Some risk factors for the progression of periodontal disease.

Inflammatory periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases of mankind. Gingival inflammation is widespread, but advanced periodontitis is limited to relatively small subgroups of the population. Gingivitis is initiated by microbial plaque deposits on the dento-gingival interface but progression to periodontitis is modified by several environmental, behavioural, biological and health care variables. This paper reviews the reports dealing with some risk factors for periodontal disease published in recent years and compares the data with findings in a Ljubljana population. It is conclude

The history of oral hygiene products: how far have we come in 6000 years?

How far have we come in the past six millennia? Numerous dental epidemiological studies indicate that people are keeping their teeth longer than over before in this century. Agents and devices have evolved, by custom and by research, to enable people, with professional assistance, to maintain good oral health. Our diets, our lifestyles and our professional colleagues have "conspired" as pathogenic influences on oral health. The profession has met the challenge by developing and perfecting a myriad of devices and agents to thwart these pathogenic factors. Patient motivation and professional acc

Efficacy of Listerine, Meridol and chlorhexidine mouthrinses as supplements to regular tooth cleaning measures.

The anti-plaque, anti-gingivitis and anti-microbial efficacies of a phenolic compound (Listerine) and 2 different amine/stannous fluoride mouthwashes (Meridol I, II) were compared when these solutions were used in addition to usual tooth cleaning. A placebo preparation was utilized as a negative control and a chlorhexidine solution as a positive control in this double-blind study. After professional tooth cleaning, 49 volunteers continued their habitual, self-performed and non-supervised oral hygiene for a period of 2 weeks, in order to have a more standard baseline. At day 0, they began to ri

Bridging the Implementation Gap: Artificial Intelligence in Periodontology from Proof-of-Concept to Clinical Governance-A Systematic Scoping Review with Evidence from Kazakhstan.

Background/Objectives: Periodontitis, the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide, affects over 740 million people and disproportionately burdens transitional economies. Although artificial intelligence (AI)-including deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML)-achieves high diagnostic accuracy in research settings, a gap persists between proof-of-concept and real-world deployment, especially where regulation is nascent, as in Kazakhstan. This scoping review maps global evidence on AI for periodontal diagnosis, risk prediction, and monitoring; evaluates governance frameworks; and proposes a co

Ultrasound Characterization of Oral Soft Tissues in vivo Using the Burr Speckle Model.

Periodontal (gum) diseases, reportedly affect 4 out of 10 adults 30 years of age or older in the USA. The standard of care for clinical assessments of these diseases is bleeding on probing, which is invasive, subjective and semi-qualitative. Thus, research on proposing alternative noninvasive modalities for clinical assessments of periodontal tissues is crucial. Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) has shown promises in noninvasive assessments of various diseases in soft biological tissues; however, it has not been employed in periodontology. Here as the first step, we focused on QUS-based characteri

An epidemiological study of dentition status, treatment needs and correlation with the dietary and oral hygiene practices among school-going children population of West Bengal.

INTRODUCTION: The global burden of disease study 2016 estimated that oral diseases affected 3.58 billion people with dental caries. Severe tooth loss and total edentulous condition have been reported as one of the leading causes of years lived with disability in some high-income countries. Oral health inadequacies exist among and between different population groups, and social determinants have a strong impact on oral health. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines oral health as "a state of being free from chronic mouth and facial pain, oral infections and sores, periodontal diseases, too

Preventive effect of fucoxanthin administration on intra-abdominal adhesion: An experimental animal study.

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of intra-abdominal adhesion (IAA) is previous abdominal surgery and mortality. IAA can cause serious complications such as chronic abdominal pain, ileus, and infertility. Approximately 3% of all laparotomies are related to adhesions. IAA reduces the quality of life of the patient, causes morbidity, and increases health expenditures. In this study, we aimed to investigate the preventive effect of fucoxanthin (Fx) on IAA in the intra-abdominal surgical adhesion model that experimentally created in rats. METHODS: This study used 21 Sprague-Dawley rats divided in
