A key goal of cognitive neuroscience is to better understand how dynamic brain activity relates to behavior. Such dynamics, in terms of spatial and temporal patterns of brain activity, are directly measured with neurophysiological methods such as EEG, but can also be indirectly expressed by the body. Autonomic nervous system activity is the best-known example, but, muscles in the eyes and face can also index brain activity. Mostly parallel lines of artificial intelligence research show that EEG and facial muscles both encode information about emotion, pain, attention, and social interactions,

Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate children's processing of dysphonic speech in a realistic classroom setting, under the influence of added classroom noise. Method Typically developing 6-year-old primary school children performed two listening tasks in their regular classrooms: a phoneme discrimination task to assess speech perception and a sentence-picture matching task to assess listening comprehension. Speech stimuli were played back in either a typical or an impaired voice quality. Children performed the tasks in the presence of induced classroom noise at signal-to-noise rati

The lip function of 16 speakers with upper motor neuron damage following cerebrovascular accident (CVA), was investigated using instrumental measures. Sixteen, non-neurologically impaired adults matched for age and sex served as controls. The results of the instrumental investigations revealed that the CVA speakers had patterns of lip function that were significantly different from the control speakers. Specifically, on maximum force tasks, the CVA speakers were found to produce significantly lower maximum lip force values. Maximum rate of attempts at lip movement was also slower in the CVA sp

Manual classification of production errors and the allocation of speech/spelling scores are time-consuming, laborious and error-prone tasks, even when conducted by clinicians and specialized researchers. Here we present sunflower, an R package developed to improve the analysis of language production quality for Spanish data. The package offers various functions, including (1) managing dataframes containing single responses and multiple-attempt responses, (2) conducting formal similarity analyses on words as well as positional accuracy data analyses within words, and (3) the classification of e

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) describes a group of language-led dementias. Speech and language therapy is the main available intervention for people with PPA. Despite best practice recommendations for speech and language therapy to include access to group therapies (Volkmer et al, 2023a), research evidence to date has predominantly focused on delivery in individual sessions. The aim of this study was to gather the collective intelligence of expert speech and language therapists/pathologists delivering group therapy for people with PPA to synthesize guidance for clinicians. This paper descr

Children who are performing at a prelinguistic level of vocal communication present unique issues related to successful intervention relative to the general population of children with speech disorders. These children do not consistently use meaning-based vocalizations to communicate with those around them. General goals for this group of children include stimulating more mature vocalization types and connecting these vocalizations to meanings that can be used to communicate consistently with persons in their environment. We propose a means, motive, and opportunity conceptual framework for ass

BACKGROUND: Listening to audible sound for medical diagnosis and monitoring spans health care professionals, physiologists, psychologists, and computer engineers. Artificial intelligence has advanced acoustic analysis in both voice/speech science and respiratory medicine, but asymmetrically. This asymmetry has deep roots: McKusick's adoption of sound spectrography and Forgacs' oscilloscope-based waveform inspection applied methods established in voice/speech acoustics. The same one-way pattern persists: sound-classification methods migrate from voice/speech research into lung sound analysis wi

Depression is a global prevalent ailment for possible mental illness or mental disorder globally. Recognizing depressed early signs is critical for evaluating and preventing mental illness. With the progress of machine learning, it is possible to make intelligent systems capable of detecting depressive symptoms using speech analysis. This study presents a hybrid model to identify and predict mental illness from Arabic speech analysis due to depression. The proposed hybrid model comprises convolutional neural network (CNN) and a support vector machine (SVM) to identify and predict mental disord

Purpose The purpose of this clinical focus article is to provide a descriptive case study of a late-adopted, bilingual adolescent with cleft palate speech errors. Specifically, we examined the cross-linguistic generalization of remediated compensatory cleft errors, following treatment in English (second language) only. The overarching goal of this study is to gain insights into the complexity of speech intervention for the adopted population with delayed cleft palate repair. Method A 14-year-old female adopted from China with a repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate and maladaptive articulat

This article focuses on methodological issues related to quantitative assessments of speech quality after glossectomy. Acoustic and articulatory data were collected for 8 consonants from two patients. The acoustic analysis is based on spectral moments and the Klatt VOT. Lingual movements are recorded with ultrasound without calibration. The variations of acoustic and articulatory parameters across pre- and post-surgery conditions are analyzed in the light of perceptual evaluations of the stimuli. A parameter is considered to be relevant if its variation is congruent with perceptual ratings. Th

Normal hearing and hearing impaired subjects listened alternately to continuous discourse processed by pairs of binaural hearing aids. In each case, they were asked to judge which pair of aids reproduced speech more intelligibly. Twenty-three pairs of aids competed in three elimination tournaments and one round-robin tournament. Speech discrimination tests obtained via each aid served as the criterion measure of the success of the judgments. The results were that the paired comparison procedure produced more reliable rankings than discrimination scores particularly when the difference between

BACKGROUND: Communication is frequently impaired in young people (YP) with bilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Important factors include motoric speech problems (dysarthria) and intellectual disability. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) techniques are often employed. The aim was to describe the speech problems in bilateral CP, factors associated with speech problems, current AAC provision and use, and to explore the views of both the parent/carer and young person about communication.
METHODS: A total population of children with bilateral CP (n = 346) from four consecutive years of b

Individuals with unreliable, minimal, or non-speaking autism face significant challenges in expressing themselves. Historically, these communication difficulties have been attributed to cognitive deficits, however, emerging research suggests that apraxia, may be a primary barrier to effective communication. This study aims to explore the role of apraxia affecting speech, and how society views and supports communication. This auto-ethnographic study is informed by the lived experiences of three minimally speaking autistic individuals, highlighting the disconnect between cognitive capacity and e

OBJECTIVE: Subclinical phenotypes of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL ± P) may be identified from clinically "unaffected" relatives and could be associated with specific cleft-related gene mutations. It has been hypothesized that velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) may be a subclinical phenotype of interest in this population, but this has not been explored quantitatively with appropriate control cohorts. The aim of this case-control study was to compare VPI in at-risk clinically unaffected relatives of individuals with nonsyndromic CL ± P with a low-risk matched normativ

Gio is a bilingual 6-year 10-month-old boy new to your practice who presents for an unscheduled visit with concerns for speech and language delay. He was born in Portugal, and his native language is Portuguese. When he was 21 months old, his family moved to Italy and then moved to the United States 3 years later. He had very little contact with other children while living in Italy, but his parents report that he has made friends quickly in the United States. His family speaks Portuguese at home, although his father is fluent in English. He started school 3 months after moving to the United Sta

This study investigates French dyslexic and control adult participants' ability to perceive and produce two different non-native contrasts (one segmental and one prosodic), across several conditions varying short-term memory load. For this purpose, we selected Korean plosive voicing (whose categories conflict with French ones) as the segmental contrast and lexical stress as the prosodic contrast (French does not use contrastive lexical stress). We also used a French (native) segmental contrast as a control. Tasks were either auditory discrimination or repetition of CVCV nonsense words. Short-t
