Selective computed tomography-guided perisciatic injection as a diagnostic tool in multiple hereditary exostoses.

Multiple osteochondromas, also known as multiple hereditary exostoses, is an autosomal-dominant disease. Multiple osteochondromas are characterized by the development of cartilage-capped bony tumors, known as osteochondromas. Osteochondromas can cause limb deformities, limb-length discrepancies, angular deformations, bursitis, and impingement of adjacent tendons or neurovascular structures. They have also been reported as a cause of sciatic pain. Sometimes, more than 1 location of neural compression exists, thereby presenting a difficult diagnostic challenge for treating physicians. This artic…

Reverse lateral supramalleolar adipofascial flap and skin grafting for one-stage soft tissue reconstruction of foot and ankle joint.

The aim of this report is to present the clinical result and efficacy of reverse lateral supramalleolar adipofascial flap and skin grafting for one stage soft tissue reconstruction of the foot and ankle joints. Reconstruction using a reverse lateral supramalleolar adipofascial flap and skin grafting was performed in eight cases between January 2005 and March 2009. All the subjects were male with a mean age of 53 years. The mean follow-up period was 20 months. The reasons for soft tissue defects were diabetic foot, infected bursitis, open injuries of the foot, and chronic osteomyelitis. The mea…

Crystal-associated synovitis- ultrasonographic feature and clinical correlation.

The aim of this paper is to describe the ultrasonographic findings in rheumatologic pathology due to crystal deposition. There are four main types of crystals involved: monosodium urate, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate, basic calcium phosphate (hydroxyapatite), and calcium oxalate. In gout the joint fluid is anechoic only at the first gouty attack; afterwards the synovium begins to proliferate. Double contuour sign, a focal or diffuse enhancement of the superficial margin of the articular cartilage is a specific finding. Bursitis has chronic features from the beginning. The ultrasonographic as…

Ultrasound-guided therapeutic procedures in the musculoskeletal system.

Ultrasound allows the exploration of most of the musculoskeletal system, including lytic bone lesions. Its flexibility, availability, and low cost make it the best tool to guide interventional therapeutic procedures in any musculoskeletal system lesion visible on ultrasound. These techniques include drainages of abscesses, bursitis, hematomas or muscular strains, treatment of cystic lesions (ganglions, Baker's cysts), arthrocentesis, injection of substances in joints and soft tissues, and aspiration of calcific tendinitis. Although the puncture of joints for arthrocentesis and injection of sub…

Cellular inflammatory response to persistent localized Staphylococcus aureus infection: phenotypical and functional characterization of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN).

Persistent, localized Staphylococcus aureus infections, refractory to antibiotic treatment, can result in massive tissue destruction and surgical intervention is often the only therapeutic option. In that context, we investigated patients with S. aureus-induced infection at various sites, apparent as either olecranon bursitis, empyema of the knee joint or soft tissue abscess formation. As expected, a prominent leucocyte infiltrate was found, consisting predominantly of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) (up to 75%) and to a lesser extent of T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells. In line…

The subacromial bur … supraspinatus tendon, or both are irritated when diagnosing shoulder pain. An accurate diagnosis of bursitis is essential for appropriate treatment planning and optimizing patient outcomes. Endoscopic Calcaneoplasty in Haglund Disease: Surgical Technique, Clinical and Subjective Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: During the last decade, arthroscopic procedures have been replacing open techniques in Haglund disease treatment because of their considerable advantages. Endoscopic calcaneoplasty is a technique that allows resection of posterosuperior calcaneal exostosis and retrocalcaneal bursitis. The objective of this article was to describe this technique and report its clinical and subjective outcome. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of consecutive patients undergoing endoscopic Haglund resection surgery between July 2014 and March 2020 at a single academic institution. All pati…

Diagnostic Comparison of Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Detecting Rotator Cuff Tears: A Study Conducted in the Population of Vijayapura.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the shoulder and restricted range of motion often lead to decreased work productivity, increased use of medical resources, and impaired quality of life. The most frequent cause of shoulder discomfort and dysfunction is a disease related to the rotator cuff, such as bursitis, degenerative tears, and calcific tendinosis. This study evaluates ultrasonography's diagnostic efficacy in relation to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODOLOGY: Prospective research was conducted at a hospital to compare MRI and ultrasonography for shoulder cases involving rotator cuff injurie…

Shoulder ultrasound: current concepts and future perspectives.

Ultrasonography is an established and effective imaging technique that can be used to evaluate articular and periarticular structures around the shoulder. It has been shown to be useful in a wide range of rotator cuff diseases (e.g. tendon tears, rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy and bursitis) as well as non-rotator cuff abnormalities (instability, synovial joint diseases and nerve entrapment syndrome). A scanning protocol is highly recommended to reduce the rate of operators' errors by following a standardized scheme including a list of main structures. Shoulder ultrasound has several advant…
