How Do Intermediate Grade Students With and Without Language-Based Learning Disabilities Use Noun Phrases in Narrative Writing?

PURPOSE: Noun phrase usage and elaboration is an important feature of literate language. In this study, we described noun phrase usage and elaboration in the narrative writing samples of intermediate grade students with and without language-based learning disabilities. METHOD: Narrative writing samples from 64 students in fourth through sixth grades were coded for five types of noun phrases using coding procedures adapted from prior research. Noun phrase ratios (NPR) were calculated for each type of noun phrase evaluated in the study. NPRs represented the proportion of noun phrases to total c

Educational Information Improves Listener Attitudes Toward People With Dysarthria Secondary to Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: People with dysarthria have been rated as less confident and less likable and are often assumed by listeners to have reduced cognitive abilities relative to neurotypical speakers. This study explores whether educational information about dysarthria can shift these attitudes in a group of speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria secondary to Parkinson's disease. METHOD: One hundred seventeen listeners were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk to transcribe sentences and rate the confidence, intelligence, and likability of eight speakers with mild hypokinetic dysarthria. Listeners were ass

Comparing Interventions With Speech-Generating Devices and Other Augmentative and Alternative Communication Modes: A Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: Optimal augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for children with complex communication needs depend in part on child characteristics, child preferences, and features of the systems themselves. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to describe and synthesize single case design studies comparing young children's acquisition of communication skills with speech-generating devices (SGDs) and other AAC modes. METHOD: A systematic search of published and gray literature was conducted. Data related to study details, rigor, participant characteristics, design information, an

Ameliorating poverty-related communication and swallowing disabilities: Sustainable Development Goal 1.

PURPOSE: More than 700 million people globally are still living in extreme poverty. No poverty (Sustainable Development Goal 1, SDG 1), is considered to be the greatest global challenge. This paper aims to outline the effects of poverty on communication and swallowing disabilities across the lifespan and steps to take for its amelioration. RESULT: Poverty and disability are in a vicious cycle with each being a cause for and a consequence of the other. Poverty has incontrovertible and significant ramifications for communication and swallowing disabilities across the lifetime from pregnancy to

Barriers to Informational Support for Care Partners of People With Aphasia After Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Care partners of people with aphasia after stroke need various informational supports, such as aphasia education and resources for psychosocial support. However, informational support may vary across clinicians, and access to these supports remains a persistent unmet need. Using implementation science frameworks can help to assess the gap between what is known about an issue and what is occurring in practice. AIM: The aim was to identify barriers to providing informational support for care partners of people with aphasia after stroke. METHOD AND PROCEDURE: We performed a secondar

The Effect of Prosodic Timing Structure on Unison Production in People With Aphasia.

PURPOSE: Unison production is a common aphasia treatment technique in which the clinician and the person with aphasia (PWA) produce phrases aloud together. It can be implemented using a typical "conversational," syntax-influenced prosodic timing structure, or with a "metrical," beat-based timing structure, but to date no study has directly compared these two approaches. This study compared the effects of metrical versus conversational prosodic timing during unison production on the (a) accuracy of participants' spoken output and (b) timing alignment of participants' productions with the stimul

The Effect of Genetic Taste Status on Swallowing: A Literature Review.

PURPOSE: Swallowing and taste share innervation pathways and are crucial to nutritive intake. Individuals vary in their perception of taste due to factors such as genetics; however, it is unclear to what extent genetic taste status influences swallowing physiology and function. The purpose of this review article is to provide background on genetic taste status, review the evidence on the association between genetic taste status and swallowing, and discuss research and clinical implications. METHOD: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using search terms related to swallowing and ge

Stratifying Risk of Nonadherence in Lingual Strengthening Dysphagia Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Exercise-based treatments may improve swallowing safety and efficiency; yet, it is not clearly understood which factors predict nonadherence to recommended treatment protocols. The aim of this study was to construct an algorithm for stratifying risk of nonadherence to a lingual strengthening dysphagia treatment program. METHOD: Using recursive partitioning, we created a classification tree built from a pool of sociodemographic, clinical, and functional status indicators to identify risk groups for nonadherence to an intensive lingual strengthening treatment program. Nonadherence, or

Exploring Alternative Methods to Reduce Milk Flow Rate From Infant Bottle Systems: Bottle Angle, Milk Volume, and Bottle Ventilation.

PURPOSE: Modifying milk flow rate is a common pediatric dysphagia treatment. Though past investigations have demonstrated how this can be achieved using bottle nipples, little is known about the impact of other bottle modifications. The objective of this investigation is to demonstrate how bottle vent, bottle position, and volume of milk alter bottle pressures and milk flow. METHOD: A Dr. Brown's bottle filled with formula was secured to a retort stand and inverted to allow milk to free flow from a Level 1 nipple. Milk flow rate and bottle pressures were calculated under three conditions: (a)

Accumulated Secretions and Associated Aerodigestive Function in Patients With Dysphagia.

PURPOSE: Accumulated pharyngo-laryngeal secretions are associated with dysphagia, aspiration, and poor health outcomes. Despite ongoing developments in the evaluation of pharyngo-laryngeal secretions, understanding of the underlying mechanisms is limited. Pathophysiology associated with accumulated secretions is needed to guide tailored, targeted treatment pathways. This study reports the prevalence of accumulated pharyngo-laryngeal secretions in a large acute care caseload and explores the relationship between secretions and aerodigestive function. METHOD: Consecutive inpatients (N = 222) re

Implementation of Esophageal Screening in an Outpatient Hospital-Based Setting: A Quality Improvement Project.

PURPOSE: Despite evidence supporting interconnectivity of oropharyngeal and esophageal swallowing, evaluation and treatment are dichotomized. When the videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) only considers oropharyngeal swallowing, the full scope of swallowing impairment may be missed. A lower rate of esophageal screening in an outpatient hospital setting may result from lack of speech-language pathologist (SLP) training and understanding of screening feasibility. This project was an internal quality improvement project (QIP) at Mayo Clinic in Arizona to (a) educate and train SLPs on conduct

Self-Perception of Cognitive-Communication Functions After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: A mixed-method approach was used to investigate the lived experiences of adults with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The study aimed to understand the perceived relationship between cognitive-communication problems, thinking and communication concerns, and neurobehavioral symptoms. We hypothesized that individuals with cognitive-communication problems would attribute their problems with communication to their mTBI history and their self-perceived problems would be correlated with symptomatology. METHOD: The Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) and an online cognitive-communica
