A Gamblers Clustering Based on Their Favorite Gambling Activity.

The objective of this study was to identify profiles of gamblers to explain the choice of preferred gambling activity among both problem and non-problem gamblers. 628 non-problem and problem gamblers were assessed with a structured interview including "Работает" (sociodemographic characteristics, gambling habits and personality profile assessed with the Temperament and Character Inventory-125) and "pathological" [diagnosis of pathological gambling, gambling-related cognitions (GRCs) and psychiatric comorbidity] variables. We performed a two-step cluster analysis based solely on "Работает" variab

Hostility, hopelessness and deliberate self-harm: a prospective follow-up study.

Sixty-one consecutive patients who presented following an episode of deliberate self-harm (DSH) were assessed on a number of variables, including measures of hopelessness and hostility. Attempts were made to follow all of the patients. Those who were known to have had a further episode of DSH had significantly higher levels of hopelessness and intropunitive hostility after the index episode than those who did not repeat. The question of vulnerability to DSH is discussed as well as the possibility of using measures of hopelessness and intropunitive hostility to identify those at greater risk of

Evaluation of central serotonergic function in affective and related disorders by the fenfluramine challenge test: a critical review.

Plasma prolactin levels following oral administration of the serotonin (5-HT) releasing agent, fenfluramine hydrochloride, have been extensively used to evaluate central serotonergic function in affective and related disorders. Cortisol responses to fenfluramine have generally been a less informative measure. In healthy subjects, prolactin release by fenfluramine is dose-dependent, blocked by antagonists of serotonin receptors of the 5-HT-2a/2c type, negatively correlated with age and increased in young females. In major depression, a preponderance of studies have found blunted prolactin respo

Stuck in my head: Musical obsessions and experiential avoidance.

Earworms refer to catchy tunes that run repeatedly through a person's mind. Empirical literature regarding earworms is scant; however, some researchers have conceptualized the phenomenon as an unwanted intrusion in the context of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The current study expands upon past research by characterizing the experience of earworms and examining associations of earworm-related distress and interference with theoretical constructs of interest, including obsessive beliefs and experiential avoidance. Two hundred forty participants completed an online survey regarding the experien

Attachment and Personality Disorders Among Child Molesters: The Role of Trust.

The present study investigated multivariate associations between attachment styles and personality disorders (PDs)-and the mediating role of trust-in a sample of child molesters ( n = 84) and a matched control group from the general community ( n = 80). Among child molesters, canonical correlation analysis revealed that two variates resembling avoidant and anxious attachment dimensions were associated with PD traits. Attachment avoidance was related to schizoid, schizotypal, and avoidant PDs, with a marginal contribution of antisocial PD. Attachment anxiety was related to borderline and histri

Transorbital lobotomy; its use in relapsing psychotic states.

Twenty-five private patients were treated by transorbital lobotomy. The period of observation after operation was from six months to three years. In 14 cases of affective disorders in which there was not adequate response to shock therapy, nine patients made social recovery and maintained good health and four were improved. Some follow-up shock therapy was necessary for about one-fifth of the patients. Of eight schizophrenic patients four made excellent social recoveries, two improved and two were not improved. In three cases of obsessive compulsive states, results were not satisfactory. In li

Body as expression of psychiatric distress: insights from restrictive eating disorders, non-suicidal self-injuries, and suicide attempts.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a developmental period marked by vulnerabilities where psychological distress often manifests through the body. Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs), Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), and Suicide Attempts (SAs) represent distinct yet overlapping expressions of this phenomenon. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compared 60 adolescents (20 for each group) aged 12-18 across these groups using a comprehensive multimethod assessment, including the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS-PL), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Personal

Comparison of body image dissatisfaction among adolescent boys who do and do not stutter and investigating the relationship between body image dissatisfaction, anxiety and Self-assessed stuttering severity.

BACKGROUND: Dissatisfaction with body image in adolescents may be associated with disorders such as anxiety. As studies have reported a high risk of anxiety disorders, especially social anxiety, in people who stutter, the present study aimed to compare body image dissatisfaction in adolescent boys who do and do not stutter and investigate the association between body image dissatisfaction and anxiety in both groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which 102 adolescent male students aged 15 to 17 years (divided into two groups: 51 who stutter and 51 who do not stutter

A randomised trial investigating guided self-help to reduce perfectionism and its impact on bulimia nervosa: a pilot study.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate reducing perfectionism as a potential treatment target for individuals with Bulimia Nervosa (BN). METHOD: Forty-eight individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for BN or eating disorder - not otherwise specified with binge eating [objective or subjective] or purging at least once per week were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned to receive 8 sessions of manual-based guided self-help (GSH) over a 6-week period that was focused on either cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for perfectionism, CBT for BN, or a placebo. Individuals were asse

Masculine Gender Role Stress: a potential predictor of phobic and obsessive-compulsive behaviour.

Eisler and Blalock (Clin. Psychol. Rev. 11 (1991) 45) developed a cognitively mediated notion of Masculine Gender Role Stress (MGRS) which assumes that rigid commitment to masculine schemata for appraisal and coping with life's problems may both produce stress and result in dysfunctional coping patterns in men. Previous findings obtained in a non-clinical sample pointed to the ability of the MGRS General scale to predict different forms of irrational fears. Using a predominantly psychologically distressed sample, the present study replicated this finding. In addition, different subordinate con

[Obsessive behavior and thoughts in patients with myasthenia gravis].

230 patients with myasthenia gravis were investigated by a german questionnaire, the HAMBURGER-ZWANGS-INVENTAR, in order to quantify their obsessive and compulsive behaviour. Compared to normals, myasthenic patients show higher scores on the compulsion-subscales of the inventory. The most significant differences appeared on the orderliness-subscale. On the other hand ratings of obsessive behaviour are significantly lower than in the normal population. Especially (auto)aggressive ruminations do hardly occur in myasthenia, which is a remarkable fact in this autoaggressive immunological disease.

Impulsiveness and lack of inhibitory control in eating disorders.

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders are considered to lie on a spectrum of disorders with varying degrees of obsessive-compulsive and impulsive traits. Restrictive anorexia nervosa patients (AN-R) are thought to belong to the obsessive pole of the spectrum, and purging-anorexia (AN-P) and bulimia nervosa (BN) patients to the impulsive pole. In this study we have compared impulsive traits in three groups of eating disordered patients (total N=56) and a control group of 83 female students. Information about impulsive traits and lack of inhibitory control was gathered by means of standardized rating sca

Evidence against a genetic relationship between Tourette's syndrome and anxiety, depression, panic and phobic disorders.

Analyses were undertaken to examine whether a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, affective, substance abuse and psychotic disorders, represent variant manifestations of Tourette's syndrome (TS). Previous studies have suggested that chronic tics (CT) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are variant expressions of TS since both CT and OCD are elevated among relatives of TS probands. In the current study, no other psychiatric disorder was significantly elevated among the relatives who did not have TS, CT or OCD when compared with a control sample. These findings are not co
