Correlates of military tank simulator sickness.

A military tank driving simulator is currently widely used as a training aid for tank drivers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between possible correlates of simulator sickness and the occurrence of sickness and performance test results among simulator drivers. The average number of motion sickness-like symptoms reported after driving the simulator among subjects with a history of susceptibility to motion sickness was 3.4, significantly higher than the average of 1.6 reported among subjects who did not report previous susceptibility to motion sickness (p < 0.05).

Autonomic physiological data associated with simulator discomfort.

A physiological monitoring capability was developed for the Army's Crew Station Research and Development Facility (CSRDF), a research simulator for advanced rotorcraft. Preliminary physiological data are reported from studies of simulator-induced sickness. Our objective was to demonstrate sensitivity of physiological measures relative to self-reports of simulator sickness severity. The data suggested that heart period, tachygastria, and skin conductance level were more sensitive to simulator sickness than were vagal tone and normal myoelectrical gastric activity.

Chinese hyper-susceptibility to vection-induced motion sickness.

Little is known about the factors that control individual differences in susceptible to motion sickness. A serendipitous observation in our laboratory that most Chinese subjects become motion sick prompted this study. We used a rotating optokinetic drum to provoke motion sickness and compared gastric responses and symptom reports of Chinese, European-American, and African-American subjects. There was no difference in the responses of European-American and African-American subjects; however, Chinese subjects showed significantly greater disturbances in gastric activity and reported significantl

Factors influencing success or failure in the AH-64 course.

A greater percentage of qualified student pilots fail the AH-64 (Apache) transition than any other advanced aircraft transition in the Army. We studied 140 consecutive students presenting for training in an effort to identify factors which might predict success or failure in the AH-64 course. Questionnaires were used to elicit demographic, anxiety level, and motion sickness history information prior to beginning Apache flight training. Motion sickness symptoms (MSS) during the enclosed cockpit, or "bag," phase of training were quantified using pre- and postbag flight symptom questionnaires. Pe

Effects of scopolamine on autonomic profiles underlying motion sickness susceptibility.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of scopolamine on the physiological patterns occurring prior to and during motion sickness stimulation. In addition, the use of physiological profiles in the prediction of motion sickness was evaluated. Sixty subjects ingested either 0.6 mg scopolamine, 2.5 mg methscopolamine, or a placebo. Heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (an index of vagal tone), and electrogastrograms were measured prior to and during the exposure to a rotating optokinetic drum. Compared to the other groups, the scopolamine group reported fewer motion sicknes

The effects of wearing protective chemical warfare combat clothing on human performance.

U.S. Department of Defense studies to measure performance decrements associated with wearing chemical warfare (CW) protective combat clothing indicate that heat stress seriously degrades human performance. Even when heat stress is not a significant factor, performance of many combat, combat support, and combat service support tasks is degraded. In most field studies, many crews of combat units became operationally ineffective due to voluntary withdrawal of individual crewmembers. Many combined arms, field studies, and laboratory studies indicate that when CW-protective combat clothing is worn

Degeneration of cervical intervertebral disks in fighter pilots frequently exposed to high +Gz forces.

This study investigated the occurrence and the degree of cervical disk degeneration among senior fighter pilots frequently exposed to high +Gz forces, compared with nonexposed controls matched for age and sex. A resistive magnetic resonance (MR) scanner operating at 0.1 T was used to image the cervical intervertebral disks. Sagittal MR images were obtained and disk degeneration was graded 0-6. Both the occurrence and the median degree of disk degeneration were greater among the pilots than among the controls. The greatest difference in the occurrence of disk degeneration (grades 1-6), which al

Cases from the aerospace residents' teaching file. Case #48. A student pilot is referred for evaluation of a "head injury with post-traumatic amnesia".

A student pilot is referred for evaluation of a "head injury with post-traumatic amnesia." The case study presents a temporal association of injury and symptoms that were assumed to be related. A differential diagnosis of an amnestic syndrome is presented. Transient global amnesia is discussed as a possible etiology until an EEG revealed an epileptiform abnormality. The aeromedical implications, military and FAA, of the clinical and electrophysiologic findings are discussed.

Phasic skin conductance activity and motion sickness.

Sweating is commonly associated with motion sickness. Previous studies have attempted to relate sweating or the associated electrodermal activity to the degree of motion sickness symptoms. This study was aimed at improving methodology by study of 1) recording site--palmar finger versus forehead; and 2) signal analysis--tonic skin conductance level (SCL) versus phasic skin conductance responses (SCRs). Eleven subjects were exposed to a cross-coupled motion challenge, produced by repeated head movements (16 per minute) during rotation around the Earth vertical axis in which rotational velocity w

Seasickness in totally-enclosed motor-propelled survival craft: remedial measures.

Totally-enclosed motor-propelled survival craft (TEMPSC) are used to evacuate the crews of mobile offshore drilling units in emergencies. The small size and flat bottom of the TEMPSC predispose most occupants to seasickness, even in relatively calm waters. This paper discusses efforts required to improve the well-being of occupants in terms of reducing seasickness, dehydration, hypothermia, anxiety, and the other factors that contribute to loss of comfort and the will to survive. Specific recommendations include the provision of climatic control to regulate temperature, remove odors and provid

Salivary secretion and seasickness susceptibility.

The salivary flow rate and composition of 2 groups of 31 subjects, one group at each extreme of the seasickness susceptibility scale, were compared. No significant differences were found between the two groups in flow rates and electrolyte concentrations of whole resting and stimulated saliva. Amylase activity and rate of secretion in resting saliva were significantly higher in subjects susceptible to seasickness as compared with nonsusceptible subjects. Also, the total protein rate of secretion in resting saliva was significantly higher in the susceptible group. The present findings could be

A comparison of the nauseogenic potential of low-frequency vertical versus horizontal linear oscillation.

The aim of this study was to compare the nauseogenic potential of low-frequency linear motion in the Earth-vertical versus the Earth-horizontal plane, delivered through the same Z-axis of the head and body. Twelve subjects were challenged with linear motion (0.3 Hz, 1.8 ms-2 rms) through the same head and body Z-axis in the Earth-vertical (sitting upright) versus horizontal (lying on the back), while either performing a continuous visual search task or with their eyes closed. Each subject completed the four conditions on a Latin square design with sessions spaced 1 week apart at the same time

The effects of perceived motion on sound-source lateralization.

Lateralization of dichotic click pairs differing in time of onset was studied under conditions of angular acceleration, optokinetic stimulation, and gaze fixation. Data obtained from 20 subjects with normal hearing indicate poorer left-right judgment performance for small time differences, as well as shifts in subjective simultaneity, for all experimental conditions relative to control conditions. In addition, response times increased for the experimental conditions. The results suggest that real or apparent motion may affect an individual's ability to process one of the major cues for sound-s

Effects of microgravity on the interaction of vestibular and optokinetic nystagmus in the vertical plane.

The extent to which the slow phase velocity (SPV) of nystagmus elicited by a vertical optokinetic stimulation with constant velocity could be modulated by sinusoidal angular motion in the vertical plane was investigated under normal gravity condition and during the microgravity period of parabolic flight. In normal gravity, when the angular head motion and the optokinetic stimulation were in the same direction, the peak SPV was slower than the velocity of the optokinetic display. When the head motion and the optokinetic stimulation were in opposite directions, the peak SPV was equal to the vel

beta-Endorphin and arginine vasopressin following stressful sensory stimuli in man.

This experimentation partially defines, for the first time, the response of beta-endorphin (ENDO) in man during tests designed to elicit nausea and motion sickness. These responses are similar to those associated with arginine vasopressin (AVP) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) to the extent that all hormones rise in response to motion sickness (p < 0.003). Repeated exposure diminished motion-induced release of ENDO (p < 0.005) and AVP (p < 0.004) despite a three-fold increase in resistance to motion stimuli. Higher post-stress levels of AVP (p < 0.04) and ACTH (p < 0.02) were correlated with gre

G-endurance during heat stress and balanced pressure breathing.

The effect of heat stress and balanced pressure breathing during G (PBG) on G-endurance was investigated. Ten fighter pilots wearing anti-G-suits with increased bladder coverage were warmed to 38.2 degrees C and exposed to 15-s periods at 4.5 and 7 G in a heated human centrifuge gondola until exhaustion during PBG and normal breathing (NB). During both NB and PBG, the rectal temperature rose to a mean of 38.3 degrees C, and the dehydration was about 1.2 kg. With NB the endurance was a mean of 254 s, while it was 300 s with PBG (n.s.). Oxygen saturation and ratings of perceived exertion were ma

Temperature and humidity within the clothing microenvironment.

The present study investigates clothing microenvironment conditions that may develop during prolonged exposure of workers to a hot environment. Five subjects were exposed to a linear increase in ambient temperature from 20-40 degrees C over a 90-min period, and then remained at 40 degrees C for an additional 90 min. During the exposures, subjects were clad in four types of helicopter personnel suits (Gore-Tex, Cotton Ventile, Nomex/Insulite, and Nomex/Neoprene), incorporating both dry-suit and wet-suit designs. Continuous assessment was made of skin temperature, rectal temperature, and of micr

Thermal convergence fails to predict heat tolerance limits.

Work under very hot, humid conditions may raise skin temperature (Tsk) to meet rectal temperature (Tre). This convergence has been said to produce imminent collapse and therefore to predict human tolerance limits for work in heat, especially for those wearing impermeable protective clothing. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of subjects to continue work beyond the time when they experienced convergence. A total of 15 healthy adult volunteers participated in two protocols: A) Each of nine subjects performed four experiments wearing impermeable clothing and walking on an incli
