Tuberculosis of the temporomandibular joint.

INTRODUCTION: Extrapulmonary and extra-spinal tuberculosis (TB) is rare, even in countries where the disease is endemic. Ten percent of these localizations are cervico-facial. Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is very unusual. We present the features of such a case. REVIEW: We looked for patients managed for TMJ TB in 2 Maxillofacial Surgery departments and in 1 Pneumology & Phthisiology Department since 1992. The second part of the study was a literature review. One case was found in our departments and 15 other cases were found in published data. Most patients were women with

Comparative Analysis of Tuberculous, Brucellar, and Pyogenic Spondylodiscitis: A Retrospective Evaluation of 114 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Spondylodiscitis is an infection of the vertebral bodies, most commonly caused by pyogenic bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Brucella spp. The infection is usually spread by hematologic route. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical, laboratory and radiologic characteristics of patients diagnosed with tuberculous (TS), brucellar (BS) and pyogenic (PS) spondylodiscitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2010 and 2024, 114 adult patients with spondylodiscitis were evaluated retrospectively. Diagnoses were based on microbiologic and radiologic findings. Clinical impro

Case reports on integrated management of tubercular disease.

BACKGROUND: Host immunity plays an important role in prevention of disease as is evident by the increased incidence of Tuberculosis (TB) in immuno-compromised population of HIV infected, diabetes inflicted, immune-suppressant therapy and elderly people. Rising incidence of antibiotic resistance has led to resurgence of TB of epidemic proportions. Integrated treatment with add on homeopathy in addition to anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) appears to improve outcome in TB. The intervention has been integrated treatment with homeopathy regime, which is using a patient specific, disease specific a

A case of postoperative tuberculous spondylitis with a bizarre course.

Postoperative infections following spine surgery are usually attributable to bacterial organisms. Staphylococcus aureus is known to be the most common single pathogen leading to this infection, and the number of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is increasing. However, there is a paucity of literature addressing postoperative infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We encountered a case of tuberculous spondylitis after spine surgery. A man had fever with low back pain three weeks after posterior interbody fusion with instrumentation for a herniated interverteb

MR imaging of central nervous system tuberculosis.

TB involving the CNS and its coverings is a complex and potentially devastating disease. The increasing incidence of this disease in both immunologically normal as well as immunologically incompetent populations makes the subject of TB one of universal concern. Although its appearance on MR is not specific, it is important in the proper clinical setting to recognize the range of possible patterns that can be observed on images. The inclusion of TB in the differential diagnosis on the basis of the patient's region of origin, the socioeconomic background of the patient, and the presence of under

Unmasking the Hidden Culprit: Diagnostic Challenges in Thoracic Spinal Osteomyelitis Following COVID-19 Infection.

Spinal osteomyelitis (SO) is a rare but serious infection of the vertebrae with occasional epidural involvement. Diagnosis is complicated by nonspecific findings that oftentimes mimic malignancy or tuberculosis, with typical methods of diagnosis such as blood culture and image-guided biopsy possessing varying levels of sensitivity. In this report, we present a rare case of SO that highlights these diagnostic difficulties. SO should be considered in a patient who presents with non-specific back pain. In such cases, non-diagnostic image-guided biopsy attempts do not rule out SO. Further investig
