Effects of a Lottery Incentive on STI/HIV Incidence Among Female Sex Workers in Tanzania: Outcomes of Rewarding STI Prevention and Control in Tanzania (RESPECT-2).

Female sex workers (FSW) are a key population who experience a disproportionately high burden of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A growing body of evidence suggests that financial incentives can reduce risky sexual behavior and reduce HIV/STI incidence, however few studies have examined a lottery-based incentive mechanism or been conducted with FSW. We examined the effect of a lottery intervention on combined HIV/HSV2 incidence among FSW. The RESPECT II trial was an unmasked, two-arm, parallel group randomized controlled trial conducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (AEA RCT regis

Delivery of a telehealth supported home exercise program with dietary advice to increase plant-based protein intake in people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a 12-week randomised controlled feasibility trial.

This study evaluated the feasibility and safety of a telehealth delivered exercise plus plant-based protein diet in adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This was a 12-week, randomised controlled feasibility trial including twenty-eight adults aged > 45 years with NAFLD randomised to a home muscle strengthening program (3 d/week) with increased protein intake (target ∼1·2-1·5 g/kg/d) from predominately plant-based sources and behavioural change support (3-4 text messages/week) (Pro-Ex n 14) or usual care (UC, n 14). Feasibility was assessed via retention (≤ 10 % attrition), ad

Patient perceptions of disease burden and treatment of myasthenia gravis based on sentiment analysis of digital conversations.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare, autoimmune, antibody-mediated, neuromuscular disease. This study analyzed digital conversations about MG to explore unprovoked perspectives. Advanced search, data extraction, and artificial intelligence-powered algorithms were used to harvest, mine, and structure public domain digital conversations about MG from US Internet Protocol addresses (August 2021 to August 2022). Thematic analyses examined topics, mindsets, and sentiments/key drivers via natural language processing and text analytics. Findings were described by sex/gender and treatment experience with

Exploring the outcome "days with bothersome pain" and its association with pain intensity, disability, and quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the criterion validity, specifically the concurrent validity of the measure of days with bothersome pain, by investigating its association with measures of pain intensity, disability, and quality of life. METHODS: We used two separate cohorts to study the concurrent validity of "days with bothersome pain," by investigating its association with pain intensity, disability, and quality of life: (1) 321 patients with low back pain (LBP), using follow-up data at 1 year, and (2) 170 pregnant women with pelvic girdle pain (PGP), using data at 12 an

The development and evaluation of a mHealth, community education and navigation intervention to improve clinical breast examination uptake in Segamat Malaysia: A randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) screening uptake in Malaysia is low and a high number of cases present at a late stage. Community navigation and mobile health (mHealth) may increase screening attendance, particularly by women from rural communities. This randomized controlled study evaluated an intervention that used mHealth and community health workers to educate women about BC screening and navigate them to clinical breast examination (CBE) services in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Women aged 40-74 years, from Segamat, Malaysia, with a mobile phone number, who participated

Study protocol for the sheMATTERS study (iMproving cArdiovascular healTh in new moThERS): a randomized behavioral trial assessing the effect of a self-efficacy enhancing breastfeeding intervention on postpartum blood pressure and breastfeeding continuation in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have an elevated lifetime risk of chronic hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and premature cardiovascular disease. Because breastfeeding duration and exclusivity have been associated in observational studies with improved cardiovascular health, optimizing breastfeeding in those with HDP might be an unrealized cardio-prevention approach, in particular because individuals with HDP have more breastfeeding challenges. Breastfeeding supportive interventions targeting one's breastfeeding self-efficacy have been shown to improve br

Electronic cigarettes as a harm reduction strategy among patients with COPD: protocol for an open-label two arm randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is the most effective means of slowing the decline of lung function associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While effective smoking cessation treatments are available, they are underutilized and nearly half of people with COPD continue to smoke. By addressing both nicotine and behavioral dependence, electronic cigarettes (EC) could help people with COPD reduce the harm of combustible cigarettes (CC) through reductions in number of Cigarettes per Day (CPD) or quitting CC completely. The purpose of this pilot study is to identify barriers and f

Investigating the cost-effectiveness of three cessation interventions on a national scale using the Economics of Smoking in Pregnancy (ESIP) decision analytical model.

AIM: To measure the cost-effectiveness of adding text message (TMB), exercise (EB) and abstinent-contingent financial incentive-based (CFIB) stop smoking interventions to standard smoking cessation support for pregnant women in England. DESIGN: Modelling cost-effectiveness outcomes by separately adding three cessation interventions to standard cessation care offered to pregnant women in England. English National Health Service Stop Smoking Services (NHS SSS) statistics from 2019 to 2020 were used for estimating the base quit rate. Intervention effectiveness and cost data for interventions wer

PEP-CoV protocol: a PEP flute-self-care randomised controlled trial to prevent respiratory deterioration and hospitalisation in early COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 may progress to severe pulmonary disease, COVID-19. Currently, patients admitted to hospital because of COVID-19 have better prognosis than during the first period of the pandemic due to improved treatment. However, the overall societal susceptibility of being infected makes it pivotal to prevent severe courses of disease to avoid high mortality rates and collapse of the healthcare systems. Positive expiratory pressure (PEP) self-care is used in chronic pulmonary disease and has been shown to prevent pneumonia in a high-risk cohort of patients with leuka

Study protocol of the CHOiCE trial: a three-armed, randomized, controlled trial of home-based HPV self-sampling for non-participants in an organized cervical cancer screening program.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of cervical cancer screening programs is challenged by suboptimal participation and coverage. Offering cervico-vaginal self-sampling for human papillomavirus testing (HPV self-sampling) to non-participants can increase screening participation. However, the effect varies substantially among studies, especially depending on the approach used to offer HPV self-sampling. The present trial evaluates the effect on participation in an organized screening program of a HPV self-sampling kit mailed directly to the home of the woman or mailed to the woman's home on demand on

Which needs do children, adolescents, and young adults with ME/CFS and their parents express and feel? - Qualitative study in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex, multi-system disease that significantly deteriorates the quality of life for those affected. There is no established effective treatment, and a lack of research on what is needed by severely affected young people with ME/CFS and their caring parents to cope with the disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the needs of young people affected and their parents in order to subsequently build a tailored treatment model for this age group upon this basis. METHODS: Needs were explored using topic-guided f

Effects of the Fit2Thrive technology-supported physical activity promotion intervention components on sedentary behavior and light physical activity in breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Less sedentary time (ST) and more light physical activity (LPA) are associated with improved health outcomes among breast cancer survivors. However, less is known about whether interventions designed to increase moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) also influence time spent sedentary and in LPA. This study explored the overall and component-specific effects of the Fit2Thrive technology-supported MVPA intervention on ST and LPA in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Physically inactive breast cancer survivors (n = 269; Mage = 52.5; SD = 9.9) received a core intervention (Fitbit

Effectiveness of culturally appropriate antenatal education packages to improve birth preparedness and complication readiness in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Birth preparedness and complication readiness (BPCR) remain essential components of maternal survival strategies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Suboptimal antenatal education contributes significantly to delayed recognition of obstetric danger signs and late care-seeking. Delays in recognising obstetric danger signs and seeking care contribute to high maternal mortality in LMICs. Culturally tailored antenatal education packages have been increasingly used to improve BPCR; however, evidence across LMICs has not been systematically synthesised. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise
