A one-pot and efficient method for the synthesis of pyrazolo[4',3':5,6]pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-dione derivatives by condensation reaction of barbituric acids, 1H-pyrazol-5-amines and aldehydes under solvent-free conditions is reported. These products were evaluated in vitro for their antibacterial activities.

Lithiation/stannylation of optically active N-propargyloxazolidinones produced optically active alpha-oxazolidinonylallenylstannanes. Reaction of these with aldehydes in the presence of BF(3).OEt(2) produced beta-hydroxypropargylamines with high syn diastereoselectivity and ee. These were converted to gamma-hydroxy-beta-amino acids by oxidative cleavage of the alkyne.

Ethylene glycol is an industrially important diol in many manufacturing processes and a building block of polymers, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate). In this study, we found that a mycolic acid-containing bacterium Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 can grow with ethylene glycol as a sole source of carbon and energy. Propylene carbonate is shown to be an environmentally friendly and sustainable replacement for dichloromethane and acetonitrile in proline-catalysed a-hydrazinations of aldehydes and ketones. Enantioselectivities comparable to those obtained in conventional solvents or ionic liquids can be obtained, even when using a lower catalyst loading.

An efficient three-component, one-pot synthesis of β-amino carbonyl compounds from aromatic ketones, aromatic aldehydes, and aromatic amines using tin tetrachloride at room temperature in ethanol is described.
