Effect and mechanism of functional compound fruit drink on gut microbiota in constipation mice.

Compound fruit drink (CFD) is a functional drink prepared with fruit, Chinese herbs and prebiotic fructooligosaccharide as the main ingredients. Loperamide hydrochloride was used to establish a mouse model of constipation. And the effect of CFD on the improvement of constipation and the impact on gut microbiota were studied. The results showed that CFD significantly enhanced intestinal motility in constipated mice (P < 0.05). It significantly improved serum levels of gastrointestinal regulatory-related peptides, elevated the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) content and alleviated colonic injury

Additive Effects of Drinking Habits and a Susceptible Genetic Polymorphism on Cholesterol Efflux Capacity.

AIMS: High levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are not necessarily effective in preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) has attracted attention regarding HDL functionality. We aimed to elucidate whether drinking habits are associated with CEC levels, while also paying careful attention to confounding factors including serum HDL-C levels, other life style factors, and rs671 (*2), a genetic polymorphism of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene determining alcohol consumption habit. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was perfo…

Attenuation by habitual alcohol drinking of the associations of obesity with blood pressure and pulse pressure.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and alcohol drinking are known to be risk factors for hypertension. However, it remains to be determined whether alcohol affects the relationships of obesity with blood pressure and pulse pressure. METHODS: The participants in this study were 29 171 men who had received annual health checkups. Relationships of BMI with blood pressure and pulse pressure were investigated in four subject groups divided by average daily alcohol consumption (grams of ethanol/day), non-, light (<22), moderate (≥22 and <44) and heavy (≥44) drinkers. RESULTS: BMI was significantly correlated wit…

Validation of the AUDIT and AUDIT-C for Hazardous Drinking in Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: One of the best-known tools in screening for hazardous drinking is the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and its abbreviated form, the AUDIT-C. The aim of the present study is to determine the cut-offs of both instruments in identifying hazardous drinking in older adults. METHOD: A sample of 1577 older adults completed a questionnaire regarding alcohol behavior. Hazardous drinking was defined as drinking >10 units/week. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves of AUDIT and AUDIT-C were calculated and cut-off scores were derived. RESULTS: Respectively 27.3% …

Study on the Mechanism of Lianpu Drink for the Treatment of Chronic Gastritis Based on Network Pharmacology.

Chronic gastritis (CG) places a considerable burden on the healthcare system worldwide. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas characterized by multicompounds and multitargets have been acknowledged with striking effects in the treatment of CG in China's history. Nevertheless, their accurate mechanisms of action are still ambiguous. In this study, we analyzed the effective compounds, potential targets, and related biological pathway of Lianpu Drink (LPD), a TCM formula which has been reported to have a therapeutic effect on CG, by contrasting a "compound-target-disease" network. According

Unveiling the Mechanism of Principal Drugs of Lianpu Drink on Chronic Gastritis by Network Pharmacology.

Lianpu drink (LPD) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula for the treatment of chronic gastritis (CG), and its clinical effects have been effectively verified. However, due to the complexity of the chemical composition of TCM formulas, its mechanism of action has not yet been clearly explained. Many studies have shown that the principal drugs in the TCM formula play a major therapeutic role. Therefore, in this study, the principal drugs Coptidis Rhizoma (CR) and Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. (MOR) in LPD were used as the main research objects to predict the mechanism of LPD on C

Formation and occurrence of disinfection byproducts of benzodiazepine drug estazolam in drinking water of Beijing.

Estazolam (EZ) is a long-acting benzodiazepine (BZD) drug with high clinical consumption in China to treat anxiety, depression and other syndromes. Recently, it has been found as a leading potentially inappropriate medication among hospitalized elderly patients, increasing the risk of falls. It is discharged into the aquatic environment after use and has been frequently detected, ultimately affecting the safety of drinking water. In the present study, the reaction of EZ during chlorination disinfection was investigated in detail with regard to its transformation and kinetics. By means of ultra…

Health Risk Assessment for Exposure to Nitrate in Drinking Water in Central Java, Indonesia.

Since 2005, over 30 epidemiological studies have evaluated the association between nitrate in drinking water and adverse health outcomes. Conditions that lead to nitrate pollution in water, such as open defecation, the proximity of septic tanks to water sources, and the use of inorganic fertilizer, are rampant in Indonesia, which has experienced little research evaluating nitrate in drinking water. We conducted a health risk assessment for exposure to nitrate in drinking water and evaluated the nitrate concentration in key water sources in two villages of rural Central Java, Indonesia. The nit…

Qualitative insights into Australian consumers' views for and against government action on sugary drinks.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant evidence of harms associated with high levels of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption, and international moves towards regulation to curb overconsumption of such drinks, Australia has been slow to take policy action. This study provides in-depth insights into consumers' reactions to different SSB policy options. METHODS: Eight focus groups were undertaken with 59 regular SSB consumers and/or household purchasers, stratified by: young adults aged 21-29 years (no children), parents aged 35-50 (with children at home); gender; and socio-economic status. Energy Drinks and Sports Performance, Cardiovascular Risk, and Genetic Associations; Future Prospects.

The consumption of energy drinks (e.g., containing caffeine and taurine) has increased over the last decade among adolescents and athletes to enhance their cognitive level and improve intellectual and athletic performance. Numerous studies have shown that drinking moderate doses of such drinks produces beneficial effects, as they considerably boost the sporting performance of elite athletes in various sports, including both endurance and explosive events. However, apart from their ergogenic effects, the regular consumption of energy drinks also increases blood pressure and consequently incites…

Energy Drinks: A Reversible Risk Factor for Atrophic Gastritis and Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia.

Energy drinks (ED) are becoming increasingly popular, but little has been reported about their stomach effects. To our knowledge, there is no literature suggesting an association with the development of atrophic gastritis (AG) or gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM). AG and GIM have been associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. Reversal of these lesions has shown to reduce the incidence of gastric cancer but has only been studied to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. This case describes a female who consumed high amounts of ED and was subsequently diagnosed with AG and GIM. Interestingl

Tipping point: When patients stop eating and drinking in the last phase of their life.

BACKGROUND: Eating and drinking are essential also in social life. Nutrition and hydration (N&H) at end of life are often a source of discussion and distress. Stopping eating and drinking is a defining element of the dying phase, however, this time point is not well defined. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to investigate whether such a time point can be detected, whether there are specific characteristics associated. METHODS: The time point when patients stopped oral intake was analyzed in relation to time until death on a specialist palliative care ward (sPCW) of a tertiary compre…

An analysis of the stock market reaction to the announcements of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy.

On 16th March 2016, the government of the United Kingdom announced the Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL), under which UK soft-drink manufacturers were to be taxed according to the volume of products with added sugar they produced or imported. We use 'event study' methodology to assess the likely financial effect of the SDIL on parts of the soft drinks industry, using stock returns of four UK-operating soft-drink firms listed on the London Stock Exchange. We found that three of the four firms experienced negative abnormal stock returns on the day of announcement. A cross-sectional analysis revea
