance relevant within a One Health framework. Its epidemiology and genetic diversity remain poorly understood in West Africa. Nigeria, with its large and mobile livestock populations, provides a critical setting for investigating parasite transmission and phylogeographic dynamics. We conducted a large-scale abattoir survey of small ruminants …

Morphological and molecular data confirm the occurrence of Paramphistomum leydeni (Trematoda: Paramphistomidae) in ruminants from Southern Brazil.

Species belonging to the family Paramphistomidae Fischoeder, 1901, commonly known as "rumen flukes", are a group of parasites frequently related to Brazilian livestock production. They inhabit the digestive tract of ruminants and have recognized pathogenicity during the early stages of infection, which can be responsible for economic losses. These trematodes are often associated with Southern Brazil, a region heavily focused on animal farming, which also makes it ideal for the life cycle of paramphistomes. Despite their aforementioned importance, studies regarding their distribution, molecular…

Efficiency of recombinant Ybgf in a double antigen-ELISA for the detection of Coxiella antibodies in ruminants.

Q fever is a zoonosis whose main reservoirs are domestic ruminants. Surveillance in these species is carried out mainly with serological tests, which, however, have limited diagnostic performance, and their manufacturing requires laboratories equipped with high biosafety requirements for antigen production. Recombinant ELISAs do not depend on these requirements and, being based on a single antigen, can reduce potential false positivity by identifying antibodies specific to a phase of infection. The aim of this study was to apply a new technology (dual antigen test) to a recombinant protein (Yb…
