Three-dimensional modeling of Marfan syndrome with elastic and hyperelastic materials assumptions using fluid-structure interaction.

BACKGROUND: Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder of the connective tissue. It most prominently influences the skeletal, cardiovascular, and ocular systems, but all fibrous connective tissue throughout the body can be affected as well. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate a realistic three-dimensional model of an aorta of a specific patient suffering from MFS by considering elastic and hyperelastic materials for the tissue using fluid-structure interaction (FSI). METHODS: Isotropic linear elastic and Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic assumptions are implemented. Linear and nonlinear mech

Effect of elastic abdominal binder on pain and functional recovery after caesarean delivery: a randomised controlled trial.

The Elastic abdominal binder has been widely employed by clinicians for pain relief, wound complications prevention, improved pulmonary function, and stabilisation. However, these proposed benefits have not been properly examined in women following caesarean delivery. We aimed to examine the effects of post-caesarean elastic abdominal binder use on recovery by comparing post-operative pain, mobility and quality of life. Pregnant women undergoing caesarean delivery were randomly assigned into two groups: abdominal binder (90 patients) and control (90 patients). The primary outcomes included the

The pilocarpine-induced ciliary body contraction affects the elastic modulus and collagen of cornea and sclera in early development.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pilocarpine-induced ciliary body constant contraction for a long time period on the elastic modulus and collagen in corneal and scleral tissues in the early developmental stage. Twelve one-month-old New Zealand white rabbits were randomly monocularly treated with pilocarpine to cause ciliary body constant contraction. After 1- and 2-months, the sclera tissues and the eyeballs were obtained to assess the cornea and three regions of the sclera-anterior, equatorial and posterior. The corneal tissues and the three regions of the scleral tissu

Impairment of elastic properties of the aorta in bicuspid aortic valve: relationship between biomolecular and aortic strain patterns.

AIMS: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is associated with aortic wall alterations. We aimed to detect any correlation between aortic elasticity and genetic and biomolecular patterns of elastin. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-nine BAV patients (mean age: 38 ± 17.05) were prospectively enrolled. A blood sample was drawn for analysis of a single nucleotide polymorphism of elastin gene (ELN rs2071307) responsible for misfolding of elastin, and for the amount of elastin soluble fragments (ESF) in the plasma. Aortic dimensions and elastic properties were determined by echocardiography, aortic stiffness (AS)…

Risk factors for re-fracture in children with diaphyseal fracture of the forearm treated with elastic stable intramedullary nailing.

A retrospective study aims to investigate predisposing factors leading to re-fracture in patients with nails still in place and to identify potential correlations between nail size-to-medullary canal diameter ratio and re-fracture, working to the hypothesis that a higher ratio correlates with a higher risk of re-fracture. Rates of re-fracture with nail still in place after forearm elastic stable intramedullary nailing are higher in younger pediatric patients. Re-fractures occurred at a mean age of 6.7 years (range 5-8.7). While the role of body frame and bone medullary diameter remains unclear

The interfascicular matrix enables fascicle sliding and recovery in tendon, and behaves more elastically in energy storing tendons.

While the predominant function of all tendons is to transfer force from muscle to bone and position the limbs, some tendons additionally function as energy stores, reducing the cost of locomotion. Energy storing tendons experience extremely high strains and need to be able to recoil efficiently for maximum energy storage and return. In the equine forelimb, the energy storing superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) has much higher failure strains than the positional common digital extensor tendon (CDET). However, we have previously shown that this is not due to differences in the properties of

Linear elastic properties of the facial soft tissues using an aspiration device: towards patient specific characterization.

Biomechanical modeling of the facial soft tissue behavior is needed in aesthetic or maxillo-facial surgeries where the simulation of the bone displacements cannot accurately predict the visible outcome on the patient's face. Because these tissues have different nature and elastic properties across the face, depending on their thickness, and their content in fat or muscle, individualizing their mechanical parameters could increase the simulation accuracy. Using a specifically designed aspiration device, the facial soft tissues deformation is measured at four different locations (cheek, cheekbon

Aortic elastic properties predict occult coronary artery disease: a multidetector row computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) is an attractive noninvasive imaging modality to detect coronary atherosclerotic plaques which may be underestimated by conventional angiography. However, its routine clinical use is limited due to contrast-associated problems, high cost, inapplicability at bedside and exposure to radiation. Thus, exploring safer and more practical measurements to predict occult coronary artery disease (CAD) is required. AIM: To demonstrate the predictive value of aortic elastic properties for occult CAD diagnosed by MDCT. METHODS: Forty subjects with

Rigid and Elastic taping changes scapular kinematics and pain in subjects with shoulder impingement syndrome; an experimental study.

Rigid and Elastic scapular taping is used in physical rehabilitation of shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). It is believed to reduce pain and normalise scapular movement patterns. However, there is insufficient evidence to support its use. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Rigid and Elastic taping techniques on the scapular kinematics and pain in patients with SIS. Eleven patients with SIS participated in the study. They performed elevation and lowering of the arm in the scapular and sagittal planes under three conditions: Baseline, Rigid taping and Elastic taping. The mov

Penile anatomy and hypotheses of erectile function in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis): muscular eversion and elastic retraction.

The intromittent organs of most amniotes contain variable-volume hydrostatic skeletons that are stored in a flexible state and inflate with fluid before or during copulation. However, the penis in male crocodilians is notable because its shaft does not seem to change either its shape or bending stiffness as blood enters its vascular spaces before copulation. Here I report that crocodilians may have evolved a mechanism for penile shaft erection that does not require inflation and detumescence. Dissections of the cloaca in sexually mature male American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) sho

Eccentric strengthening effect of hip-adductor training with elastic bands in soccer players: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Soccer players with weak hip-adductor muscles are at increased risk of sustaining groin injuries. Therefore, a simple hip-adductor strengthening programme for prevention of groin injuries is needed. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effect of an 8-week hip-adductor strengthening programme, including one hip-adduction exercise, on eccentric and isometric hip-adduction strength, using elastic bands as external load. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy, sub-elite soccer players, mean (±SD) age of 22.1 (±3.3) years, were randomised to either training or control. During the mid-season b

Determination of the elastic moduli of thin samples and adherent cells using conical atomic force microscope tips.

The atomic force microscope can detect the mechanical fingerprints of normal and diseased cells at the single-cell level under physiological conditions. However, atomic force microscopy studies of cell mechanics are limited by the 'bottom effect' artefact that arises from the stiff substrates used to culture cells. Because cells adhered to substrates are very thin, this artefact makes cells appear stiffer than they really are. Here, we show an analytical correction that accounts for this artefact when conical tips are used for atomic force microscope measurements of thin samples. Our bottom ef

Retrospective comparison of titanium elastic nail (TEN) and reconstruction plate repair of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures.

BACKGROUND: Titanium elastic nails (TENs) are commonly used to repair displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. Although several clinical studies have shown that the use of TENs is more effective and less invasive than traditional plate fixation, high rates of complications associated with TENs have been reported. This retrospective study compared the use of TENs with reconstruction plates in the treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2005 to July 2007, 141 patients with displaced midshaft clavicular fractures were treated with TEN or plate fi

Clinical evaluation of end caps in elastic stable intramedullary nailing of femoral and tibial shaft fractures in children.

BACKGROUND: Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) may be complicated by the loss of reduction following push out of the nails at the entry site in unstable femoral and tibial fractures, especially in older and heavier children and following technical failures. An end cap system addressing this complication was evaluated clinically. METHODS: In a retrospective case series, 49 femoral and five tibial fractures in 54 pediatric patients treated by ESIN and end caps were documented in two European tertiary centers. End caps were used to interlock standard ESIN nails. The results were evalua
