North Atlantic right whale detection and localisation using deep learning, spectrogram cross-correlation, and nonlinear Bayesian inversion.

We present a processing routine for marine mammal call detection and localisation, using North Atlantic right whale (NARW) upcalls and moans passively recorded by a sonobuoy grid in July 2018 in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. Right whales are critically endangered and at risk from ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement. We demonstrate the effectiveness of passive acoustic monitoring followed by a three-step analysis as a mitigation tool. The first step detects NARW calls using a publicly available deep learning model, trained on open acoustic datasets, adapted and optimised for

Acoustic event detection for spatiotemporal patterns of bird activity in protected areas.

The spatiotemporal variation in bird vocalization activity reflects systematic patterns related to circadian rhythms and human activity intensity. Understanding these patterns is crucial for interpreting bird diversity in protected areas increasingly impacted by human activities. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) enables long-term, noninvasive tracking of these patterns, yet the sheer volume of complex data poses significant analytical challenges. Acoustic event detection (AED) models provide a critical solution by extracting acoustic events from continuous recordings. Using PAM data collected

5-HT2A receptors in the prelimbic cortex VIP-expressing interneurons: A mechanism for psychedelic-induced innate fear attenuation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fear-related psychiatric disorders such as phobias and anxiety are insufficiently treated by current therapies. Psychedelics targeting 5-HT₂A receptors show promise in modulating fear circuits, but their specific neurobiological substrates remain unclear. This study investigates the effects of 4-acetoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (4-AcO-DMT), a psychedelic compound, on innate fear responses and elucidates its underlying cortical microcircuits, focusing on predator odour-evoked 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in rats. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Using an optimized paradig

The role of cerebellar FOXP1 in the development of motor and communicative behaviors in mice.

The gene FOXP2 is well established for a role in human speech and language; far less is known about FOXP1. However, this related gene has also been implicated in human language development as well as disorders associated with features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FOXP1 protein expression has also recently been identified in the cerebellum-a neural structure previously shown to express FOXP2 protein. The current study sought to elucidate the behavioral implications of a conditional knock-out of Foxp1 using an En1-Cre driver, which is active in the entirety of the cerebellum and a subset o

Auditory-vocal coupling in the naked mole-rat, a mammal with poor auditory thresholds.

Naked mole-rats are extremely social and extremely vocal rodents, displaying a wide range of functionally distinct call types and vocalizing almost continuously. Their vocalizations are low frequency, and a behavioral audiogram has shown that naked mole-rats, like other subterranean mammals, hear only low frequencies. Hence, the frequency range of their hearing and vocalizations appears to be well matched. However, even at low frequencies, naked mole-rats show very poor auditory thresholds, suggesting vocal communication may be effective only over short distances. However, in a tunnel environm

Situational and Age-Dependent Decision Making during Life Threatening Distress in Myotis macrodactylus.

Echolocation and audiovocal communication have been studied extensively in bats. The manner in which these abilities are incorporated within escape behaviors during life-threatening distress is largely unknown. Here we tested the hypothesis that behavioral response profiles expressed during distress are relatively stereotypic given their evolutionary adaptations to avoid predators. We subjected juvenile and adult big-footed myotis (Myotis macrodactylus) to a sequence of three types of life threatening distress: 1) trapping them in a mist-net (environmental threat), 2) approaching them when tra

Subglottal pressure, tracheal airflow, and intrinsic laryngeal muscle activity during rat ultrasound vocalization.

Vocal production requires complex planning and coordination of respiratory, laryngeal, and vocal tract movements, which are incompletely understood in most mammals. Rats produce a variety of whistles in the ultrasonic range that are of communicative relevance and of importance as a model system, but the sources of acoustic variability were mostly unknown. The goal was to identify sources of fundamental frequency variability. Subglottal pressure, tracheal airflow, and electromyographic (EMG) data from two intrinsic laryngeal muscles were measured during 22-kHz and 50-kHz call production in awak

Novel model to assess laryngeal function, innervation, and reinnervation.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal paralysis remains an unsolved problem, and the behavior of the laryngeal muscles following injury to the native innervation appears to be a function of denervation and reinnervation. The aim of the present study was to develop a reliable, accurate, and multifaceted animal model for study of laryngeal function, innervation, and reinnervation. METHODS: A spontaneous-breathing anesthesia technique, suspension laryngoscopy, endoscopic evaluation of the rat larynx, and transoral injection of a retrograde neuronal tracer, hydroxystilbamidine (FluoroGold), were developed. Lesions of an avian basal ganglia circuit prevent context-dependent changes to song variability.

Trial-by-trial variability is important in feedback-based motor learning. Variation in motor output enables evaluation mechanisms to differentially reinforce patterns of motor activity that produce desired behaviors. Here, we studied neural substrates of variability in the performance of adult birdsong, a complex, learned motor skill used for courtship. Song performance is more variable when male birds sing alone (undirected) than when they sing to females (directed). We test the role of the anterior forebrain pathway (AFP), an avian basal ganglia-forebrain circuit, in this socially driven mod

Bilateral LMAN lesions cancel differences in HVC neuronal recruitment induced by unilateral syringeal denervation. Lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum.

Twenty-six-day-old male zebra finches received (1) unilateral section of their tracheosyringeal nerve, (2) bilateral lesions of the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (LMAN), and (3) both operations. All birds were kept with an adult, singing male as a tutor until day 65. Tracheo-syringeal nerve-cut birds were able to imitate this model, but LMAN-lesioned birds were not. Bromodeoxyuridine, a marker of cell division, was injected intramuscularly during post-hatching days 61-65 and all birds were killed at 91 days of age. The number of bromodeoxyuridine+ neurons in the hig

Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on rat pups' ability to elicit retrieval behavior from dams.

Research on fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) has historically held that postnatal deficits result directly from prenatal alcohol exposure. Such exposure may alter infant behavior, and this in turn may affect maternal responsiveness and consequently increase the infant's risk for postnatal deficits. This study examined the effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on postnatal blood ethanol concentrations, pup development, and the ability of pups to elicit retrieval behaviors from the dam. Dams given access to a 15% ethanol solution throughout gestation and lactation showed blood ethanol concentrations o

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid reduces synaptic δ-catenin levels and disrupts ultrasonic vocalization in neonates.

Valproic acid (VPA) is an effective and commonly prescribed drug for epilepsy and bipolar disorder. However, children born from mothers treated with VPA during pregnancy exhibit an increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although VPA may impair brain development at the cellular level, the mechanism of VPA-induced ASD has not been completely addressed. A previous study has found that VPA treatment strongly reduces δ-catenin mRNA levels in cultured human neurons. δ-catenin is important for the control of glutamatergic synapses and is strongly associated with ASD. VPA inhibits dend

Minimally Invasive Murine Laryngoscopy for Close-Up Imaging of Laryngeal Motion during Breathing and Swallowing.

The larynx is an essential organ in mammals with three primary functions - breathing, swallowing, and vocalizing. A wide range of disorders are known to impair laryngeal function, which results in difficulty breathing (dyspnea), swallowing impairment (dysphagia), and/or voice impairment (dysphonia). Dysphagia, in particular, can lead to aspiration pneumonia and associated morbidity, recurrent hospitalization, and early mortality. Despite these serious consequences, existing treatments for laryngeal dysfunction are largely aimed at surgical and behavioral interventions that unfortunately do not

The cargo protein MAP17 (PDZK1IP1) regulates the immune microenvironment.

Understanding the evolutionary origins of combinatorial communication has motivated studies that analyse the semantic capacities of great ape vocal repertoires. A prominent example is the study by Berthet et al. (2025), which used Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) on a large multidimensional dataset of bonobo calls and concluded that certain call combinations exhibit compositional meaning. We applied the published analytical pipeline to randomized datasets lacking any genuine association between call types and contextual features. Depending on implementation choices, the procedure identif

Pediatric Autoimmune Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections and Tourette's Syndrome in Preclinical Studies.

Accumulating evidence suggests that Tourette's Syndrome (TS) - a multifactorial pediatric disorder characterized by the recurrent exhibition of motor tics and/or vocal utterances - can partly depend on immune dysregulation provoked by early repeated streptococcal infections. The natural and adaptive antibody-mediated reaction to streptococcus has been proposed to potentially turn into a pathological autoimmune response in vulnerable individuals. Specifically, in conditions of increased permeability of the blood brain barrier (BBB), streptococcus-induced antibodies have been proposed to: (i) re

Chronic variable stress prevents amphetamine-elicited 50-kHz calls in rats with low positive affectivity.

The relationship between stress response and positive affective states is thought to be bidirectional: whilst stress can lead to a blunted hedonic response, positive affect reduces the negative effects of stress. We have previously shown that persistently high positive affectivity as measured by 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) is protective against chronic variable stress (CVS). The present study examined the effect of CVS on 50-kHz USVs elicited by amphetamine administration, simultaneously considering the stable inter-individual differences in positive affectivity. Forty juvenile male

Injectable Aorta Tissue Paste for Vocal Fold Medialization: Residence Time, Biocompatibility, and Comparison to Predicates in a Guinea Pig Subdermal Model.

OBJECTIVES: Aortic homografts integrate well with laryngeal tissue when used in reconstructive surgery. It was hypothesized that a paste of aortic homograft, rich in slow-to-degrade elastin, would compare favorably in residence time and biocompatibility to predicate materials used for vocal fold injection-medialization. METHODS: An injectable aorta paste (AP) was made by pulverizing aortic homografts at -196°C (cryomilling). To assess residence time and biocompatibility, 0.3 cc was injected subdermally in guinea pigs (n = 3 per 2-, 4-, 8-, 16-, 24-week time points) followed by histological an

Amphetamine-induced appetitive 50-kHz calls in rats: a marker of affect in mania?

RATIONALE: Animal models aimed to mimic mania have in common the lack of genuine affective parameters. Although rodent amphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion is a frequently used behavioral model of mania, locomotor activity is a rather unspecific target for developing new pharmacological therapies, and does not necessarily constitute a cardinal symptom in bipolar disorder (BD). Hence, alternative behavioral markers sensitive to stimulants are required. OBJECTIVES: Since D-amphetamine induces appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) in rats, we asked whether established or potential anti
