Visual impairments in the first year after traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: This article reviews literature regarding individuals with traumatic brain injury who have vision related impairments up to one year, post-injury. Such impairments may impact rehabilitation of activities of daily living and mobility since vision is integral in much of what one does on a daily basis. METHODS: Search of Medline, Ovid, and PubMed was performed using terms including: traumatic brain injury, visual deficits after brain injury, vision and traumatic brain injury, and ADLs after brain injury. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were analyzed and reviewed. A range of visual and vis

Stereopsis in bilaterally multifocal pseudophakic patients.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate stereoacuity in patients with bilateral implantation of an aspheric bifocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: Thirty patients scheduled for cataract surgery were implanted with the aspheric bifocal AcrySof ReSTOR IOL. Stereoacuity was measured using the vectographic Titmus and Random dot stereotests (fixed disparity) and the Howard–Dolman apparatus (threshold disparity) under photopic conditions (85 cd/m2) after phacoemulsification for cataract surgery in 30 patients with low astigmatism (≤1D). Visual acuity at distance and near was also ex

Normative monocular visual acuity for early treatment diabetic retinopathy study charts in emmetropic children 5 to 12 years of age.

OBJECTIVE: To provide normative data for children tested with Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) charts. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 252 Native American (Tohono O'odham) children aged 5 to 12 years. On the basis of cycloplegic refraction conducted on the day of testing, all were emmetropic (myopia < or =0.25 diopter [D] spherical equivalent, hyperopia < or =1.00 D spherical equivalent, and astigmatism < or =0.50 D in both eyes). METHODS: Monocular visual acuity was tested at 4 m, using 1 ETDRS chart for the right eye (RE) and another for the left

[Measurement set-up for estimation of colour discrimination thresholds of colour vision deficiencies and while wearing coloured filters].

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, several techniques for the evaluation of colour vision deficiencies are well established. Most of them are designed for the detection of congenital or pathological changes. Due to the narrow-banded light sources, used in monitors or anomaloscopes, the human gamut can be addressed only in part. With these set-ups, the impact of coloured filters on colour vision such as blue light filtering intraocular lenses cannot be investigated precisely. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The technique is based on the visual matching of colour differences between two halves of a test f

Prevalence and causes of visual impairment in low-middle income school children in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

PURPOSE: Assess prevalence and causes of vision impairment among low-middle income school children in São Paulo. METHODS: Cluster sampling was used to obtain a random sample of children ages 11 to 14 years from public schools (grades 5-8) in three districts from June to November 2005. The examination included visual acuity testing, ocular motility, and examination of the external eye, anterior segment, and media. Cycloplegic refraction and fundus examination were performed in children with uncorrected visual acuity 20/40 or worse in either eye. A principal cause of visual impairment was deter

Visual function in epilepsy patients treated with initial valproate monotherapy.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether initial valproate (VPA) monotherapy for the treatment of epilepsy causes visual field defects and visual dysfunction. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, visual fields were examined with the kinetic Goldmann and automated Humphrey perimeters, contrast sensitivity function with the Pelli-Robson letter chart and colour vision with the Standard Pseudoisochromatic Plates Part 2 (SPP 2) and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test (FM 100) in eighteen epilepsy patients (aged 18--50 years, 30.2.+/-10 years, mean+/-S.D.) treated with initial valproate monotherapy for 2--20 ye

[Do prisms according to Hans-Joachim Haase influence ocular prevalence?].

BACKGROUND: Ocular prevalence is defined as an unequal weighting of the eyes in the directional perception of stereo objects. Opinions differ as to the cause and relevance of ocular prevalence. Hans-Joachim Haase suggested that ocular prevalence is due to fixation disparity, brought about by incomplete compensation of heterophoria. He further suggested that prismatic spectacles determined by his "measuring and correcting methodology" (MKH) could restore bicentral fixation and thus establish a perceptual balance between both eyes. METHODS: We examined 10 non-strabismic subjects with a visual a

Computerized color perimetry in multiple sclerosis.

Color visual field analysis has proven highly sensitive for early visual impairments diagnosis in MS, yet it has never attained widespread popularity usually because the procedure is difficult to standardize, the devices are costly, and the test is fatiguing. We propose a computerized procedure running on standard PC, cost effective, clonable, and easy handled. Two hundred and sixty-four colored patches subtending 1 degree angle vision, with selected hues and low saturation levels are sequentially and randomly displayed on gray equiluminous background of the PC screen subtending 24 degrees x 4

Poor visual discrimination and visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease.

This study examined the relationship between deficits in color and contrast discrimination and visual hallucinations (VH) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal visual acuity. Thirty-five nondemented and nonpsychotic PD patients with normal visual acuity and without major ophthalmologic disease were interviewed twice and divided into two groups: hallucinators (n = 14) and non-hallucinating controls (n = 21). The groups were compared for color vision (assessed by Lanthony D-15 [LD] and Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue [FM] tests), and for contrast sensitivity (tested by Vis tech tables

False perception of motion in a patient who cannot compensate for eye movements.

We are usually unaware of the motion of an image across our retina that results from our own movement. For instance, during slow-tracking eye movements we do not mistake the shift of the image projected onto the retina for motion of the world around us, but instead perceive a stable world. Following early suggestions by von Helmholtz, it is commonly believed that this spatial stability is achieved by subtracting the retinal motion signal from an internal reference signal, such as a copy of the movement command (efference copy). Object motion is perceived only if the two differ. Although this c

Prospective study of New Zealand infants with birth weight less than 1500 g and screened for retinopathy of prematurity: visual outcome at age 7-8 years.

AIM: To determine the visual outcome at 7-8 years in very low birth weight (VLBW: birth weight < 1500 g) infants screened for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: In 1986 all 413 VLBW infants admitted to neonatal units in New Zealand were enrolled in a prospective study of acute ROP. Surviving infants were traced and assessed at a home visit. Visual assessment comprised examination for abnormal and range of eye movements, visual fields, distance and near visual acuity, stereopsis, and photorefraction. RESULTS: Of 338 infants surviving to discharge, 313 (93%) had been examined for acute

Reliability of visual acuity measurements and screening under field conditions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this analysis was to investigate the reliability of visual acuity screening and measurements made under field conditions when standardization of all test conditions is not possible. SETTING AND METHODS: In the Washington County Follow-Up Eye Study conducted in 1985 among cases of ocular histoplasmosis and controls from the same community who had been selected in 1970, a primary goal was to obtain a current visual acuity measurement of each eye of each participant in order to assess 15-year changes in visual acuity. Both visual acuity screening and measurement were acco

Alzheimer's disease and the eye.

AD patients may have substantial defects in the visual system despite a normal routine eye exam. Specific methods should be utilized to assess the ability of these patients to understand what they see and read. Subtle defects of eye movements may be present. Problems with contrast sensitivity, color vision, and stereo vision may be also be present, as well as early signs of optic atrophy. An awareness of the specific problems that AD patients present will lead the clinician to accurate diagnosis.

Visual thresholds in aphakia and pseudophakia.

Following extracapsular senile cataract extraction, visual thresholds were measured in 15 aphakic eyes corrected with glasses and compared with an appropriately matched group of 23 eyes with poly (methyl methacrylate) posterior chamber lenses. All subjects were six months to three years postoperative and had 20/30 or better visual acuity. The paramacular dark adapted threshold, the foveal luminance threshold, and the glare effect on both thresholds were not significantly different in the two groups despite the optical differences between aphakic and pseudophakic correction.

Vision in the elderly and its use in the social environment.

A randomized sample of 601 subjects aged 65 or over were examined for their visual function and their use of vision in daily life. The participation percentage was 91% and constant throughout all age groups, and the population sample studied is considered to be representative of the population of the city of Turku in Finland. The best corrected visual acuity was found to be good (0.8 or 0.7/0.3) in 73%, with a gradual decline with age to 20% in late senescence (85 years or over). The poorest acuity level of less than 0.1 was found in 1% of the entire study population and in 7% of those aged 85

Visual evoked responses and visual symptoms in multiple sclerosis.

Absolute latency, interocular difference in latency, and waveform of visual evoked responses (VER) to checkerboard reversal stimuli recorded from the midline of the skull were studied in 104 multiple sclerosis patients, 25 to 50 years of age, classified according to visual symptomatology. Group 1 had strong evidence of past or present optic neuritis. Patients with blurring of vision, diplopia, and undefined visual complaints were assigned to group 2, while group 3 contained patients with no visual symptoms but suspected diagnosis of multiple sclerosis on other grounds. The three parameters exp
