Impact of Social Integration and Living Arrangements on Korean Older Adults' Depression: A Moderation Model.

Depression among older adults is a challenging public health concern in Korea. Using panel data from the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs on Korean older adults and their family caregivers, this study explores significant predictors of depression among Korean older adults as well as the moderating effect of living arrangements on the association between social integration and depression. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that preexisting depression was the most significant predictor of Korean older adults' current depression, followed by health status and family s

Romantic relationships and substance use in early adulthood: an examination of the influences of relationship type, partner substance use, and relationship quality.

This study used longitudinal data from 909 young adults to examine associations between substance use and the status and quality of romantic relationships. Heavy alcohol use, marijuana use, and cigarette smoking, as well as relationship status, relationship quality, partner substance use, and other salient life circumstances were assessed at four time points in the two years after high school. Marriage, cohabiting relationships, and noncohabiting dating relationships were associated with reductions in heavy drinking and marijuana use relative to non-dating, after adjusting for adolescent subst

[Malnutrition in the aged--effect of physical, mental, psychological and social factors].

The elderly are considered a risk group for malnutrition, due not only to poor nutrition, but also to other aspects of daily life which affect food intake and nutritional status. In this study 11 factors of physical, mental, psychical, and social origin have been defined as risk-factors leading to malnutrition. Their appearance in a group of 100 geriatric patients above the age of 75 years has been examined. Immobility and difficulties with chewing were found in nearly 50% of the patients. Social problems were observed in 22%-31%. In contrast, there was usually a daily hot meal available to th

Associations Between Social Deprivation and Mental Health Symptoms in Sexual and Gender Minority Adults.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations include individuals who identify as non-heterosexual and/or whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. SGM populations experience higher rates of social deprivation-disadvantages in socioeconomic factors and living conditions-compared to non-SGM groups. While current research highlights the negative health impacts of social deprivation, no work has assessed whether SGM identity moderates associations between social deprivation and mental health symptoms. Further, it is unknown whether specific measures of social deprivati

The Relationships Between Social Support Seeking, Social Media Use, and Psychological Resilience Among College Students.

INTRODUCTION: Social networking sites (SNSs) have evolved into a commonly used instrument for searching and obtaining social support. While previous research has explored and validated the correlation between seeking social support and the recipient's physical or psychological well-being, few studies have illuminated the mechanisms through which this relationship manifests in SNSs usage. This study investigated how the tendency of college students to seek social support corresponds to their psychological resilience via different SNSs activities and interactions on Douyin (ie, TikTok's counterp

Social Model Recovery and Recovery Housing.

Recovery housing is an important resource for many in their recovery from alcohol and other drug use disorders. Yet providers of recovery housing face a number of challenges. Many of these challenges are rooted in stigma and bias about recovery housing. The ability to describe the service and purported mechanisms of action vis-a-vis an overarching framework, approach, or orientation could also go a long way in adding credence to recovery housing as a service delivery mechanism. Several aspects of social model recovery are often explicitly built or organically reflected in how recovery housing

Friends With Health Benefits: The Long-Term Benefits of Early Peer Social Integration for Blood Pressure and Obesity in Midlife.

In adults, greater social integration is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. Social integration earlier in life may be similarly associated with cardiovascular risk. Using a longitudinal sample of 267 Black and White men, we examined whether greater social integration with peers during childhood and adolescence, assessed by parent report, prospectively predicts lower blood pressure and body mass index two decades later in adulthood and whether these effects differ by race, given well-documented racial disparities in hypertension. Boys who were report

Social environment and regimen adherence among type II diabetic patients.

We investigated the reliability and predictive validity of several measures of the social environment using a sample of 127 adults with type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. Of particular interest was a revised scale of family support for performing diabetes self-care behaviors. Across four different aspects of the diabetes regimen, it was consistently found that regimen-specific measures of family support differentiated subjects who were low, medium, or high on adherence better than global family-support scores. Social-environment measures were generally successful in predicting a subject

Social Functioning in Children With or At Risk for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Considerable work has demonstrated significant impairment in social functioning for children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The social functioning profiles of children with ADHD are marked by impairments across diverse domains as they tend to experience greater rates of peer rejection, have lower levels of social skills, and have impaired social cognitions. The purpose of this study was to (a) quantitatively examine the association between ADHD and deficits across several domains of social functioning (peer functioning, social skills, social information processing), (b)

Association of Eating Alone With Depression Among Older Adults Living Alone: Role of Poor Social Networks.

OBJECTIVES: Eating alone is associated with an increased risk of depression symptoms. This association may be confounded by poor social networks. The present study aimed to determine the role of poor social networks in the association of eating alone with depression symptoms, focusing on cohabitation status. METHODS: Seven hundred and ten community-dwelling older adults were categorized according to their eating style and social network size, evaluated using an abbreviated version of the Lubben Social Network Scale, with poor social network size (defined as the lowest quartile). Living alone and cardiovascular health status in residents of a rural village of coastal Ecuador (The Atahualpa Project).

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge of region-specific factors affecting the cardiovascular health (CVH) is mandatory to reduce the growing burden of stroke and ischemic heart disease in rural areas of Latin American. We conducted a population-based case-control study to assess the CVH status of Atahualpa residents-a rural village representative of Coastal Ecuador-according to their living arrangements. METHODS: All Atahualpa residents aged ≥40 years and free of stroke or ischemic heart disease that lived alone were identified during a door-to-door census, and their CVH status was compared to that of a sam

The importance of social vulnerability and exclusion in cancer prognosis and survival: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cancer prognosis and survival are determined not only by biological and clinical factors, but also by patients' social environments. Social vulnerability, including socioeconomic deprivation, limited education, weak social networks, and social exclusion, can critically influence diagnosis, treatment adherence, and outcomes. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current evidence on the impact of social vulnerability and exclusion on cancer outcomes, comprising prognosis, survival, quality of life, and related psychosocial factors. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Ite

Analysing risk factors for involuntary admission from an intersectional perspective: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Involuntary admission (IA) is a contentious practice in mental healthcare, justified only to prevent harm to self or others. Previous studies have identified individual sociodemographic characteristics as risk factors for IA. Intersectional theories argue that such approaches overlook the complexities of social identities and related health inequalities. Intersectionality stresses the interconnected nature of social identities, such as race or class, and analyses how these overlapping factors create unique experiences of marginalisation and discrimination. This study aimed to adopt
