Peripheral Vestibular Dysfunction and Postural Control Impairments in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Multimodal Clinical and Instrumental Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) has been conceptualized as a structural spinal deformity; emerging evidence suggests that postural control and vestibular mechanisms may contribute to curve development and functional severity. This study investigated the relationship between radiological parameters, postural stability, and vestibular dysfunction in adolescents with IS. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort of 177 patients aged 8-22 years was analyzed between 2022 and 2024. Standard radiography was performed on 135 participants to evaluate the major curve as establis

[Investigation on vertigoes in childhood].

This paper analysed the pathogenesis and the vestibular test results of 87 cases of vertigo in the childhood below the age of 13 years old. 83 cases (95.4%) were vestibular peripheral lesions, and 4 cases were vestibular central lesions. 34.5% of them were benign paroxysmal vertigo and 14.9% were the Meniere's disease which all occurred at the age more than 9 years old. The appearances of ENG were semicircular canal hypofunction in 57 cases (65.5%). The function of ocular movement was abnormal in a few cases. The posturography results were compared with an age-matched control group. Posturogra

[Bilateral vestibulopathy].

The leading symptoms of bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) are postural imbalance and unsteadiness of gait, deficits of spatial memory and navigation. The etiology of BVP remains unclear in more than 50% of patients: in these cases neurodegeneration is assumed. Frequent known causes are ototoxicity mainly due to gentamicin, bilateral Menière's disease, autoimmune diseases, meningitis and bilateral vestibular schwannoma, as well as an association with cerebellar degeneration. The diagnosis of BVP is based on a bilaterally reduced or absent function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). Head impulse

Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction in Quantitative Head Impulse Test: Clinical Characteristics in 23 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To explore clinical features of patients with bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH) verified in motorized head impulse test (MHIT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined clinical records of 23 adult patients (10 males and 13 females), whose gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in the MHIT was bilaterally lowered. Fifteen of 62 unilateral cochlear implant (CI) recipients routinely tested both pre- and postoperatively with the MHIT had BVH. Eight of 198 vestibular outpatients selected to the MHIT due to clinical causes had BVH. Clinical characteristics and a questionnaire regarding cur

Performance of Fukuda Stepping Test as a function of the severity of caloric weakness in chronic dizzy patients.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the Fukuda Stepping Test (FST) is to measure asymmetrical vestibulospinal reflex tone resulting from labyrinthine dysfunction. The FST is a low cost evaluation for dizzy patients; however, when compared with gold standard caloric irrigation unilateral weakness (UW) value ≥25%, the FST has not been shown to be a sensitive tool for identifying unilateral vestibular hypofunction. PURPOSE: The purpose of this technical report is to further evaluate the clinical utility of FST with and without headshake as a function of increased caloric asymmetry for individuals with un

Auditory and vestibular system findings in patients with vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia.

Impairment of the auditory-vestibular system has been reported in patients with vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD), but little is known about the underlying cause of the symptoms. Auditory testing (pure tone audiometry, auditory brain stem response and stapedius reflex) and vestibular tests (assessment of nystagmus, eye tracking tests, caloric test and rotational test) were performed in 23 patients with auditory-vestibular symptoms and/or cranial nerve impairment associated with VBD. Specific evidence of auditory and/or vestibular system impairment was observed in 19 cases (83%). Among patie

The Effects of Vestibular Implants and Other Existing Treatment Options of Individuals with Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction: A Review.

Vestibular dysfunction (VD) is an experience that is shared by nearly 35% of Americans above the age of 40 (nearly 69 million). This percentage increases to 80% when looking at the population of individuals over the age of 80. VD can have tremendously negative health outcomes for patients. Improper vestibular function can result in a loss of balance and patients often cite vertigo as a common symptom, which is often associated with dramatically reduced quality of life. Falls are another common clinically significant outcome of VD and place a huge social and financial burden on the patient and

Assessment of vestibulo-ocular reflex and its adaptation during stop-and-go car rides in motion sickness susceptible passengers.

Motion sickness is a physiological condition that negatively impacts a person's comfort and will be an emerging condition in autonomous vehicles without proper countermeasures. The vestibular system plays a key role in the origin of motion sickness. Understanding the susceptibility and (mal) adaptive mechanisms of the highly integrated vestibular system is a prerequisite for the development of countermeasures. We hypothesize a differential association between motion sickness and vestibular function in healthy individuals with and without susceptibility for motion sickness. We quantified vestib

Perilymphatic fistula in cabin attendants: an incapacitating consequence of flying with common cold.

A perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is an abnormal communication between the inner ear and the middle ear that leaks perilymph. PLF is considered rare, but is known to occur during childbirth, straining, weightlifting, head trauma, and diving with middle ear equalizing problems. It has also, anecdotally, been described in connection with flying. The symptoms are uncharacteristic vertigo and, in some cases, hearing impairment and tinnitus. This study describes four cases of PLF during a period of 6 mo in a major Scandinavian airline company employing approximately 3000 cabin attendants (CAs). None of
