Determinants of sleep problems in children with intellectual disability.

Children with intellectual disabilities are more likely to experience sleep disorders of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep breathing disorders than typically developing children. The present study examined risk factors for these sleep disorders in 447 children (aged 5-18 years), diagnosed with an intellectual disability and comorbid autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or Rett syndrome. Primary caregivers reported on their child's sleep using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), as well as medical comorbidities and functional abilities. Multivariat

Sleep disturbances and the At Risk Mental State: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: To synthesise and investigate how sleep disturbances relate to psychotic symptoms, functioning and Quality of Life (QoL) in At Risk Mental State (ARMS) youth. METHOD: A comprehensive search of six databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and CENTRAL) was conducted. Eligible studies provided data on sleep disturbances or disorders in ARMS patients. RESULTS: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 1962 ARMS patients) including 7 cross-sectional studies, 2 RCT's and 7 cohort studies. Narrative synthesis revealed that self-reported sleep (e.g., general disturban

Sleep Alterations in Female College Students with Migraines.

BACKGROUND: Many factors are thought to potentially trigger migraines, among which sleep disturbances are one of the most frequently reported. Both sleep disorders and migraines affect more women than men. This study aims to analyze sleep alterations in young adult women with migraines and how they are related to the presence, frequency, intensity, and disability of migraines in this population. METHODS: Fifty-one female university students with physician-diagnosed migraines and 55 healthy female university students completed surveys assessing demographic information and frequency, intensity,

The Role of Sleep Duration and Sleep Problems During Childhood in the Development of ADHD in Adolescence: Findings From a Population-Based Birth Cohort.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between sleep in early life and ADHD in adolescence. As a secondary analysis, we tested whether the associations may be specific to ADHD. Method: Data from 3,467 participants of the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort were used. Information on their sleep duration and problems was collected at 12, 24, and 48 months of age. ADHD diagnosis and hyperactivity/inattention problems were assessed with the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) among participants at 11 years of age. Results: Difficul

Movement disorders and sleep.

This article summarizes what is currently known about sleep disturbances in several movement disorders including Parkinson disease, essential tremor, parkinsonism, dystonia, Huntington disease, myoclonus, and ataxias. There is an association between movement disorders and sleep. In some cases the prevalence of sleep disorders is much higher in patients with movement disorder, such as rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder in Parkinson disease. In other cases, sleep difficulties worsen the involuntary movements. In many cases the medications used to treat patients with movement disorder dis

Sleep pathologies in depression and the clinical utility of polysomnography.

Abnormal sleep accompanies many psychiatric conditions, but has long been recognized as a particularly conspicuous feature of affective disorders. More than a mere epiphenomenon, the powerful link between sleep and mood regulation is most dramatically demonstrated by the high efficacy of sleep deprivation in alleviating depression. Indeed, the sleep abnormalities that accompany depression may be due to the same neuropathologies that are responsible for its mood and cognitive symptoms. This powerful link between sleep and mood regulation makes polysomnography (PSG) a useful window into the unde

Predicting Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety Using Smartphone and Wearable Data.

Background: Depression and anxiety are leading causes of disability worldwide but often remain undetected and untreated. Smartphone and wearable devices may offer a unique source of data to detect moment by moment changes in risk factors associated with mental disorders that overcome many of the limitations of traditional screening methods. Objective: The current study aimed to explore the extent to which data from smartphone and wearable devices could predict symptoms of depression and anxiety. Methods: A total of N = 60 adults (ages 24-68) who owned an Apple iPhone and Oura Ring were recruit

Network analysis of internet addiction and sleep disturbance symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is a behavioral addiction to problematic internet use. IA is associated with poorer sleep quality. Few studies to date, however, have explored the interactions between symptoms of IA and symptoms of sleep disturbance. This study uses network analysis to identify bridge symptoms by analyzing these interactions in a large sample of students. METHOD: We recruited 1977 university students to participate in our study. Each student completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used these collected data for network a

Sleep disturbances in Lewy body dementia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lewy body dementia (LBD) refers to both dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD). Sleep disturbances are common in LBD, and can include poor sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and rapid eye movement behaviour disorder (RBD). Despite the high clinical prevalence of sleep disturbances in LBD, they are under-studied relative to other dementias. The aim of the present systematic review was to examine the nature of sleep disturbances in LBD, summarise the effect of treatment studies upon sleep, and highlight specific and necessary direc

Sex differences in stress-induced sleep deficits.

Sleep disruptions are hallmarks in the pathophysiology of several stress-related disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), both known to disproportionately affect female populations. Although previous studies have attempted to investigate disordered sleep in women, few studies have explored and compared how repeated stress affects sleep in both sexes in either human or animal models. We have previously shown that male rats exhibit behavioral and neuroendocrine habituation to 5 days of repeated restraint, whereas females do not; additional d

Daytime sleepiness may be an independent symptom unrelated to sleep quality in Parkinson's disease.

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) may represent a disabling non-motor symptom in patients affected by Parkinson's disease (PD). This is a secondary analysis of a previous study documenting the improvement of nocturnal sleep in PD patients treated by rotigotine vs placebo. Here we tested the supposition that EDS may represent a distinct PD non-motor symptom occurring independently of other sleep-wake disorders; moreover, we verified whether EDS can be influenced by the improvement of nocturnal sleep in PD. In the present study, we evaluated the daytime sleepiness of PD patients treated with no

[Melatonin: from hormone to drug?].

Melatonin is an indole hormone that is produced by the pineal gland, mainly at night, with a peak around 3.00 a.m. under normal environmental conditions. This endogenic secretion cycle is generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei in response to the day/night alternation. Light either suppresses or entrains melatonin production according to the time of light exposure. Melatonin can be viewed as the "hand" of the internal clock and is regulated via the central nervous and sympathetic systems. Melatonin synchronizes biological cycles, particularly the temperature and sleep/wake cycles. Exogenous me

Epidemiology and clinical findings of restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor disorder characterized by discomfort of and urge to move the legs, primarily during rest or inactivity, partial or total relief with movement, with presence or worsening exclusively in the evening. It is a relatively common but frequently unrecognized disorder, with a prevalence ranging from 2.5 to 15% of the general population, increasing with age and with a female preponderance. The diagnosis is clinical but polysomnography is useful to determine its profound impact on sleep (difficulties in sleep onset, maintaining sleep during the night, and

[Assessment and treatment of respiratory dysfunction in severely handicapped children: respiratory disorders during sleep].

In severely handicapped patients, chronic respiratory insufficiencies and recurrent hypoxemia especially during sleep are one of the major problems to take care of them. To clarify the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders during sleep, we examined 5 severely handicapped patients with no respiratory distress during wakefulness, but with signs of latent respiratory insufficiency by means of polygraphical all-night study including the arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) monitoring. In the severely handicapped patients, sleep hypoxemia occurred frequently. The value of SaO2 decreased in proporti

The effect of intensive rehabilitation treatment on sleep disorder in children with motor delays.

BACKGROUND: Although the importance of sleep problems has been increasingly emphasized due to the effects on children's development and children's and families' daytime behaviors, physical health, and quality of life, they have been overlooked in clinical practice. However, there have been few studies on the effects of rehabilitation on sleep problems. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the effects of an intensive rehabilitation program on sleep problems in children with developmental delays (DD). METHODS: We included 36 children with DD (30 outpatients, 6 inpatients) and their caregiv
