We investigated the efficacy of cyclocryotherapy, a procedure which destroys the ciliary epithelium, thereby decreasing the production of aqueous humor, by retrospectively studying 109 eyes with advanced primary congenital glaucoma that had undergone the procedure. The eyes were divided into two groups: group I comprised 75 eyes (69%) that had undergone conventional surgical procedures for congenital glaucoma prior to cyclocryotherapy; group II, 34 eyes (31%) that had not undergone any such previous procedures. Cyclocryoapplication in glaucomatous patients is performed since 1983 by the method settled on the basis of results of experimental investigations. Observations concern 174 persons with various forms of glaucoma. Best results were obtained in patients with glaucoma in the course of uveitis, with secondary glaucoma after perforating injuries and after intracapsular cataract extraction. Fewest favourable results were observed in patients with closed angle glaucoma.

The treatment of pit viper envenomation by fasciotomy continues to be controversial because elevated intracompartment pressures have never been previously documented. Two patients with severe pit viper envenomation of the thumb had signs and symptoms of elevated intracompartment pressures. Elevated intracompartment tissue pressures were documented in both cases. Antibiotic sensitivity of the pharynx mucosa microflora in patients with chronic pharyngitis subjected to cryotherapy was studied. Examination of 36 patients showed that cryotherapy at a temperature of -1950 markedly decreased the number of the grown colonies, their qualitative characteristics being changed. In 10 days both the quantitative and the qualitative characteristics of the flora completely reduced. The cryotherapy did not change the virulence of the flora and its sensitivity to antibiotics.
