Predicting Asthma Exacerbations Using Machine Learning Models.

INTRODUCTION: Although clinical, functional, and biomarker data predict asthma exacerbations, newer approaches providing high accuracy of prognosis are needed for real-world decision-making in asthma. Machine learning (ML) leverages mathematical and statistical methods to detect patterns for future disease events across large datasets from electronic health records (EHR). This study conducted training and fine-tuning of ML algorithms for the real-world prediction of asthma exacerbations in patients with physician-diagnosed asthma. METHODS: Adults with ≥ 2 ICD9/10 asthma codes within 1 year an

Early prediction of 3-month functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke: an explainable model based on routine clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Accurate early prediction of 3-month functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke is essential for prognostic communication, early management planning, and resource allocation. However, clinically applicable and interpretable prediction tools based on routinely collected data remain limited. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective prediction-model study, we analyzed 770 adults with acute ischemic stroke admitted within 24 h of symptom onset. Baseline clinical and early laboratory variables were collected. After an 80/20 train-test split, key predictors were selected using c

Computational gait analysis in the 3xTg-AD mouse model: evidence of progressive alterations in locomotor coordination.

INTRODUCTION: Gait alterations have been proposed as functional indicators of neural dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease; however, their ability to capture disease-associated locomotor changes in preclinical models remains insufficiently characterized. METHODS: In this study, we applied a neuroinformatics framework combining markerless pose estimation, kinematic feature extraction, conventional statistical analysis, supervised machine learning, and model interpretability to characterize gait alterations in the 3xTg-AD mouse model. Two complementary analyses were performed: cross-sectional geno…

Longitudinal Trends in Noncommunicable Disease Risk Factors and Premature Mortality in Saudi Arabia: A 33-Year Ecological Time-Series Study with Machine Learning Prediction.

Background/Objectives: In Saudi Arabia, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are an increasing public health concern, with almost 70% of deaths related to chronic diseases. The study aimed to analyze 33-year trends in NCD risk factors and apply machine learning (ML) models to identify ecological associates of premature NCD-related mortality, sex-specific analyses and project trajectories to 2030. Methods: A longitudinal ecological time-series design which used WHO Global Health Observatory (GHO) NCD Indicators (1990-2022; select lipid indicators from 1980). Five supervised regression ML models-OLS,

Patient complexity profiles in depression: a machine learning approach to personalized mental health.

BACKGROUND: Patient complexity in mental health varies substantially, yet treatment approaches often rely on standardized protocols. Identifying distinct complexity profiles may support stratified care and more personalized intervention planning in depression. OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct patient complexity profiles in depression across sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial indicators and to evaluate their clinical relevance for personalized treatment planning. METHODS: We analyzed complete-case data from 270 adults with major depression using a Knowledge Discovery in Databases fra

Cotton boll extraction and single-boll weight estimation based on UAV multispectral imagery.

Single-boll weight (SBW) is difficult to estimate after defoliant application because canopy spectra include numerous mixed pixels from lint, soil, and senescent leaves, leading to strong background interference. Here we propose a UAV multispectral workflow that combines object-based boll extraction, spectral feature selection, and machine-learning regression to improve SBW mapping. Data were collected from a two-year drip-irrigated cotton experiment in Xinjiang, China involving four varieties evaluated under five planting densities treatments. Boll extraction was treated as a supervised objec

Urine, saliva, and serum metabolomics predict female pig reproductive potential status using machine learning modelling.

Profitability in the pork industry relies heavily on breeding herd productivity. However, traditional phenotypic and genetic methods are limited in their selection efficiency for some reproductive potential related traits. This leads to high culling rates due to poor reproductive performance and detriments to productivity and profits. This study investigated whether metabolomic profiling of urine, saliva, and serum applied to machine learning (ML) algorithms could predict female pig reproductive potential status. Urine, saliva, and serum samples from high reproductive potential (HRP; lifetime

Construction and evaluation of a CatBoost-based machine learning model for sarcopenia prediction using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and handgrip strength (HGS) from a nationally representative dataset of Korean older adults.

This study aimed to develop and validate an explainable machine learning model for predicting sarcopenia in older adults using nationally representative data. Using the 2022-2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES; n = 2,721, ≥ 65 y), we constructed a data-driven framework integrating demographic, anthropometric, biochemical, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) variables. Sarcopenia was defined by the 2019 Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria, requiring both low appendicular skeletal muscle mass and reduced handgrip strength. Five supervised al

The needle study: Machine learning as a new method for case-finding in celiac disease.

OBJECTIVES: Despite a well-defined diagnostic work-up, uncertainties persist regarding celiac disease (CeD) detection strategies in the general population. Machine learning (ML) algorithms offer promise in aiding medical decision-making on clinical data. This study aimed to utilize ML prediction models to identify uncommon features indicating the necessity for CeD screening in children. METHODS: The discovery cohort comprised children with CeD exhibiting nonspecific clinical features, drawn from a single referral center, along with gender- and age-matched controls. Machine learning guided virtual screening of FDA approved drugs targeting GSK-3β in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains one of the most challenging neurodegenerative disorders, with limited therapeutic options and high failure rates in clinical trials. This work developed a drug repurposing pipeline powered by a machine learning (ML) model to find possible glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β) inhibitors, a crucial target in AD pathogenesis. We selected, pre-processed, and optimized a dataset of 4,087 experimentally verified GSK-3β inhibitors using dimensionality reduction and descriptor creation. The most excellent prediction performance was obtained by Random Forest (100 de
