The effect of Emdogain on ectopic bone formation in tubes of rat demineralized dentin matrix.

BACKGROUND: Emdogain (EMD) is made from enamel matrix proteins (EMPs) from the tooth germ of swine and propylene glycol alginate (PGA) as a matrix. The function of EMD is known to differentiate cells of the dental follicle into cementoblasts. However, little is known about the effect of EMD on mesenchymal cells in other tissue. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether EMD has the ability to induce hard tissue when applied with or without demineralized dentin matrix. METHODS: Half of the dentin tubes prepared from rat incisors were demineralized by treatment with 0.6 N

Extraradicular diffusion of hydrogen peroxide and pH changes associated with intracoronal bleaching of discoloured teeth using different bleaching agents.

AIM: To evaluate the extraradicular pH and hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion when either 35% carbamide peroxide (CP), 35% HP or sodium perborate (SP) is used for intracoronal bleaching of artificially discoloured teeth. METHODOLOGY: Single rooted extracted human premolars were stained with whole blood cells. After shaping and cleaning, they were root filled and a base cement placed 1 mm below the buccal cementoenamel junction (CEJ). Four cemental defects were prepared just below the CEJ on each root surface. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 11 specimens, and intracoronally b

Age-dependent changes of the periodontal ligament in rats.

Even after the end of the natural tooth eruption, there is a continuous renewal of the periodontal collagenous fiber system, depending on functional demands. The aim of this study was to analyse the age-dependent changes and regional differences of the collagen renewal rate of the periodontal ligament in healthy rats. The study was performed by autoradiography of the molars of rats aged 1, 8, and 18 months, where collagen was labelled by intravenously applied 3H-proline. After an 8-hour incorporation period, the animals were killed. For comparative examinations, molar roots were subdivided int

A scanning electron and confocal laser microscope investigation of tetracycline-affected human dentine.

Because of the well reported dental side-effects of tetracycline administration, the drug should not be administered to children. However, it and its derivatives are often administered over a prolonged period for treatment of acne in young adults. Dental side effects are also noticed in these patients. The aim of this study was to examine with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) the root dentine of a tooth from a young adult affected by tetracycline therapy. The palatal root of an upper third molar, demonstrating distinct areas of tetracycline stain

Surgically assisted rapid orthodontic lengthening of the maxilla in primates--a pilot study.

Orthodontic and surgical treatment of patients with maxillary retrusion and/or midface hypoplasia is challenging. This study was designed to show that the maxilla can be successfully lengthened by surgical assisted rapid orthopedic movement, using the principles of distraction osteogenesis. Three experimental and three control adolescent cynomolgus primates were used in this study. Metallic markers were placed in the cranial base and the maxilla and cephalometric x-ray films were taken. An orthodontic appliance was constructed with a Glen-Ross screw (Dentaurum, Newtown, Pa.) oriented anteropos

Experimentally induced resorption cavities in rat molars.

The incidence and ultrastructure of resorption cavities were studied in albino rat molars. The transseptal fiber system between the 1st and 2nd maxillary molars in 30 albino rats aged 50 days was transected by buccopalatal incision. Fifty approximal surfaces represented the experimental material. Unaffected interproximal areas and approximal surfaces of adjacent teeth as well as of 10 teeth from five healthy, unoperated rats served as controls. The rats scheduled for operation were assigned to experimental groups each comprising three or four animals. Following injury, the incisional wounds we

Interventions for treating traumatised permanent front teeth: avulsed (knocked out) and replanted.

BACKGROUND: Dental trauma is common. One of the most severe injuries is when a permanent tooth is knocked completely out (avulsed) of the mouth. In most circumstances the tooth should be replanted as quickly as possible. There is uncertainty on how best to prepare teeth for replantation. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of a range of interventions for managing traumatised permanent teeth with avulsion injuries. SEARCH STRATEGY: The Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register (to 28th October 2009); CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library 2009, Issue 4); MEDLINE (1950 to October 2009); EMBASE (1980

Alveolar ridge preservation with lyophilized microspheres of human dental pulp stem cells following 3D dynamic osteogenic induction.

The clinical use of bone graft materials for alveolar ridge preservation following tooth extraction has become a standard procedure to facilitate subsequent implant restoration and prosthetic rehabilitation. However, the therapeutic efficacy of these materials is substantially limited by their bio-inertness, lack of cellular activity, and unpredictable resorption rates. The development of bioactive osteogenic materials capable of host integration and active promotion of bone regeneration would represent a significant advancement over current clinical protocols. To address this challenge, our r
