Cognitive assessment of risk-taking behavior in adults with substance use disorders and internet addiction.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use and internet addiction disorders have a greater likelihood to indulge in risky behavior and show signs of impairment in self-regulation. Risk-taking behavior depends on reward seeking, impulsiveness, and cognitive control systems such as executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory. Assessment using cognitive tasks and validated questionnaires can provide an insight into the risk-taking behavior of these individuals. AIM: To assess the risk-taking behavior in adults with substance use disorders (SUDs) and internet addiction, by bo…

Feasibility randomised controlled trial of online group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Functional Cognitive Disorder (ACT4FCD).

INTRODUCTION: Functional cognitive disorder (FCD) is seen increasingly in clinics commissioned to assess cognitive disorders. Patients report frequent cognitive, especially memory, failures. The diagnosis can be made clinically, and unnecessary investigations avoided. While there is some evidence that psychological treatments can be helpful, they are not routinely available. Therefore, we have developed a brief psychological intervention using the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that can be delivered in groups and online. We are conducting a feasibility study to assess wh

Driving the brain towards creativity and intelligence: A network control theory analysis.

High-level cognitive constructs, such as creativity and intelligence, entail complex and multiple processes, including cognitive control processes. Recent neurocognitive research on these constructs highlight the importance of dynamic interaction across neural network systems and the role of cognitive control processes in guiding such a dynamic interaction. How can we quantitatively examine the extent and ways in which cognitive control contributes to creativity and intelligence? To address this question, we apply a computational network control theory (NCT) approach to structural brain imagin

The relationship between sleep-wake cycle and cognitive functioning in young people with affective disorders.

Although early-stage affective disorders are associated with both cognitive dysfunction and sleep-wake disruptions, relationships between these factors have not been specifically examined in young adults. Sleep and circadian rhythm disturbances in those with affective disorders are considerably heterogeneous, and may not relate to cognitive dysfunction in a simple linear fashion. This study aimed to characterise profiles of sleep and circadian disturbance in young people with affective disorders and examine associations between these profiles and cognitive performance. Actigraphy monitoring wa

[Higher brain dysfunction in benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spike and atypical benign partial epilepsy of childhood].

Although some recent studies have reported various cognitive impairments and behavioral disorders in children having benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spike (BCECT), it is still commonly believed that BCECT does not cause any definite neuropsychological impairment. In addition, reported impairments range over various cognitive functions, and there is no general agreement on this issue. We performed detailed neuropsychological tests in 17 children with BCECT and analyzed the profiles of their subtests. Atypical benign partial epilepsy of childhood (ABPE) is a type of BCECT in which

Slipping while counting: gaze-gait interactions during perturbed walking under dual-task conditions.

Walking is a complex task. To prevent falls and injuries, gait needs to constantly adjust to the environment. This requires information from various sensory systems; in turn, moving through the environment continuously changes available sensory information. Visual information is available from a distance, and therefore most critical when negotiating difficult terrain. To effectively sample visual information, humans adjust their gaze to the terrain or-in laboratory settings-when facing motor perturbations. During activities of daily living, however, only a fraction of sensory and cognitive res

Preliminary evidence for cognitive associations of postural control in older and younger adults, and people with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is one of the most debilitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is also major concern in healthy older adults (OA), contributing to increased fall risk. Cognitive function plays a critical role in postural control. However, little is known about the specific cognitive domains related to postural control in these populations. This study aimed to examine how postural control relates to different domains of cognitive function across varying standing sensory conditions, and how these associations are influenced by age, PD and PD severity. METHODS: A total

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder: Predictors of Treatment Outcome in a Quasi-Naturalistic Setting.

We examined the outcomes of individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) in a sample of 93 adults seeking treatment in a university outpatient clinic specializing in CBT for SAD. Treatment followed the structure of a manual, but number of sessions varied according to client needs. After approximately 20 weeks of therapy, patients' social anxiety had decreased and their quality of life had increased. Patients with more severe SAD or comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) at pretreatment demonstrated higher levels of social anxiety averaged across pre- and po

A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of Dialogical Exposure Therapy versus Cognitive Processing Therapy for Adult Outpatients Suffering from PTSD after Type I Trauma in Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Although there are effective treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there is little research on treatments with non-cognitive-behavioural backgrounds, such as gestalt therapy. We tested an integrative gestalt-derived intervention, dialogical exposure therapy (DET), against an established cognitive-behavioural treatment (cognitive processing therapy, CPT) for possible differential effects in terms of symptomatic outcome and drop-out rates. METHODS: We randomized 141 treatment-seeking individuals with a diagnosis of PTSD to receive either DET or CPT. Therapy length in

Ketones and brain health: from metabolic rescue to metabolic flexibility.

The human brain relies predominantly on glucose under habitual dietary conditions, but this dependence is not absolute. During fasting, prolonged exercise, carbohydrate restriction or ketogenic interventions, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and acetoacetate (AcAc) become available as cerebral fuels and metabolic signals. Most literature on ketones and cognition has emphasized mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders, where impaired cerebral glucose utilization provides a rationale for ketone-based brain-energy rescue. This Mini Review retains t

Functional connectivity alterations in post-traumatic stress disorder: A resting-state fMRI study of brain network dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging evidence positions post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a disease fundamentally involving disturbances in whole-brain network coordination. Nonetheless, comprehensive studies systematically integrating time-invariant connectivity metrics with time-resolved dynamic assessments remain limited. METHOD: This case-control investigation enrolled 33 PTSD patients and 33 healthy controls who completed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and cognitive assessment using the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III. We evaluated static connectivity via functional

4-Methylumbelliferone Restores Age-Related Changes in Perineuronal Nets, Memory, and Neuroinflammation.

Aging-associated cognitive decline is closely linked to dysregulated glial activity and chronic neuroinflammation, which together constrain neuronal plasticity. Astrocytes and microglia are key regulators of the brain extracellular matrix (ECM), including perineuronal nets (PNNs), whose accumulation during aging contributes to reduced synaptic flexibility. Targeting ECM-glia interactions therefore represents a promising strategy to modulate neuroinflammatory and plasticity-related processes. Here, we investigated the effects of long-term oral administration of 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), an
