A case of Powassan virus encephalitis.

A case of encephalitis due to Powassan virus, probably transmitted through tick-bite, is reported in an 8-year-old boy. There was a 50-fold increase in neutralization titre against Powassan virus, but the virus could not be isolated. Other virological investigations were negative. The patient survived and early physiotherapy and speech re-education could be instituted. Nine months after onset of illness the patient showed moderate sequelae, despite a very severe illness.

Seronegative glandular fever.

Seven sporadic cases of ;seronegative glandular fever' have been examined in detail; five of the patients were adults aged more than 30, two were children. None showed evidence of ;incomplete' or heat-labile sheep cell agglutinins, but in three very weak, though otherwise typical, glandular fever agglutinins were detected. Three of the other four showed evidence of certain infections, but these infections probably accounted for no more than a part of each illness. It is suggested that some, and possibly most, sporadic cases of seronegative glandular fever are of the same disease as seropositiv

Retrospective analysis of the prevalence of Brucella antibodies in sheep in the Karas Region of Namibia.

In this retrospective study, complete Brucella serology data from the annual national brucellosis testing program and disease investigation for the years 2008-2010 was collated and analyzed to estimate the prevalence of brucellosis in sheep in the Karas Region of Namibia. A total of 22,994 serological results from 762 flocks screened using the Rose Bengal test (RBT) and confirmed using the complement fixation test (CFT) were analyzed. An overall prevalence of 0.14% was recorded over the 3 years. Yearly prevalence was 0.19% (2008), 0.05% (2009), and 0.18% (2010). At district level, brucellosis

Q fever diagnosis in domestic ruminants: comparison between complement fixation and commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Q fever is an important zoonotic disease caused by infection with the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Veterinary diagnostic laboratories, including the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in England and Wales, have traditionally relied on the complement fixation test (CFT) for serological diagnosis. However, Q fever has assumed greater significance in recent years following several large human outbreaks linked to exposure to infected ruminants and it is essential that more reliable tests are introduced to detect the presence of C. burnetii infection in animals. The objective of the current study

[Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis: physiopathology].

INFANTILE LEISHMANIASIS: The protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania are the causal agent of various diseases ranging from cutaneous lesions to fatal systemic diseases. In southern France, Leishmania infantum is an endemic species recognized as the causal agent of infantile leishmaniasis (Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis). Little is known about the pathophysiology of the disease in humans, but models in mice may provide a new approach. INSECT VECTOR: Leishmania infantum are carried by sand flies. Antigenic modifications of the promastigote forms occur in these insects modifying lipophy

Control of equine piroplasmosis in Brazil.

The importance of equine piroplasmosis control in endemic countries has increased in recent years and plays an important role to maintain the international market open to the horse industry. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the occurrence of equine piroplasmosis (Babesia equi or Theileria equi and Babesia caballi) in Brazil--a country where the disease occurs endemically--in different climatic conditions, and to evaluate the results of a strategy for tick control in order to decrease infection rates. Blood samples were taken from 720 horses on 28 farms from different regions and su

Sickle cell disease with complicated influenza B virus infection.

The Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Center for Disease Control for many years have recommended the routine use of influenza vaccine in various hemoglobinopathies including sickle cell disease. This recommendation, however, has not been included in the patient care protocols of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers program of NIHLB. Most clinicians have not used yearly influenza vaccine for their patients with sickle cell disease. This article reports a case of a 5-year-old boy with sickle cell d

[An experimental study of the contact transmission of the Marburg virus].

Experiments in guinea pigs and M. rhesus monkeys showed the possibility of contact infection of animals with Marburg virus. Secondary infection occurred most intensively when the monkeys were kept together but was also shown to be possible when the animals were separated but placed in the direction of the air flow from the sick monkeys as well as by "nose-to-nose" contact excluding the alimentary mode of transmission and the role of the agent excreted in the urine.

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus infections in young dairy cattle: clinical and haematological findings.

Clinical signs and haematological findings during the acute and convalescent phases of an infection with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were studied under field conditions. The study was carried out in 139 cattle less than 16 months of age in 16 herds with serologically proven bovine RSV infections. Blood was collected for serological and haematological examination. Repeated clinical examinations were carried out until 35 days after appearance of disease. Signs of general disease such as reduced appetite and a body temperature of 40 degrees C or higher lasted less than three days in
