The case was a 49-year-old woman. In 1995, she underwent Hartmann's operation for sigmoid colon carcinoma. Histological stage was IV [se, n4(+), P0, H0, M(-)]. Adjuvant chemotherapy was performed by MMC and 5'-DFUR. After 7 years from the surgery, she had a lumbar pain. CT examination revealed a retroperitoneal tumor-like shadow and Para-aortic lymph nodes were swelling. In 2002, she underwent probe laparotomy. There were massive lymph nodes metastasis, and tumor resection was impossible. Following several systemic chemotherapies such as UFT/CPT-11 and TS-1, the tumor progressed and liver meta

Colonic ischaemia is a serious complication after aortic surgery, and is most frequent after repair of ruptured aortic aneurysms. It was felt that the increased risk of colonic ischaemia during shock might be the result of a local effect of the renin-angiotensin system in the splanchnic circulation, which is exacerbated by poor perfusion. In order to evaluate the activity of the renin-angiotensin system in the colonic circulation, a subtotal occlusion of the distal aorta was induced in nine pigs. A colonic flow reduction of 70% was created for 4 hours. In the experimental group (n = 6), induce

An 8-yr-old Japanese boy was hospitalized, complaining of active hematochezia. He was shown to have a cherry-red, blood-oozing area of vascular dilation with mucosal prominence in the sigmoid colon by endoscopy, but had no other mucocutaneous vascular abnormalities. A family history was noncontributory. Under the clinical diagnosis of angiodysplasia of the sigmoid colon, he underwent an elliptical resection of the part, based on the intraoperative endoscopic findings. However, histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed a totally different picture from that seen in angiodysplasi

Reported is a rare case of a multiple peripheral pulmonary carcinoids showing a diffuse lung disease synchronously associated with a sigmoid colon cancer. An abnormal chest shadow was detected in a 75-year-old male by X ray during a periodic health examination. After admission to hospital for a more thorough examination he was found to have a sigmoid colon cancer. A CT scan of his chest suggested sarcoidosis, but the results of a bronchofiberscopic examination appeared normal. Subsequently, a TBLB specimen revealed typical carcinoid tumors. Thus, the diagnosis of diffuse multiple peripheral ca

A 72-year-old man who underwent laparoscopic radical cystectomy and ileal conduit construction for bladder cancer exhibited sigmoid colonic wall thickening and metastatic liver and lung lesions on surveillance CT. Colonoscopy revealed semicircular type 2 advanced sigmoid colon carcinoma. The primary tumor and metastases were resectable. However, preoperative weight reduction was prioritized owing to the patient's BMI of 35.5. Chemotherapy was administered during their weight loss. After 2 months, the patient's BMI decreased to 32.2, and elective surgery was performed. Anatomical alterations re

RATIONALE: As the third most common cancer in women, cervical cancer usually spreads to adjacent organs. Distant metastasis from the cervix to the gastrointestinal tract is an extremely rare occurrence.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we present a rare case of a 57-year-old woman who was treated by hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the uterine cervix. A metastatic location in the sigmoid colon was revealed after 8 years causing an acute intestinal obstruction in this patient.
DIAGNOSES: Final surgical pathology showed

The case is a woman in her 60s. Sigmoid colon cancer surgery, liver metastasis surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy were performed at another hospital 2 years ago. Later, she developed a metastasis in her liver and was recommended surgery, but she refused treatment and was transferred. Her liver metastasis had invaded the stomach and formed a giant gastric ulcer. This time she had an adhesive ileus and underwent laparoscopic surgery at our hospital. At that time, we observed the state of liver metastasis and gastric infiltration by laparoscopy, so we thought that palliative surgery was possible

BACKGROUND: For patients with rectal and sigmoid colon cancer, dissecting No. 253 lymph nodes and preserving the left colic artery are the essentials of radical surgery. In clinical work, some surgeons prefer to dissect lymph nodes with skeletonization, believing that lymph nodes can be dissected completely by this method, while other surgeons prefer to dissect lymph nodes with venation. They believe that their method can not only dissect lymph nodes completely but also ensure the safety of patients. This study aimed to investigate whether lymphadenectomy with skeletonization is superior to ly

BACKGROUND One treatment for colon endoluminal tumors is endoscopic resection, i.e., endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). In this report we describe a case of an endoluminal tumor resected safely and completely by combined endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery (CELS). CASE REPORT A 70-year-old female was admitted to our hospital for cholelithiasis, and we planned a cholecystectomy. She had a surgical history for endometrial cancer, and she was taking amlodipine 2.5 mg/day for hypertension. A preoperative colonoscopy for screening revealed an 18-mm endoluminal tumor in the sigmoid colon. We tried

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is reportedly well. Extremely rare patients with DCIS develop distant breast cancer metastasis without locoregional or contralateral recurrence. This is the first report of multiple bones and sigmoid colon metastases from DCIS after mastectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman was diagnosed with DCIS, and she received mastectomy, followed by endocrine therapy and target therapy. During the following-up, convulsions and pain on the legs were complaint. Therefore, Computed Tomography (CT) on bones and positron emission tomograph

INTRODUCTION: Although carcinomas of the rectosigmoid junction are frequent, specific data on these tumors are sparse because assignment either to the colon or rectum is common. The objective of this study is to determine whether carcinomas of the rectosigmoid junction can be assigned to the sigmoid colon or to the upper rectum in terms of tumor characteristics and oncological outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 337 consecutive patients undergoing resection of carcinomas in the sigmoid colon, the rectosigmoid junction and the upper third of the rectum were analyzed retrospectively and additionall

A comprehensive literature review was performed to evaluate the effect of various hormonal therapies, in terms of variations of intestinal and pain complaints and of patient satisfaction with treatment, in women with symptomatic, non-severely sub-occlusive endometriosis infiltrating the proximal rectum and sigmoid colon. A MEDLINE search through PubMed from 2000 to 2018 was conducted to identify all original English language articles published on medical treatment for colorectal endometriosis. Additional reports were identified by systematically reviewing reference lists and using the "similar
