HLA-A, -B, -DRB1 allele and haplotype frequencies and comparison with blood group antigens in dialysis patients in the East Anatolia region of Turkey.

AIM: The first aim of that study was to investigate HLA class I and class II allele and haplotype frequencies in renal dialysis patients who live in East Anatolia in Turkey. Our second aim was to investigate whether there was a relationship between ABO and D blood group antigens and HLA alleles and haplotypes for the study group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HLA class I and II polymorphisms in 408 renal dialysis patients were studied using sequence-specific primers (SSP) and sequence-specific oligonucleotides (SSO). Blood group antigens were detected by agglutination methods on microplates. RESULT

Isoagglutinin adsorption in ABO-incompatible transplantation.

As the demand for kidney transplantation is constantly growing methods to expand the donor pool have become increasingly important. ABO-incompatibility has hitherto been regarded as an absolute contraindication to living donor donation. However, as ABO-incompatibility has accounted for the majority of living donor exclusions, efforts have been made to overcome this immunologic barrier. Successful desensitization protocols thus far, have combined plasmapheresis for antibody removal with splenectomy to reduce the antibody producing B-cell pool, in addition to quadruple immunosuppression. Providing ABO-identical platelets and cryoprecipitate to (almost) all patients: approach, logistics, and associated decreases in transfusion reaction and red blood cell alloimmunization incidence.

BACKGROUND: There are multiple benefits to transfusing only ABO-identical blood components. Historically our institution routinely transfused ABO-nonidentical platelets (PLTs) and cryoprecipitate to surgical patients. In April 2005, we implemented a policy of transfusing only ABO-identical components whenever feasible, regardless of outdating or logistic considerations. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Technical staff closely monitored product usage and adjusted blood center orders based on recent utilization and planned transfusions. When unable to provide ABO-identical PLTs, ABO-compatible PLTs we

Matching of histocompatibility (HL-A) antigens for platelet transfusion.

The average in vivo platelet survival was measured by both per cent recoveries (%R) and half-lives (t 1/2) of 51Cr-labeled platelets in 69 transfusions given to 43 thrombacytopenic patients. The results demonstrated that (1) increase in the number of HL-A incompatibilities in the platelet donor was significantly associated with decreased %R and t 1/2 of the infused platelets; (2) survival of transfused platelets from HL-A-matched single donors was consistently superior to those pooled from several grossly mismatched donors; and (3) survival of platelets infused when patients had circulating ly

The prognostic value of AQP1 in hyperbilirubinemia related to ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn.

BACKGROUND: ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO-HDN) is a major cause of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates, often inducing significant elevation of serum bilirubin levels shortly after birth. PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) for hyperbilirubinemia in ABO-HDN as reflected by the duration of phototherapy, a key clinical indicator of disease severity and treatment response. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, enrolling 168 neonates with ABO-HDN-related hyperbilirubinemia. Serum AQP1 expression was detected by RT-qPCR, and neonate

Identification and structural analysis of a novel FUT1 c.789C>A variant and previously reported para-Bombay alleles using an α2FucT1 structural model.

BACKGROUND: FUT1 encodes galactoside alpha-(1,2)-fucosyltransferase 1 (α2FucT1), which adds the H antigen glycan on red blood cells. In contrast, FUT2 encodes galactoside alpha-(1,2)-fucosyltransferase 2 (α2FucT2), which is primarily responsible for adding H antigen in secretions. When FUT1 loss-of-function variants occur in the presence of functional FUT2, RBCs can exhibit on their surface weak H antigen captured from secretions. This is known as the para-Bombay phenotype. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was conducted on a sample from a Hispanic individual exhibiting

ABO blood groups and increased risk for the development of vascular involvement in Behçet's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory endothelial activation is a prominent feature of vascular involvement in Behçet's disease (BD), which is usually accompanied by a thrombotic tendency. Recent studies suggest an association between ABO blood groups and thrombotic vascular disease in those carrying non-O (A, B, and AB) groups. This study aimed to analyse the contribution of ABO blood groups to the vascular involvement in BD. METHODS: In this retrospective study, BD patients with available ABO blood group data and meeting the ISG criteria were included in the study. The presence of vascular involvement,

Relationship between maternal ABO blood groups and pregnancy outcomes: a retrospective cohort study in Dongguan, China.

The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between maternal ABO blood groups and pregnancy outcomes. A total of 29,658 couples in Dongguan were selected as the research subjects. We obtained data on ABO blood groups and pregnancy outcomes and explored the relationship between them through log binomial regression and survival analysis. Compared to mothers with type B blood, the RR of foetal stillbirth in mothers with type A blood was 2.87 (95% CI: 1.70, 4.85), and compared to mothers with type O blood, the RR was 1.72 (95% CI: 1.16, 2.55). Compared with foetuses of other three bloo

In vitro selection for adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes to ABO antigens does not affect PfEMP1 and RIFIN expression.

Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe form of malaria in humans. The adhesion of the infected erythrocytes (IEs) to endothelial receptors (sequestration) and to uninfected erythrocytes (rosetting) are considered major elements in the pathogenesis of the disease. Both sequestration and rosetting appear to involve particular members of several IE variant surface antigens (VSAs) as ligands, interacting with multiple vascular host receptors, including the ABO blood group antigens. In this study, we subjected genetically distinct P. falciparum parasites to in vitro selection for increased IE

Association of Blood Type With Postsurgical Mucosal Bleeding in Pediatric Patients Undergoing Tonsillectomy With or Without Adenoidectomy.

IMPORTANCE: Blood type (BT) O has been identified as a risk factor for bleeding complications, while non-O BTs may increase risk for thromboembolic events. Limited data are available in children undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether BT O is associated with hemorrhage after tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort study of patients younger than 22 years who underwent tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy at a single institution between January 1, 2008, and August 7, 2017. Effects of IgG and IgM autoantibodies on non-infected erythrocytes is related to ABO blood group in Plasmodium vivax malaria and is associated with anemia.

Autoantibodies play an important role in the destruction of non-infected red blood cells (nRBCs) during malaria. However, the relationship between this clearance and ABO blood groups is yet to be fully enlightened, especially for Plasmodium vivax infections. Here we show that anti-RBC IgG and IgM are increased in anemic patients with acute vivax malaria. Furthermore, both antibodies are able to decrease the deformability of nRBCs, but only IgG can induce in vitro erythrophagocytosis. Such effects are enhanced in type O erythrocytes, suggesting that individuals from this blood group infected wi

Molecular characterization and multidisciplinary management of Gerbich hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Gerbich (Ge) antigens are high frequency red cell antigens expressed on glycophorin C (GYPC) and glycophorin D. Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) due to Gerbich antibody is rare and presents a clinical challenge, as Gerbich negative blood is scarce. We report a case of HDFN due to maternal Ge3 negative phenotype and anti-Ge3 alloimmunization, successfully managed by transfusion of maternal blood. Molecular testing revealed that the mother has homozygous deletion of exon 3 of GYPC, the father is homozygous wildtype for GYPC, and the infant is obligate heterozygote expressing Ge3

A 46-year-old man was diagnosed with acute myelomonocytic leukemia involving inv(16)(p13.1q22) in August 2007. He received a human leukocyte antigen-identical, ABO major-mismatched (donor: A, recipient: O) bone marrow transplantation from an unrelated donor in June 2009. Cyclosporin A (CsA) and short-course methotrexate were used for graft versus host disease prophylaxis. Although granulocyte and platelet engraftment were achieved, the patient exhibited persistent anemia and was dependent on red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. Bone marrow aspiration on day 63 revealed the near absence of erythr

Successful three-way kidney paired donation with compatible pairs to increase donor pool.

Despite heightened international interest in performing living donor kidney paired donation (KPD) transplantation after the publication of a research protocol by Ross and colleagues in 1997, only a few hundred have been performed worldwide. The major obstacle is that many individuals in end-stage renal disease are of blood type O and can only receive an organ from a donor of blood type O, whereas blood type O donors are "universal donors" and will be able to donate directly with an intended recipient of any blood type unless there is a positive crossmatch. To overcome this, patients with compa

[Para-Bombay phenotype caused by combined heterozygote of two bases deletion on fut1 alleles].

This study was purposed to investigate the molecular basis of a para-Bombay phenotype for screening and identification of rare blood group. ABO and H phenotypes of the proband were identified by serological techniques. The exon 6 to exon 7 of ABO gene and full coding region of α-1,2-fucosyltransferase (fut1) gene of the proband were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing of the amplified fragments. The haplotype of compound heterozygote of fut1 was also identified by cloning sequencing. The results indicated that a rare para-Bombay phenotype was confirmed by serological te
