Herpetic keratitis after corneal crosslinking.

Corneal crosslinking is considered a safe procedure even if sight-threatening side effects have been reported. Other han our case report, few reports of herpetic keratitis (HK) after crosslinking have been published. We report a new onset HK after corneal crosslinking for keratoconus. A 40-year-old woman underwent corneal collagen crosslinking in her right eye for progressive keratoconus. The patient returned with pain and photophobia. Infiltration in the corneal stroma was observed. Fluorescein staining specified epithelial defects overlying the corneal infiltrates. The diagnostic of HK was c

Silk fibroin/vitreous humor hydrogel scaffold modified by a carbodiimide crosslinker for wound healing.

Natural-derived biomaterials can be used as substrates for the growth, proliferation, and differentiation of cells. In this study, bovine vitreous humor as a biological material was cross-linked to silk fibroin with different concentration ratios to design a suitable substrate for corneal tissue regeneration. The cross-linked samples were evaluated with different analyses such as structural, physical (optical, swelling, and degradation), mechanical, and biological (viability, cell adhesion) assays. The results showed that all samples had excellent transparency, especially those with higher sil

Boric Acid Functionalized Hypercrosslinked Polymers for Selective Extraction of Trace Catecholamines and Their Metabolites in Rat Serum.

Abnormal levels of catecholamine (CA) neurotransmitters and their metabolites in biological fluids can lead to various neurological disorders. Herein, a boric acid-functionalized hypercrosslinked polymer was prepared and utilized as a sorbent for the dispersive solid-phase extraction of CAs and their metabolites in rat serum. By combination with a high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector, the extraction parameters for the seven target analytes were optimized. Under the optimal extraction condition, the methodology for the quantitative analysis of CAs and their metabolites i

Compaction of very thin corneas from ultraviolet A riboflavin-vitamin E transepithelial cross-linking.

The purpose of the study was to determine the decrease in pachymetry of very thin corneas with advanced keratoconus due to corneal compaction from the ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiation phase of transepithelial (epi-on) cross-linking. Twenty removed corneal buttons were obtained from patients who underwent penetrating keratoplasty for advanced keratoconus. Removed corneal buttons selected from among the post-surgical specimens for this study had intact epithelium, no scarring or surgical cautery, endothelial cell density >2500 cells/mm2, and average pachymetry over the measured points of below 4

Corneal crosslinking efficacy in patients with keratoconus under 18 years of age.

PURPOSE: Keratoconus presents certain specificities in pediatric patients compared with adults. The greatest challenge is because the disease is typically more severe and progresses faster in children. This retrospective study aimed to report crosslinking procedure in patients under 18 years of age and their follow-up for at least 24 months after the procedure. METHODS: Overall, 12 eyes from 10 patients were studied and data, such as visual acuity with and without correction, maximum keratometry, corneal thickness, foveal thickness, and endothelial microscopy, were assessed at both preoperati

Comparison of efficacy and safety of accelerated trans-epithelial crosslinking for keratoconus patients with corneas thicker and thinner than 380μm.

PURPOSE: Accelerated trans-epithelial cross-linking (ATE-CXL), a therapy to halt keratoconus progression, has the merit of widening the indications for thinner corneas (<380 μm). Since a hypotonic solution affects the swollen cornea, corneas of <380 μm thickness at preoperative measurement can be an indication for ATE-CXL. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the efficacy and safety of ATE-CXL for keratoconus between corneas with thicknesses <380 μm and ≥380 μm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four eyes of 27 patients who underwent ATE-CXL (30 mW/cm2; 3 minutes) with completion of

Genetically encoded formaldehyde sensors inspired by a protein intra-helical crosslinking reaction.

Formaldehyde (FA) has long been considered as a toxin and carcinogen due to its damaging effects to biological macromolecules, but its beneficial roles have been increasingly appreciated lately. Real-time monitoring of this reactive molecule in living systems is highly desired in order to decipher its physiological and/or pathological functions, but a genetically encoded FA sensor is currently lacking. We herein adopt a structure-based study of the underlying mechanism of the FA-responsive transcription factor HxlR from Bacillus subtilis, which shows that HxlR recognizes FA through an intra-he

Combined corneal cross-linking and 320° intrastromal corneal ring segments in progressive keratoconus: one-year results.

BACKGROUND: Intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) attain regularization of corneal surface in keratoconus (KC), while collagen cross-linking (CXL) halts or slows its progression. The long-arc 320° rings combined with CXL may have a dual-benefit synergistic effect of surface regularity and progression halt. METHODS: This was a prospective case series study including eyes with progressive KC. Femto-assisted 320° ICRS implantation and epi-off CXL 8 weeks later were carried out in all cases. Uncorrected (UCVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were assessed using Snellen's chart, wh

Corneal Cross-Linking for Keratoconus: Current Knowledge and Practice and Future Trends.

Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) with riboflavin is an accepted universal standard of care for our keratoconus patients with progressive disease. It has been a game changer in how we manage keratoconus. Early diagnosis and treatment is essential in paediatric patients as younger patients progress more rapidly and have poorer transplant outcomes. There is an ongoing debate around standard, accelerated, and transepithelial protocols of CXL, the role of CXL, and the combination of laser refractive surgery. Future developments will improve CXL safety and efficacy and the scope of utilization,

Quantitative cross-linking/mass spectrometry to elucidate structural changes in proteins and their complexes.

Quantitative cross-linking/mass spectrometry (QCLMS/QXL-MS) probes structural changes of proteins in solution. This method has revealed induced conformational changes, composition shifts in conformational ensembles and changes in protein interactions. It illuminates different structural states of proteins or protein complexes by comparing which residue pairs can be cross-linked in these states. Cross-links provide information about structural changes that may be inaccessible by alternative technologies. Small local conformational changes affect relative abundances of nearby cross-links, wherea

Effect of covering with cross-linked gelatin glue on tissue regeneration in a rat lung injury model.

OBJECTIVES: Thoracic reintervention is a common treatment; however, preventing adhesion of the lung to the thoracic cavity wall remains a problem. This study aimed to investigate the effect on pleural adhesion of covering the postoperative pleural injury site with cross-linked gelatin glue (gelatin plus glutaraldehyde, hereafter 'gelatin glue') and to evaluate the proliferation of healing cells on gelatin glue. METHODS: We created a rat incisional lung-wound model and compared the effects of sealing the wound with gelatin glue (group A, n = 5), fibrin glue (group B, n = 5) or fibrin glue with
