Aim: This manuscript describes implementation of clinical decision support for providers concerned with perioperative complications of malignant hyperthermia susceptibility. Materials & methods: Clinical decision support for malignant hyperthermia susceptibility was implemented in 2018 based around our pre-emptive genotyping platform. Epidemiologic studies suggest that women who smoke have lower endogenous estrogen than nonsmokers. To explore the possible link between cigarette smoking and decreased endogenous estrogens, we have examined the effects of constituents of tobacco on estrogen production in human choriocarcinoma cells and term placental microsomes. In choriocarcinoma cell cultures, nicotine, cotinine (a major metabolite of nicotine), and anabasine (a minor component of cigarette tobacco) all inhibited androstenedione conversion to estrogen in a dose-dependent fashion. 23,444 anaesthetic files were collected over a 12-month period from all the anaesthetic departments of the Regional Hospital in Nancy and three private clinics in town. The data were set out on a computer data-sheet aimed at defining the risk factors for histamine release. As a result, two groups are defined: a group of patients who released histamine (HL+; n = 212) and a group of patients who did not release histamine (HL-; n = 23,232). BACKGROUND: 4-Chloro-m-cresol (4-CmC) induces marked contractures in skeletal muscle specimens from individuals susceptible to malignant hyperthermia (MHS). In contrast, 4-CmC induces only small contractures in specimens from normal (MHN) patients. 4-CmC is a preservative within a large number of commercially available drug-preparations (e.g., insulin, heparin, succinylcholine), and it has been suggested that 4-CmC might trigger malignant hyperthermia.
