Motor inhibition and cognitive flexibility in pathologic skin picking.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with pathologic skin picking (PSP) often report significant difficulty resisting the urges and drive to engage in picking behavior. Studies have shown significant inhibitory deficiencies (i.e. increased impulsivity) in subjects with other putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, such as trichotillomania, using objective tests. This study sought to assess motor inhibitory control and aspects of cognitive flexibility in a sample of individuals with PSP. METHOD: Twenty subjects with PSP (mean age 33.1+/-14.3 years; 85% female) and 20 healthy controls (mean age 31

Family support in advanced cancer.

Changes in the health care system have resulted in a shift of cancer care from the in-patient arena to ambulatory and home settings. This shift has likewise translated into increased family involvement in the day-to-day care of the person with cancer. Cancer patients have multifaceted needs, including disease and treatment monitoring, symptom management, medication administration, emotional support, assistance with personal care, and assistance with instrument care. Family caregivers may be ill prepared to assume these tasks, requiring information on the disease and treatment, as well as instr

Introducing Sharing Information to Stop Mass Shootings (SISMS): A Short Report on a Behavioral and Event-Level Dataset for the Study of Mass Public Shootings.

This paper is in response to the manuscript entitled, "Success, failure and emotions: Examining the relationship between performance feedback and emotions in diagnostic reasoning," (Jarrell, Harley, Lajoie, & Naismith, Educational Technology & Research Development, 65, 1263-1284: 2017) from a K-12 teacher and administrator educational perspective. Jarrell et al.'s (Educational Technology & Research Development, 65, 1263-1284: 2017) findings indicate a strong relationship between outcome emotions and performance tasks: highest performing medical students had the most positive emotions. Switching state to engage and sustain attention: Dynamic synchronization of the frontoparietal network.

Sustained attention (SA) is essential for maintaining focus over time, with disruptions linked to various neurological and psychiatric disorders. The oscillatory dynamics and functional connectivity in the dorsal frontoparietal network (dFPN) are crucial in SA. However, the neuronal mechanisms that control the level of SA, especially in response to heightened attentional demands, remain poorly understood. To examine the role of rhythmic synchronization in the dFPN in SA, we recorded local field potential and single unit activity in ferrets that performed the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task

Distinct neurochemical predictors for different phases of decision-making learning.

Fast and accurate sensory-motor mapping is characteristic of successful interaction with our environment and decision-making. Learning is crucial for the development of decision-making processes and has been linked to the balance of excitatory (glutamate) and inhibitory (γ-aminobutyric acid [GABA]) neurochemicals in the cortex. However, learning is not a unitary phenomenon and occurs across time. How neurochemical concentrations are involved, and the role of interventions like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) remains unclear. The efficacy of tDCS to modulate learning has been lin

SwinCLNet: a robust framework for brain tumor segmentation via shifted window attention and cross-scale fusion.

Despite significant breakthroughs in deep learning, brain tumor segmentation remains a challenging task due to the unclear tumor borders and the high degree of accuracy required. To overcome these concerns, we propose a new segmentation model, SwinCLNet, which integrates window-based multi-head self-attention, shifted window multi-head self-attention, cross-scale dual fusion, and residual large-kernel attention into the 3D U-Net architecture. First, the encoder employs the window-based multi-head and shifted window multi-head self-attention modules to capture rich contextual information. Secon

Autistic and nonautistic people evaluate eye contact cues in context to identify communicative opportunities.

Effective gaze-based joint attention requires distinguishing between communicative gaze and private gaze. Eye contact and repeated averted gaze shifts to the same location are key cues for gaze-based communication, but the temporal and perceptual dynamics of these cues in signaling communicative intent remain unclear. This study examines three perceptual properties of dynamic eye gaze displays and their influence on the perception of communicative intent. Autistic and nonautistic participants completed a semi-interactive task with an onscreen agent displaying dynamic eye movements searching fo

Posterior parietal cortex is causally involved in reward valuation but not in probability weighting during risky choice.

This study provides evidence that the posterior parietal cortex is causally involved in risky decision making via the processing of reward values but not reward probabilities. In the within-group experimental design, participants performed a binary lottery choice task following transcranial magnetic stimulation of the right posterior parietal cortex, left posterior parietal cortex, and a right posterior parietal cortex sham (placebo) stimulation. The continuous theta-burst stimulation protocol supposedly downregulating the cortical excitability was used. Both, mean-variance and the prospect th

A novel approach for determining instantaneous centers of rotation of the mandible with an intraoral scanner: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: Recording and reproducing mandibular movements have been of key importance in the practice of dentistry for over a century. Recently, it has become possible to use digital technologies for these tasks. This study presents a preliminary method to try to identify the mandibular instantaneous centres of rotation based solely on intraoral scanners. METHODS: The dentitions of four participants were scanned, multiple inter-occlusal registrations and buccal scans were performed in closed and opened positions. Blender software was used to align the meshes during the post-scan digital work

Longitudinal associations between executive control and body mass index across childhood.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains a prevalent public health concern. Executive control, a set of higher-order cognitive abilities for directing attention and behaviour, has been identified as a malleable factor potentially related to weight outcomes in youth. However, the directionality of this relationship remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study examined reciprocal associations between three executive control components-inhibitory control, working memory and flexible shifting-and BMI (body mass index) percentile during childhood. METHODS: At four points throughout elementary school, a c

Associations Between Self- and Informant-Reported Abilities of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and Cognitive Functions in Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults (OAs) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) show disabilities in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), which have been linked to compromised cognitive functioning. However, it is unclear which cognitive functions are primarily involved. The present study sought to identify the cognitive function(s) most strongly associated with the IADL limitations in MCI. METHOD: OAs with MCI (N = 120) completed cognitive tasks measuring general cognitive processing speed, working memory (WM) maintenance and updating, inhibition, and shifting ability. The effect of lower-limb prosthetic alignment on muscle activity during sit-to-stand.

People with a transtibial amputation (TTA) have altered motion during daily tasks, which may be influenced by prosthetic alignment. This study aimed to determine the effect of medial/lateral prosthetic alignment shifts on muscle activity, measured by integrated electromyography (iEMG), and to compare muscle activity between people with and without TTA during sit-to-stand. We quantified ground reaction forces and three-dimensional center-of-mass position to interpret muscle activity results. Compared to the prescribed alignment, the bilateral knee extensors had greater activity in the medial al

The contributions of executive functions to mathematical learning difficulties and mathematical talent during adolescence.

Are mathematical learning difficulties caused by impairment of the abilities that underlie mathematical talent? Or are mathematical difficulties and talent qualitatively different? The main goal of this study was to determine whether mathematical learning difficulties are explained by the same executive functions as mathematical talent. We screened a pool of 2,682 first-year high school students and selected 48 for evaluation, dividing them into three groups: those with mathematical learning difficulties (n = 16), those with typical performance (n = 16), and those with mathematical talent (n =

Saliency modulates behavioral strategies in response to social comparison.

Social comparison has been found to affect humans in many aspects including outcome evaluation, emotional reaction, and decision-making. Here, two experiments were conducted using a gambling task involving monetary gains and losses (absolute outcome: win/loss), whereby participants' outcome was either better or worse than the outcome of a paired player (relative outcome: better/worse). The results of experiment 1 showed that participants switched more frequently after absolute losses compared with absolute gains, consistent with previous studies showing a win-stay lose-shift heuristic in repea

A Brief Exposure to Leftward Prismatic Adaptation Enhances the Representation of the Ipsilateral, Right Visual Field in the Right Inferior Parietal Lobule.

A brief exposure to rightward prismatic adaptation (PA) was shown to shift visual field representation within the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) from the right to the left hemisphere. This change in hemispheric dominance could be interpreted as (1) a general effect of discrepancy in visuomotor alignment caused by PA or (2) a direction-specific effect of rightward PA. To test these hypotheses, we compared the effects of rightward and leftward PA on visual representation in normal human subjects. Three groups of normal subjects underwent an fMRI evaluation using a simple visual detection task be

Growth trajectories of alcohol information processing and associations with escalation of drinking in early adolescence.

This longitudinal study provided a comprehensive examination of age-related changes in alcohol outcome expectancies, subjective evaluation of alcohol outcomes, and automatic alcohol associations in early adolescence. A community sample (52% female, 75% White/non-Hispanic) was assessed annually for 3 years (mean age at the first assessment = 11.6 years). Results from growth modeling suggested that perceived likelihood of positive outcomes increased and that subjective evaluations of these outcomes were more positive with age. Perceived likelihood of negative outcomes declined with age. Automati

Training cognitive flexibility in patients with anorexia nervosa: a pilot randomized controlled trial of cognitive remediation therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Inefficient cognitive flexibility is considered a neurocognitive trait marker involved in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) is a specific treatment targeting this cognitive style. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and efficacy (by estimating the effect size) of specifically tailored CRT for AN, compared to non-specific cognitive training. METHOD: A prospective, randomized controlled, superiority pilot trial was conducted. Forty women with AN receiving treatment as usual (TAU) were randomized to recei

Eye position representation in human anterior parietal cortex.

Eye position helps locate visual targets relative to one's own body and modulates the distribution of attention in visual space. Whereas in the monkey, proprioceptive eye position signals have been recorded in the somatosensory cortex, in humans, no brain site has yet been associated with eye position. We aimed to disrupt the proprioceptive representation of the right eye in the left somatosensory cortex, presumably located near the representation of the right hand, using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Head-fixed subjects reported their perceived visual straight-ahead pos

Functional brain asymmetry, attentional modulation, and interhemispheric transfer in boys with Tourette syndrome.

We tested the hypothesis that children with Tourette syndrome (TS) would exhibit aberrant brain lateralization compared to a healthy control (HC) group in an attention-modulation version of a verbal dichotic listening task using consonant-vowel syllables. The modulation of attention to focus on the right ear stimulus in the dichotic listening situation is thought to involve the same prefrontal attentional and executive functions that are involved in the suppression of tics, whereas, performance when focusing attention on the left ear stimulus additionally involves a callosal transfer of inform

This study examined the executive functioning of 55 elementary school children with and without problems in written expression. Two groups reflecting children with and without significant writing problems were defined by an average primary trait rating across two separate narratives. The groups did not differ in terms of chronological age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, special education status, or presence of attention problems or receptive vocabulary capabilities; however, they did differ in reading decoding ability, and this variable was controlled for in all analyses.
