Lack of association between ectoparasite intensities and rabies virus neutralizing antibody seroprevalence in wild big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), Fort Collins, Colorado.

Recently, bat ectoparasites have been demonstrated to harbor pathogens of potential importance to humans. We evaluated antirabies antibody seroprevalence and the presence of ectoparasites in big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) sampled in 2002 and 2003 in Colorado to investigate if an association existed between ectoparasite intensity and exposure to rabies virus (RV). We used logistic regression and Akaike's Information Criteria adjusted for sample size (AICc) in a post-hoc analysis to investigate the relative importance of three ectoparasite species, as well as bat colony size, year sampled, ag

Rabies human diploid cell vaccine elicits cross-neutralising and cross-protecting immune responses against European and Australian bat lyssaviruses.

The ability of antibodies elicited against the rabies human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) to neutralise European bat Lyssaviruses (EBLV types-1 and -2), Australian bat Lyssavirus and classical rabies virus (RABV) has been evaluated using modified fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (mFAVN) assays. Ninety-six percent (48 of 50) of the human post-vaccinated sera tested cross-neutralised these viruses (>or=0.5 IU/ml). Cross-protection experiments using inbred mice (RIII, k/k haplotype) were also assessed. Mice were given HDCV (twice by the intra-peritoneal route) and challenged (intra-cranial

Sound-evoked efferent effects on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat.

The influence of the crossed medial efferent system on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat was tested by measuring delayed evoked otoacoustic emissions (DEOAEs), cochlear microphonics, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions. Contralaterally delivered sinusoids, broadband noise and bat echolocation calls were used for acoustic stimulation of the efferent system. With all four measures we found a level-dependent suppression under stimulation with both broadband noise and echolocation calls. In addition, the sharply tuned cochlear resona

Cobalamin neuropathy. Is S-adenosylhomocysteine toxicity a factor?

Cobalamin neuropathy was produced in cape fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) by a cobalamin-free diet combined with intermittent exposure to nitrous oxide, which inactivates cobalamin. There were no significant differences in S-adenosylmethionine/S-adenosylhomocysteine ratios in the central nervous system of cobalamin-deficient and cobalamin-replete bats. Taken with other data there are no grounds of support for a hypothesis that cobalamin neuropathy is the result of impaired methylation, however produced.

[Oral vaccination in the control of feral rabies].

The authors briefly report the results of laboratory and epidemiological investigations on living modified and inactivated antirabies vaccines, started in 1975 and carried out in collaboration with public health authorities and scientific institutions. The antirabies oral vaccination of foxes, using a live and modified vaccine (SADB19 Tüb.) began in Brescia province (Val Camonica) in 1984 and was extended in 1985 to Bolzano and Trento provinces. Since July 1986 no more cases of rabies have been observed in Italy. The problems related to the distribution in the territory of live and modified an

Metagenomic screening of antimicrobial peptide candidates and isolation of two active peptides from bat gut bacteria.

Bacterial antibiotic resistance has intensified the need to identify new antimicrobial molecules from underexplored microbial systems. Wild mammalian gut microbiota may harbor antimicrobial peptide (AMP) candidates and candidate bacteriocins, but these systems remain poorly investigated as sources for antimicrobial discovery. Here, we used parallel metagenomic and culture-dependent approaches to explore candidate AMP sequences and candidate bacteriocins from the gut bacteria of the Asian particolored bat Vespertilio sinensis. Machine-learning screening of 553,401 short non-redundant ORF protei

Paralytic rabies outbreak mimicking guillain-Barré syndrome in French Amazonia.

BACKGROUND: In the Amazonian region, vampire bats are the primary reservoir of rabies virus, causing sporadic and lethal human rabies cases that often remain unnoticed. Managing human cases in this region is challenging and further complicated by atypical clinical forms and the potential exposure to various toxic compounds, particularly among gold miners. METHODS: We carried out clinical, electrical, biological and histological analysis of concurrent cases of progressive motor neuronopathy and fatal encephalitis in a context of regular exposure to bat bites of gold miners living in a small an

Diet-driven diversity of antibiotic resistance genes in wild bats: implications for public health.

Wild bats may serve as reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, potentially contributing to antibiotic resistance and pathogen transmission. However, current assessments of bats' antibiotic resistance potential are limited to culture-dependent bacterial snapshots. In this study, we present metagenomic evidence supporting a strong association between diet, gut microbiota, and the resistome, highlighting bats as significant vectors for ARG propagation. We characterized gut microbiota, ARGs, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in bats with five distinct

Characterization of a MERS-related betacoronavirus in Danish brown long-eared bats (Plecotus auritus).

BACKGROUND: Bats are recognized as natural reservoir hosts for numerous viruses and are believed to be the evolutionary origin of alpha- and beta-coronaviruses (CoVs), such as SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and possibly MERS-CoV. MERS-related beta-CoVs have been identified in bat species from Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. In this study, we describe the first detection and characterization of a MERS-related beta-CoV in Danish brown long-eared bats (Plecotus auritus). METHODS: Fecal samples collected through a national surveillance program were screened using pan-CoV RT-qPCRs. Positive samples unde

Auditory sensitivity in the great evening bat (Ia io): Insights from auditory brainstem response.

The great evening bat (Ia io), a large frequency-modulating (FM) bat species in the Vespertilionidae family, may exhibit unique auditory adaptations that support its bird-predatory behavior. In this study, we employed auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements to evaluate the auditory sensitivity of five adult male I. io across a 2 to 80 kHz frequency range. The results showed the most sensitive auditory threshold appears at 24-28 kHz (range 24 to 32 kHz for individual bats), aligning with the species' peak frequency of echolocation calls, enhancing large prey detection and localization. A

Toxoplasma gondii in urban and rural bats from São Paulo state, Brazil.

The aim of this study was to detect Toxoplasma gondii in organs of urban and rural bats from 17 cities in São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 203 bats, including insectivorous, frugivorous and hematophagous species, were collected from urban and rural areas between 2020 and 2022. DNA was extracted from heart and kidney samples and analyzed using real-time PCR as a screening method, followed by conventional PCR to obtain a viable product for genetic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. In total, 14.8 % of the samples were positive in real-time PCR and 9.4 % were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis indi

Decoding the blueprint of receptor binding by filoviruses through large-scale binding assays and machine learning.

Evidence suggests that bats are important hosts of filoviruses, yet the specific species involved remain largely unidentified. Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) is an essential entry receptor, with amino acid variations influencing viral susceptibility and species-specific tropism. Herein, we conducted combinatorial binding studies with seven filovirus glycoproteins (GPs) and NPC1 orthologs from 81 bat species. We found that GP-NPC1 binding correlated poorly with phylogeny. By integrating binding assays with machine learning, we identified genetic factors influencing virus-receptor-binding and predicted

Transcriptional signatures of Ebola and Marburg virus infection in a bat-immune-system (BIS) mouse model.

Bats are the reservoir hosts for a diverse range of viruses, including some that are highly pathogenic to humans, yet they generally harbor these pathogens without showing symptoms. This unique tolerance to viral infection makes them a critical model to study virus-host interactions and immune responses. Immunological in vivo studies in bats are however often hampered by low reproducibility, a lack of specific reagents, limited access to adequate facilities and availability of inbred bat colonies to perform experiments. In order to overcome these challenges, we have developed a bat xenograft m

Coronavirus Cryptic Landscape and Draft Genome of a Novel CoV Clade Related to MERS From Bats Circulating in Northeastern Brazil.

We identified seven distinct coronaviruses (CoVs) in bats from Brazil, classified into 229E-related (Alpha-CoV), Nobecovirus, Sarbecovirus, and Merbecovirus (Beta-CoV), including one closely related to MERS-like CoV with 82.8% genome coverage. To accomplish this, we screened 423 oral and rectal swabs from 16 different bat species using molecular assays, RNA sequencing, and evolutionary analysis. Notably, gaps in the spike-encoding gene led us to design new primers and perform Sanger sequencing, which revealed high similarities to MERS-related (MERSr) CoV strains found in humans and camels. Echolocating bats show species-specific variation in susceptibility to acoustic forward masking.

Echolocating bats rely on precise auditory temporal processing to detect echoes generated by calls that may be emitted at rates reaching 150-200 Hz. High call rates can introduce forward masking perceptual effects that interfere with echo detection; however, bats may have evolved specializations to prevent repetition suppression of auditory responses and facilitate detection of sounds separated by brief intervals. Recovery of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) was assessed in two species that differ in the temporal characteristics of their echolocation behaviors: Eptesicus fuscus, which use

Japanese Encephalitis: Risk of Emergence in the United States and the Resulting Impact.

Japanese encephalitis virus is a mosquito-borne member of the Flaviviridae family. JEV is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in Asia and is characterized by encephalitis, high lethality, and neurological sequelae in survivors. The virus also causes severe disease in swine, which are an amplifying host in the transmission cycle, and in horses. US agricultural authorities have recently recognized the threat to the swine industry and initiated preparedness activities. Other mosquito-borne viruses exotic to the Western Hemisphere have been introduced and established in recent years, including
