Neurocognitive and Neuropsychiatric Trajectories in a Post-COVID Cohort: A Descriptive Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive dysfunction ("brain fog") is a common manifestation of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) and may persist long after the acute infection. While cross-sectional studies have described cognitive deficits, longitudinal evidence on recovery trajectories remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal observational study of neurocognitive performance and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with PACS. Participants underwent assessment with 20 standardized tests covering five cognitive domains (memory, attention, language, executive functions, psychomotor processing

Impact of ventricle size on neuropsychological outcomes in treated pediatric hydrocephalus: an HCRN prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: In pediatric hydrocephalus, shunts tend to result in smaller postoperative ventricles compared with those following an endoscopic … -scale IQ (q = 0.77), 23 tests showed no univariable association with postoperative ventricle size. Verbal learning delayed recall (p = 0.006, q = 0.118) and visual spatial judgment (p = 0.006, q = 0.118) were negatively associated with larger ventricles and remained significant after multivariate adjustment for age, etiology, and procedure type. However, neither …

The LIFE Cognition Study: design and baseline characteristics.

Observational studies have shown beneficial relationships between exercise and cognitive function. Some clinical trials have also demonstrat … tive data. At baseline, participants completed the modified Mini Mental Status Examination, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test, Digit Symbol Coding, Modified Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, and a computerized battery, selected to be sensitive to changes in speed of processing and executive functioning. During follow up, participants completed the same battery, along wit …

Apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele and lorazepam effects on memory in high-functioning older adults.

CONTEXT: The apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 allele has been implicated as a significant risk factor in the development of late-onset Alzheimer disease, but the evidence of cognitive sequelae in healthy individuals has been mixed. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the APOE epsilon4 allele increases susceptibility to lorazepam-induced verbal learning impairment in nondemented older adults. DESIGN: A placebo-controlled crossover design. SETTING: A community-based sample of subjects. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-four cognitively intact and highly educated (>12 years) adults. Twenty-four subjects (mean age, …

Errorless learning and social problem solving ability in schizophrenia: an examination of the compensatory effects of training.

Compensatory approaches to cognitive rehabilitation in schizophrenia aim to improve functioning by bypassing or compensating for impaired areas of cognition. At present, there is little empirical evidence that these approaches actually compensate for neurocognitive impairments in improving community functioning. This study examined the effects of errorless learning (EL), a compensatory cognitive rehabilitation approach, on social problem solving ability in schizophrenia. The study included 60 outpatients who met DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Participants receiv

Prenatal alcohol exposure and academic achievement at age six: a nonlinear fit.

This is a report on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the academic achievement of children at 6 years of age. In this longitudinal study, women were interviewed at the end of each trimester of pregnancy, at delivery, and at 8, 18, 36, and 72 months postpartum. The women were of lower socioeconomic status, high school-educated, and moderate users of alcohol. The offspring received age-appropriate physical and developmental assessments at each follow-up. Linear regression and nonlinear curve fitting were used to investigate the nature and shape of the relationship between prenatal alco

Interactional Patterns of Adolescent Health Education: A Roter Interaction Analysis System-Based Study in Moroccan Secondary Schools.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which health-related behaviors consolidate. In Moroccan secondary schools, health education remains largely educator-guided, with limited evidence of classroom communication. This study analyzes how verbal interaction patterns structure health education delivery at middle and high school levels. METHODS: An exploratory mixed-methods study was conducted in five Moroccan secondary institutions (N = 169 students). Verbal interactions (1024 utterances) were coded using the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS), adapted to the Mo

Recruiting spatial-numerical representations to increase arithmetic fluency in low-income students.

This study examined the effects of training involving spatial versus nonspatial representations of numerical magnitude for promoting arithmetic fluency. The key goal was to advance theoretical understanding of the relation between spatial and math learning, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for the development of future educational interventions. Toward this goal, the study tested the hypothesis that the use of spatial representations during training facilitates arithmetic fluency via improvements in numerical magnitude knowledge. Participants (first graders from low-income racially/e

Additive and interaction effects of working memory and motor sequence training on brain functional connectivity.

Although shared behavioral and neural mechanisms between working memory (WM) and motor sequence learning (MSL) have been suggested, the additive and interactive effects of training have not been studied. This study aimed at investigating changes in brain functional connectivity (FC) induced by sequential (WM + MSL and MSL + WM) and combined (WM × MSL) training programs. 54 healthy subjects (27 women; mean age: 30.2 ± 8.6 years) allocated to three training groups underwent twenty-four 40-min training sessions over 6 weeks and four cognitive assessments including functional MRI. Hippocampal vascular reserve associated with cognitive performance and hippocampal volume.

Medial temporal lobe dependent cognitive functions are highly vulnerable to hypoxia in the hippocampal region, yet little is known about the relationship between the richness of hippocampal vascular supply and cognition. Hippocampal vascularization patterns have been categorized into a mixed supply from both the posterior cerebral artery and the anterior choroidal artery or a single supply by the posterior cerebral artery only. Hippocampal arteries are small and affected by pathological changes when cerebral small vessel disease is present. We hypothesized, that hippocampal vascularization pat

[22q11.2 microdeletion].

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), most frequently caused by a de novo microdeletion on the long arm of chromosome 22, is one of the most common neurogenetic syndromes. The cognitive and behavioral characteristics associated with the 22q11.2 phenotype can be quite heterogeneous, part of the reason the syndrome is often detected very late, if at all. Though in individuals with more severe cardiac, respiratory, or speech and language problems, 22q11DS is more easily detected at a young age. The cognitive profile in 22q11DS varies between borderline IQ and mild mental retardation. Less than hal

Estrogen treatment effects on cognition, memory and mood in male-to-female transsexuals.

Gonadal hormones, particularly estrogens, have been suggested to influence memory and cognitive tasks that show sex differences. Previously, we reported that male-to-female (M-F) transsexuals undergoing estrogen treatment for sex re-assignment scored higher on verbal Paired Associate Learning (PAL) than a transsexual control group awaiting estrogen treatment. The present study used a more robust design to examine further associations between estrogen and cognition. We assessed additional aspects of memory, including visual, spatial, object and location memory, other cognitive abilities that sh

Developmental manual dyspraxia: a lesson in mind and brain.

For decades, pediatricians assiduously documented "soft neurologic signs" in children referred for school learning difficulties, although pediatric neurologists, including Charles F. Barlow, pointed out the dissociation between most neuropsychological abnormalities and the motor findings in question. Later, large epidemiologic studies confirmed the independence of soft signs from other neuropsychological defects. We used a standardized dyspraxia battery to study 164 schoolchildren 5 to 12 years old. We found that in the group as a whole there was a positive correlation between motor performanc
