Dual intestinal parasitosis unmasked by treatment for gastrointestinal sarcoidosis.

The symptoms and complications of intestinal parasitosis can occur with long-term corticosteroid therapy. We highlight the case of a young man who developed chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms of diarrhea, crampy abdominal pain, and vomiting while on treatment for multisystemic sarcoidosis with corticosteroids. His symptoms were initially thought to be related to the gastrointestinal manifestations of sarcoidosis, but further evaluation revealed a combined case of intestinal strongyloidiasis and giardiasis as well as previously undiagnosed human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV -1) infection…

Subcutaneous ivermectin for the treatment of the hyperinfection syndrome by Strongyloides stercoralis.

Strongyloidiasis is a disease caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis that is endemic in rural regions in tropical and subtropical countries. Immunosuppressed patients have an increased risk of infection by this parasite and are at risk of developing a hyperinfection syndrome which involves a higher risk of death. The syndrome is treated with ivermectin, however, there is no parenteral presentation of this medication for human use in Colombia or the world, which is an important problem in patients who have compromised enteral absorption, for instance, those with intestinal obstruction…

Pulmonary infections in immigrants and refugees.

Immigrants and refugees are susceptible to a wide array of pulmonary diseases, including familiar infections that are acquired after entry a … eripheral blood eosinophilia suggests helminthic infection. TB, melioidosis, fungal infections, and strongyloidiasis may remain inapparent for years and then produce devastating illness in the setting of immunosuppressive therapy or the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Proper health care of immigrants requires an understanding of unusual exposures and infection …

A scoping review of transmission models for soil-transmitted helminth infections to underpin the development of a transmission model for Strongyloides stercoralis.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections afflict people worldwide, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Strongyloides stercoralis is distinctive from other STH nematodes by its complex life cycle features of autoinfection, parthenogenesis, and environmental reproduction. This scoping review aims to identify the structures, features, and techniques employed in existing STH models, emphasizing their potential application in describing S. stercoralis infection dynamics. A comprehensive search was conducted in the Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases for studies published until 14 Ju

[Strongyloidosis. I. Specific and nonspecific skin lesions].

Specific, recurrent, tortuous or linear serpiginicus urticarial rash and nonspecific, stationary urticarial skin lesions appearing during infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and concomitant clinical manifestations in human were presented. Pathognomic form of larva currens in primary infection with S. stercoralis and in already allergic host during exo-autoinfection of the parasite, and similar skin lesions appearing during the endo-autoinfection but without the presence of S. stercoralis larvae in skin were described. Nonspecific urticarias were set against the pathognostic lesions.

A case of Strongyloides stercoralis in central Louisiana.

A typical case of Strongyloides stercoralis in a nonimmunocompromised host is described in which the diagnosis was made only by examination of purged stools. Strongyloides stercoralis probably occurs in 3% to 5% of patients in the rural south. It also occurs in selected populations of southeast Asian immigrants and American veterans of war in the Far East. Because of its capacity for reinfection, unusually long infestations can occur. Hyperinfections, with 50% mortality, may occur in iatrogenically or naturally immunocompromised patients. Consequently, a high index of suspicion, coupled with a
