Diagnostic assessment of communicative and interactive behaviours in children with autism and receptive language disorder.

Children with autism and children with a severe specific receptive language disorder both show clear deficits in communicative language skills and in social relationships. In this study the usefulness of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) in the differential diagnosis between these two groups of developmentally impaired children is assessed. 11 children with early infantile autism and 20 children with a specific receptive language disorder participated in the study. 18 children with an expressive language disorder were used as a control group. The ADOS was individually administe

Neurocognitive deficits in alcoholics and social drinkers: a continuum?

Our research program has investigated neurocognitive deficits in sober alcoholics for several decades. We have shown that both male and female adult alcoholics--compared with peer nonalcoholic controls--have deficits on tests of learning, memory, abstracting, problem-solving, perceptual analysis and synthesis, speed of information processing, and efficiency. The deficits are equivalent to those found in patients with known brain dysfunction of a mild to moderate nature. Attempts to identify factors other than alcoholism to account for these differences have been unsuccessful. The deficits appe

Using Reports of Symptoms and Diagnoses on Social Media to Predict COVID-19 Case Counts in Mainland China: Observational Infoveillance Study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has affected more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. This disease poses an extraordinary challenge for public health systems because screening and surveillance capacity is often severely limited, especially during the beginning of the outbreak; this can fuel the outbreak, as many patients can unknowingly infect other people. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to collect and analyze posts related to COVID-19 on Weibo, a popular Twitter-like social media site in China. To our knowledge, this infoveillance study employs the largest, most co

Is coronavirus pandemic-related anxiety higher in children with chronic kidney disease than healthy children?

BACKGROUND: Since the emergence and worldwide spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it has caused people to experience adverse psychological effects. This study aimed to assess anxiety levels during COVID-19 in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including nephrotic syndrome (NS) and kidney transplantation (Tx). METHODS: A case-controlled, cross-sectional study was conducted with children aged 10-18 years, who had a diagnosis of CKD or NS, or Tx, and followed in our center between April and July 2020. A healthy control group was recruited with age- and gender-matched chil

Proteome profile of telencephalon associates attenuated neurogenesis with chronic stress induced mood disorder phenotypes in zebrafish model.

Debilitating mental illness like depression and related mood disorders is due to the disruption in circuitry that controls emotion, motivation, and reward, characterized by disparate phenotypes like decrease in socialization, motivation, threshold for threat apprehension, etc. Chronic stress is a major factor in the etiology of these disorders. Here, using a chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) paradigm the characterization of an array of mood disorder phenotypes in adult zebrafish, in comparison to normal control unstressed fish, was achieved using a battery of behavioral assays including novel

Long-term impact of joint bleeds in von Willebrand disease: a nested case-control study.

Patients with severe von Willebrand disease (VWD) may develop arthropathy after joint bleeds. Information on its prevalence and severity is limited. We aimed to assess the occurrence and severity of arthropathy in VWD and its impact on daily life. VWD patients with and without verified joint bleeds were matched for age, sex and Factor VIII level or von Willebrand Factor activity in a nested case-control study within the Willebrand in the Netherlands study. Assessments included the Hemophilia Joint Health Score (0-124), Pettersson score (0-13 per joint X-ray), Hemophilia Activity List score (0-

A randomised controlled trial of an exercise plus behaviour change intervention in people with multiple sclerosis: the step it up study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Exercise has consistently yielded short-term, positive effects on health outcomes in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). However, these effects have not been maintained in the long-term. Behaviour change interventions aim to promote long-term positive lifestyle change. This study, namely, "Step it Up" will compare the effect of an exercise plus Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)-based behaviour change intervention with an exercise plus control education intervention on walking mobility among people with MS. METHODS/DESIGN: People with a diagnosis of MS who walk independently, score of

The von Economo neurons in the frontoinsular and anterior cingulate cortex.

The von Economo neurons (VENs) are large bipolar neurons located in the frontoinsular cortex (FI) and limbic anterior (LA) area in great apes and humans but not in other primates. Our stereological counts of VENs in FI and LA show them to be more numerous in humans than in apes. In humans, small numbers of VENs appear the 36th week postconception, with numbers increasing during the first 8 months after birth. There are significantly more VENs in the right hemisphere in postnatal brains; this may be related to asymmetries in the autonomic nervous system. VENs are also present in elephants and w

Drug problems in contemporary China: a profile of Chinese drug users in a metropolitan area.

BACKGROUND: Drug problems are reemerging in China since the nation implemented economic reform and an "open door" policy in the early 1980s. This is causing both national and international concern. However, knowledge and understanding of the Chinese drug problem is fairly limited because of the nation's unique social and political history. In response to this shortage of information, our study presents a profile of Chinese drug users. METHODS: Data were collected from a survey of drug users attending mandatory treatment centres in a large city in 2009. We present a demographic profile of the

Diagnostic methods and epidemiologic surveillance of Taenia solium infection.

Taeniasis and cysticercosis caused by Taenia solium, the pork tapeworm, are widespread infections of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The disease in humans (neurocysticercosis), caused by the cystic larval stages which develop in the central nervous system, is often disabling and sometimes fatal. T. solium infections are endemic in rural and urban areas in some countries that have limited resources to introduce and sustain control programs. To give T. solium control high national priority, the effect of the diseases on health and social care budgets must be accurately measured. Surveys are nee

Influence of Social Media on Sexualized Drug Use and Chemsex Among Chinese Men Who Have Sex With Men: Observational Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexualized drug use (SDU; the use of any psychoactive substance before or during sexual intercourse) is prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM) and may aggravate the worsening HIV epidemic in this key population. OBJECTIVE: This observational prospective cohort study investigated factors predicting the occurrence of SDU within a 6-month follow-up period among a sample of MSM in Hong Kong. We hypothesized that perceptions related to SDU would mediate the association between the influence of social media/gay social networking apps and SDU during the follow-up period. METHOD

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, ensuring the autonomy and wellbeing of older adults living at home has become increasingly important. Supporting independence is central to aging in place, which requires access to appropriate health and social resources. In this context, community-based public health interventions may play an important role in addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges associated with aging. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials examining community-based public health interventions that prom

Impact VR: A Socioemotional Intervention for Reducing CU Traits, Conduct Problems, and Aggression in Youth with Conduct Disorder.

Conduct Disorder (CD) and callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with persistent antisocial behavior, emotional processing deficits, and poor treatment response. CU traits designate a subgroup of youth with CD who are at greater risk of violence and long-term mental health challenges. It is well-established that CU traits, CD, and aggression are tied to deficits in emotion recognition, social information processing, and interpersonal functioning, yet few interventions directly target these mechanisms. This randomized controlled trial tested the effects of Impact VR, a brief virtual rea
