The distribution of myelinated and non-myelinated nerve fibers in the parathyroid glands of the dog was studied by light and electron microscopy. The mixed fasciculi with myelinated nerve fibers (average diameter 7.0 micron) and unmyelinated fibers were present independent of the adventitia of the arterioles. The mixed fasciculi were accompanied by large amounts of collagen fibrils running in the direction of the nerve fibers. The fasciculi were surrounded by a complete sleeve composed of a perineural epithelial sheath which a basal lamina on both sides. The possibility that these fibers might

Examination of the pupil offers an objective evaluation of visual function as well as the vegetative pathways to the eye. Essential information is gathered within a short time. This makes pupillary inspection a valuable part of the routine ophthalmological, neurological and general medical examinations. Due to the proximity of pupillary pathways to various anatomic structures, pupillary dysfunction can be caused by a variety of disorders, some of which may be life threatening. The ophthalmologist plays a key role in detecting pupillary disorders and in directing further investigations. Therefo

Objective.H-reflex targeted neuroplasticity (HrTNP) protocols comprise a promising rehabilitation approach to improve motor function after brain or spinal injury. In this operant conditioning protocol, concurrent measurement of cortical responses, such as somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), would be useful for examining supraspinal involvement and neuroplasticity mechanisms. To date, this potential has not been exploited. However, the stimulation parameters used in the HrTNP protocol deviate from the classically recommended settings for SEP measurements. Most notably, it demands a much lon

The ablation of renal nerves, by destroying both the sympathetic and afferent fibers, has been shown to be effective in lowering blood pressure in resistant hypertensive patients. However, experimental studies have reported that the removal of sympathetic fibers may lead to side effects, such as the impairment of compensatory cardiorenal responses during a hemodynamic challenge. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the selective removal of renal afferent fibers on arterial hypertension, renal sympathetic nerve activity, and renal changes in a model of renovascular hypertension. Recent studies in animal models have reported that some afferent fibers innervating the esophagus express the cold receptor TRPM8. In the somatosensory system the stimulation of TRPM8 leads to cold sensations and in certain circumstances alleviates pain. It is therefore hypothesized in this paper that the esophageal infusion of the TRPM8 activator menthol evokes cold sensations from the esophagus and alleviates heartburn in humans. The esophageal infusion of menthol (3 mM, 20 min) evoked cold sensations in 11 of 12 healthy subjects. In striking contrast, the esophageal infusion of menthol evok

Complex sensations accompany the activation of sensory neurons within the respiratory system, yet little is known about the organization of sensory pathways in the brain that mediate these sensations. In the present study, we employ anterograde viral neuroanatomical tract tracing with isogenic self-reporting recombinants of HSV-1 strain H129 to map the higher brain regions in receipt of vagal sensory neurons arising from the trachea versus the lungs, and single-cell PCR to characterize the phenotype of sensory neurons arising from these two divisions of the respiratory tree. The results sugges

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review how common cancers such as breast, lung, and prostate cancers drive significant and frequently life-altering pain when the cells metastasize to bones.
RECENT FINDINGS: Similar to cancer, the factors that drive bone cancer pain evolve and change with disease progression. Bone cancer pain has both a nociceptive and neuropathic component. The nociceptive component is driven by the release of algogenic substances by tumor and their associated stromal cells, acidosis caused by bone-destroying osteoclasts, and mechanical destabilization and fracture of the bone. The neu

Quadrupeds maintain the dorsal side up body orientation due to the activity of the postural control system driven by limb mechanoreceptors. Binaural galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) causes a lateral body sway toward the anode. Previously, we have shown that this new position is actively stabilized, suggesting that GVS changes a set point in the reflex mechanisms controlling body posture. The aim of the present study was to reveal the underlying neuronal mechanisms. Experiments were performed on decerebrate rabbits. The vertebral column was rigidly fixed, whereas hindlimbs were positioned

The sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in circulatory and metabolic control and has clearly been established as a major contributor to the development of hypertension, as elevated sympathetic nerve activity initiates and sustains the elevation of blood pressure. Increased sympathetic outflow to the heart, resulting in increased cardiac output and neurally mediated vasoconstriction of peripheral blood vessels, is an obvious example of a neural pathophysiologic pathway leading to elevated blood pressure. The consequences of increased sympathetic outflow to the kidneys, perhaps mo

OBJECT: The authors' goal was to observe histopathological changes in the trigeminal nerve after Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) in rhesus monkeys, and to investigate the radiobiological mechanism of GKS for primary trigeminal neuralgia. The nerve length-dosage effect of irradiation is also discussed.
METHODS: One of 5 rhesus monkeys randomly served as a control, and the other 4 monkeys were randomly administered a target radiation dose of 60, 70, 80, or 100 Gy (a different dose in each animal). The size of the collimator was 4 mm, and the target point was the trigeminal nerve root. In each experim

The chemosensory glomus cells of the carotid body (CB) detect changes in O2 tension. Carotid sinus nerve fibers, which originate from peripheral sensory neurons located within the petrosal ganglion, innervate the CB. Release of transmitter from glomus cells activates the sensory afferent fibers to transmit information to the nucleus of the solitary tract in the brainstem. The ion channels expressed within the sensory nerve terminals play an essential role in the ability of the terminal to initiate action potentials in response to transmitter-evoked depolarization. However, with a few exception

Recent work has demonstrated substantial wiring and functional stereotypy in the fly olfactory system. In this issue of Neuron, Murthy et al. demonstrate that in the mushroom body, a site of olfactory associative learning, this initial peripheral stereotypy gives way to functionally nonstereotyped circuits.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the course of sensory fibers through the supratentorial brain with diffusion-tensor-based tractography.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was approved by the institutional review board. Informed consent was obtained. Seven healthy volunteers (five men, two women; age range, 20-55 years) underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging. Diffusion-tensor images with isotropic voxels (2 x 2 x 2 mm) were obtained by using a single-shot echo-planar imaging technique, with a motion-probing gradient in 15 orientations, a b value of 1000 sec/mm(2), and nine signals acquir

Olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) form synapses with local interneurons and second-order projection neurons to form stereotyped olfactory glomeruli. This primary olfactory circuit is hard-wired through the action of genetic cues. We asked whether individual glomeruli have the capacity for stimulus-evoked plasticity by focusing on the carbon dioxide (CO2) circuit in Drosophila. Specialized OSNs detect this gas and relay the information to a dedicated circuit in the brain. Prolonged exposure to CO2 induced a reversible volume increase in the CO2-specific glomerulus. OSNs showed neither altered mo

Intestinal electric stimulation (IES) has been shown to produce an inhibitory effect on gastric motility and secretion. The possible central mechanism of this entero-gastric inhibitory effect induced by IES is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of various IES on the activity of neurons in nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS). We examined the extracellular neuronal activity in NTS of the medulla in pentobarbital anesthetized, paralyzed, ventilated male adult rats. The aortic depressor, superior laryngeal, and carotid sinus nerves were crushed or sectioned bilaterally to

Endometriosis is a disease defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus. Severe pelvic pain is often associated with endometriosis, and this pain can be diminished with therapies that suppress estrogen production. Many women with endometriosis also suffer from other chronic pain conditions. Recent studies suggest that mechanisms underlying these pains and sensitivity to estrogen involve the growth into the ectopic endometrial tissue of a nerve supply, which could have a varied and widespread influence on the activity of neurons throughout the central nervous system.

In the early stages of vestibular compensation (VC) (the behavioural recovery that follows unilateral vestibular deafferentation), neurons in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) on the lesioned side develop a sustained up-regulation of their intrinsic excitability. This plasticity is dependent on the activation of glucocorticoid receptors, which presumably occurs during the acute stress response that accompanies the vestibular deafferentation symptoms. Recent studies have established that the access of glucocorticoids to their intracellular receptors in brain is potently modulated by 11beta-hy

INTRODUCTION: The term pseudochoreoathetosis is used to refer to the choreoathetoid movements that are produced by alterations in the proprioceptive sensitivity due to damage it has suffered at some point along its course. Proprioceptive sensitivity is considered to go up as far as the cortex along the posterior cords of the spinal cord, which means that if they are injured in the cervical region there should be a sensory deficit in both the upper (UL) and lower limbs (LL).
CASE REPORTS: We describe five cases of transverse myelitis with localised cervical injury that selectively and mainly a

Despite conflicting clinical and experimental evidence, textbook description of somatic sensations continues to follow a rigid dichotomy based on the concept that pain sensation is transmitted cephalad primarily through anterolateral pathways, while touch is mediated through the dorsal column pathway. This study provides an example of the dynamic rerouting in the transmission of the nociceptive signals following injuries to the peripheral and central processes of sensory neurons. In two rat models for mononeuropathy, the chronic constriction injury model [Bennett, G.J., Xie, Y.K., Pain 33 (198
