The term "lipoma arborescens" has been used to describe the diffuse infiltration of fat within hypertrophic synovial villi, a condition which has been most frequently described in the knee. We advocate the term "synovial lipomatosis arborescens" for this process and present what is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of this disorder isolated to the peroneal tendon sheath, with imaging, intraoperative, and histological correlation.

Traumas resulting from naso-orbitoethmoidal fractures and tumor surgery of the medial canthal region may cause orbital dystopia. A variety of techniques with many disadvantages, such as detachment and high cost, has been described for reattachment of medial canthal tendon. We present a new technique, namely, unitransnasal canthoplasty, which is easy to apply, cheap, and reliable. Two nonabsorbable sutures were passed through 2 drill holes to the nasal cavity, taken out from the nasal ostium, and were tied up. Upper and lower eyelids were fixed to the ipsilateral nasal bone.

Any restoration of hand function following tendon and nerve injury has to include the repair or replacement of the hand's ability to perform a great many tasks. It is hard at first to appreciate fully the loss that occurs with flexor tendon injury. Also sensibility can be compromised from tendon injury without direct injury to the nerve, as object recognition in the absence of vision requires finger movement. When peripheral nerve injury is combined with flexor tendon injury, sensibility is directly impaired. There is a loss in the sense of finger or thumb position, pain temperature and touch

We report a 10-year-old girl with enthesitis and Staphylococcus aureus tendon sheath abscess as complications of severe carbamazepine hypersensitivity. Our patient had an adverse reaction to intravenous immunoglobulin and this, as well as the use of corticosteroids, may have contributed to her condition.

Results of conservative treatment of 87 patients with "mallet finger" injuries with metallic and plastic splints are analyzed. All the patients were divided into 3 groups depending on time of treatment procedure. The 1st group consisted of 49 patients resorted to medical assistance in first 4 days after trauma, 2nd group 31 patients with 5 -- 28 days prescription of injury, 3rd group -- 7 patients with more 28 days prescription of injury. Positive results at 1st group was at 97.96% cases (average score 4.35), at 2nd group 83.87% (average score 4.03), 3rd group -- 71.43 (average score 3.57). Th

The purpose of this study was to improve our knowledge of the behavior of the Achilles tendon as a basis for decision-making in Achilles lengthening or tenotomy, we sonographically measured the normal and club feet of 101 babies, mean age 4 months, in standard parameters: tibio-talo-calcaneal angle, length of Achilles tendon, distance from tibia to calcaneus, and distance from a line parallel to the posterior cortex of the tibia to the calcaneus. All measurements were age-matched from birth to 1 year in maximal plantar and dorsal flexion. In conclusion, we describe the normal values for the fo

Knowledge of the functional anatomy of the extensor tendons with the sliding mechanism is essential for better understanding the surgical therapy and the postoperative care in the different trauma zones of the extensor tendon. In addition the localization of the injury is very important for the clinical findings, therapy, after-care and long term prognosis. Anatomical facts, injury mechanisms and associated injuries have to be considered in the therapy concept. Several therapy possibilities are known: immobilizing with splint for the closed rupture in zone I, reinsertion in zone III (with a te…

In pediatric patients, triggering of digits other than the thumb is uncommon and can have unique etiology. We present a juvenile patient whose trigger finger was associated with a solid calcified nodule on the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon.

Adult acquired flatfoot deformity progresses through well defined stages as set out by Johnson and Strom. Myerson modified this classification system with the addition of a fourth, more advanced stage of the disease. This stage describes the involvement of the tibiotalar joint in addition to the hindfoot malalignment seen in stages II and III. This most advanced stage is comprised of a hindfoot valgus deformity, resulting from degeneration of the posterior tibial tendon, with associated valgus tilting of the talus within the mortise. The deformity at the tibiotalar joint may or may not be rigi

Calcific tendinitis is a common disorder of the rotator cuff. Conservative treatment is frequently successful. For the patients remaining symptomatic after conservative treatment, excision of the calcium deposits offers a generally reliable pain relief. While calcific tendinitis is seen commonly affecting the supraspinatus tendon, it has been rarely reported involving the subscapularis tendon. We report on the clinical features, radiographic findings, arthroscopic treatment and results of one patient who presented a calcific tendonitis involving the subscapularis tendon of the left shoulder un

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures specific to the North American population has not been previously reported and current epidemiological data are primarily reported from European communities. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and to compare this data to those reported in European studies.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review from all five acute care hospitals in Edmonton from 1998 to 2002 (inclusive) were reviewed for Achilles tendon ruptures. Data such as gender, age, side, mecha

During the last 40 years, there has been an enormous amount of basic scientific research designed to improve our knowledge of the structure of tendons, the biomechanics of their action, their biologic response to injury and repair, the mechanical characteristics of various tendon suture methods, and the effect of postrepair motion stress on tendon strength and healing. These investigative efforts have given rise to improved methods of tendon repair and protocols for the early application of passive and active wrist and digital motion as a means to more rapidly increase the strength and gliding…

The most important difference between the various approaches to postoperative digital flexor tendon rehabilitation is how the repaired tendon is treated during the first three to six weeks, in the earliest stages of healing. Early mobilization is the most commonly reported method of managing the healing flexor tendon. There are many different protocols and abundant research to support published approaches to tendon management. With so many choices, today's hand therapist must understand not only what those choices are, but also why and when to use them. There is no one correct way to manage a

Nerve and tendon lacerations of the foot and ankle region are relatively common. Acute nerve and tendon injuries should be repaired with appropriate techniques at the time of initial wound exploration. Primary nerve repair may help minimize the risk of painful neuroma formation; primary tendon repair can lead to better functional results than delayed repair. Most chronic nerve injuries, except those to the tibial nerve or its major divisions, are managed by resection of a painful neuroma and burying the nerve ending in a protected area. Delayed reconstruction of tendon injuries is performed wh
