Central action of 6-aminodopamine.

6-Aminodopamine (6-ADA) is a dopamine analog causing degeneration of peripheral adrenergic fibers. Given to the lateral cerebral ventricle in mice 6-ADA did not change the locomotor activity of animals. In doses 10-200 micrograms ivc 6-ADA depressed the noradrenaline level only in the cerebral cortex, while the level of dopamine was depressed also in the subcortical nuclei.

Regional cerebral blood flow during hypotension in normotensive and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats: effect of sympathetic denervation.

This study was performed to determine whether, in hypertensive and normotensive rats, chronic sympathetic denervation impairs cerebral vasodilator responses during hypotension, and to determine whether there are regional differences in the autoregulatory response of brain vessels during hypotension. The superior cervical ganglion was removed on one side in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and normotensive (WKY) rats. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured with microspheres when the rats were 5-6 months old. Chronic sympathetic denervation had little or no effect on cerebral

The distribution of biogenic amines in the carotid bifurcation region.

1. The distribution of phenolic amines in the carotid body and of adrenergic nerves in the arterial walls of the carotid bifurcation region was investigated histochemically using the phenolic amine-formaldehyde gas condensation reaction, with supplementary electron microscopical examination. Studies were conducted on normal rabbits and on rabbits after superior cervical ganglionectomy.2. The glomus cells of the carotid body contain phenolic amines. The cellular amine persists after long-term sympathetic ganglionectomy.3. The blood vessels supplying the carotid body receive an adrenergic innerv

Catheter Ablation for Channelopathies: When Is Less More?

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a common cause of sudden cardiac death in patients with channelopathies, particularly in the young population. Although pharmacological treatment, cardiac sympathectomy, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) have been the mainstay in the management of VF in patients with channelopathies, they are associated with significant adverse effects and complications, leading to poor quality of life. Given these drawbacks, catheter ablation has been proposed as a therapeutic option for patients with channelopathies. Advances in imaging techniques and modern m…

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome after Spine Surgery: A Rare Complication in Mini-Invasive Lumbar Spine Surgery: An Updated Comprehensive Review.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a postoperative, misdiagnosed condition highlighted only by pain therapists after numer … ed uncomplicated lumbar spine surgery involving one segment. The most proposed therapy was chemical sympathectomy and spinal cord stimulation. CONCLUSION: CRPS is a rare pathology and is rarer after spine surgery. However, it is quite an invalidating disorder. Early therapy and resolution, however, require a rapid diagnosis of the syndrome. In our opinion, sin …

Spinal cord stimulator for the treatment of ischemic pain-Burger's disease and Raynaud's disease: A report of two cases and literature review.

Ischemic pain is the main symptom of a group of diseases that result in inadequate blood flow to the extremities and ischemia. In this sympt … t pain, insufficient response to endovascular treatment, and inoperabl cases, interventions such as sympathectomy and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) can be applicable. SCS reduces vascular resistance through vasodilator mediators and increases blood flow. SCS also suppresses sympathetic vasoconstriction, increases tissue vascularity, reduces tissue damage, provi …

Sweaty feet in adolescents-Early use of botulinum type A toxin in juvenile plantar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Plantar hyperhidrosis can have severe social effects on children and adolescents. Therapeutic options include antiperspirants and surgical interventions (eg, sympathectomy). Botulinum type A toxin is approved for axillary hyperhidrosis in adults only. The aim of the study was the determination of effect and safety of botulinum type A toxin in plantar hyperhidrosis in juvenile patients. METHODS: Children and adolescents with idiopathic focal plantar hyperhidrosis were treated with 50-100 U of botulinum type A toxin per sole. Local anesthesia was provided using topical eu…

Ultrasound-guided Sympathetic Block of the Radial Artery with Botulinum Toxin to Treat Vasospasm.

Vasospastic disorders in the hand have been treated with surgical sympathectomy and recently with botulinum toxin A (BTX) injections in the palm. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if it is possible to obtain precise administration of BTX around the radial artery using a single ultrasound-guided injection. We present a novel technique using 1 single ultrasound-guided BTX injection around the radial artery to treat vasospastic symptoms. Ten patients were included in a pilot study. All patients were referred by a rheumatologist after been diagnosed with primary or secondary Raynaud. Under…

Interleukin-17A is involved in mechanical hyperalgesia but not in the severity of murine antigen-induced arthritis.

Interleukin-17A (IL-17A) is considered an important pro-inflammatory cytokine but its importance in joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is unclear. It has also been reported that IL-17A may induce pain but it is unclear whether pro-inflammatory and pro-nociceptive effects are linked. Here we studied in wild type (WT) and IL-17A knockout (IL-17AKO) mice inflammation and hyperalgesia in antigen-induced arthritis (AIA). We found that the severity and time course of AIA were indistinguishable in WT and IL-17AKO mice. Furthermore, the reduction of inflammation by sympathectomy, usually…

Fate of ischemic limbs in patients with Buerger's disease based on our 30-year experience: does smoking have a definitive impact on the late loss of limbs?

PURPOSE: We herein review the long-term results of our series of critical ischemic limbs caused by Buerger's disease. METHODS: A retrospect … atients achieved remission with medical therapy and smoking cessation. Sixty-six patients underwent sympathectomy. Bypass to the crural arteries was performed in 23 limbs, with assisted primary patency rates of 67.0 and 45.6 % at five and 10 years. Graft failure caused major amputation in two out of 10 smokers, but no limbs were lost among the 12 ex-smokers. Th …

Quality of life before hyperhidrosis treatment as a predictive factor for oxybutynin treatment outcomes in palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that quality of life (QOL) evaluation before video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy for patients with hyperhidrosis may serve as a predictive factor for positive postoperative outcomes. Our study aims to analyze if this tendency is also observed in patients treated with oxybutynin for palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS: Five hundred sixty-five patients who submitted to a protocol treatment with oxybutynin were retrospectively analyzed between January 2007 and January 2012 and were divided into 2 groups according to QOL assessment before treatment…

β2-Adrenoceptor agonists are required for development of the asthma phenotype in a murine model.

β(2)-Adrenoceptor (β2AR) agonists are the most effective class of bronchodilators and a mainstay of asthma management. The first potent β2AR … ize epinephrine, phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase, or mice that had undergone pharmacological sympathectomy with reserpine to deplete epinephrine, had complete attenuation of these three cardinal features of the asthma phenotype. Furthermore, administration of the long-acting β2AR agonist, formoterol, a drug currently used in asthma treatment, to phenylet …
