: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Understand the anatomy and embryology of the external ear. 2. Understand the anatomic causes of the prominent ear. 3. Understand the operative maneuvers used to shape the external ear. 4. Be able to sequence the otoplasty for consistent results. 5. Understand the possible complications of the otoplasty procedure. Correction of prominent ears is a common plastic surgical procedure. Proper execution of the surgical techniques is dependent on the surgeon's understanding of the surgical procedure. This understanding is best found…

OBJECTIVE: A multitude of female congenital anomalies are uncommon. However, their impact on reproduction can be profound. The aim of this review is to remind the practicing physician of the clinically relevant embryology and summarize the studies that look at the impact of such various anomalies on a woman's fecundity. We review particular surgical therapies that possibly may improve fertility in such women.
DESIGN: Review and critique of available studies in which particular surgical therapies were done and whether they truly improved fertility in these women with congenital reproductive an…

A persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common thoracic venous anomaly. It is a persistent remnant of a vessel that is present as a counterpart of normal right-sided superior vena cava (SVC) in early embryological development but normally disappears later. Although it can be easily diagnosed by the characteristic chest radiographic appearance of a pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) passed through it after being inserted into the left subclavian or jugular vein, its diagnosis is usually missed by the presence of normal (right) SVC and the passage of the catheter on the right side.

Recent experience with a bronchogenic cyst occurring in a subcutaneous suprasternal location presents an additional entity to be considered in the differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, and correlates with the embryology of the developing tracheobronchial tree and sternum. A review of subcutaneous bronchogenic cysts shows 41 cases have been described in the English literature. Most were noted in the suprasternal location; all but one were first noted in infancy or childhood. There is a definite male predominance. Sinus tracts were present in four cases, but none extended into the che…

Duplication of the internal maxillary artery (IMAX) results from a failed regression of either the embryological superficial or deep ring and is reported to be exceedingly rare. We present a patient with this rare anatomical variant who was treated by endovascular technique in the clinical context of an acute oropharyngeal hemorrhage.

Split notochord syndrome (SNS) is a very rare congenital anomaly. This report describes a male newborn with a neuroenteric cyst in the posterior mediastinum and multiple vertebrae anomalies presenting with respiratory failure and pulmonary hypertension. This report also discusses the embryological development and the etiologic theories of SNS.

An unusual case of thyroglossal duct cyst occurring in the tongue base and fistulizing to the anterior tongue is presented. No previous descriptions have been found in the literature associating this embryological remnant with fistulization to the anterior tongue. The treatment was successfully accomplished through a combined transhyoid and intraoral approach.

A coloboma refers to an embryological defect of the eye due to incomplete closure of the embryological fissure in development. Lenticular colobomas are defects of the capsular bag due to an absence of zonules, resulting in a characteristic notching of the lens; however, they are not true colobomas as there is no loss in lens tissue. These defects are often congenital and are typically seen in a unilateral and inferonasal position. In this case report, we outline the presentation of a 38-year-old female patient who had been experiencing reduced vision and floaters in one eye following an injury

The coracobrachialis muscle (CB) is a phylogenetically conserved component of the anterior compartment of the upper limb, offering critical insights into evolutionary anatomy, developmental biology, and human morphological variation. This mini review synthesizes findings from comparative anatomical studies, embryological data, cadaveric dissections, and clinical reports to explore the CB's morphology, ontogeny, and medical relevance. Among tetrapods, the CB consistently originates from the coracoid process and inserts into the humerus, with interspecies morphological adaptations reflecting spe

To investigate the role of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in cases with isolated teratozoospermia, and to provide reference for infertile patients to choose a reasonable insemination program. From January 2018 to December 2022, 433 couples received assisted reproductive assistance in the Department of Reproductive Medicine of our hospital. Among them, 81 patients presented isolated teratozoospermia (other sperm parameters were normal). These underwent IVF/ICSI, and differences in embryological data were compared between groups. 60 patients with moderate

The ethmoidal foramina (EF), located on the medial orbital wall along the frontoethmoidal sutures, are critical anatomical landmarks for surgeries involving the medial orbital wall. This review aimed to review the surgical anatomy of the EF, including their embryology and radiology. Although the frontoethmoidal sutures mostly have two foramina passing through them, there are reports of single foramen or multiple, up to six foramina. These foramina provide a passage for the ethmoidal arteries and nerves, branches of ophthalmic arteries and nerves. The surgical guideline "24-12-6" is based on th…

We report a 6-month-old female infant with deletion of chromosome 22q11.2 (DiGeorge/VFS TUPLE 1), normal atrial arrangement with concordant atrioventricular connection, pulmonary atresia, large subaortic ventricular septal defect, diminutive native pulmonary arteries, a characteristic weird-shape right aortic arch with arch-on-arch appearance and figure of 8 configuration. We presented the cardiac computed tomographic angiographic and cardiac angiographic features. Using Autodesk 3ds Max 2018 software, we explained and illustrated the speculative embryologic etiology of this bizarre aortic arc

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bone tissue is defined as connective tissue with an embryological derivation that reflects the origin of the fascial system. The surface of the bone tissue makes the bone system the largest organ in the human body, whose most representative cells are the osteocytes. It is essential for the general health of the individual, influencing different organs and systems, through the hormonal paracrine production of the osteocytes. In the modern scientific panorama, bone tissue has been included in the definition of fascial continuum only in one of our articles. The intent of this art

Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment. To the surgeon, the embryology and anatomy should be absolutely clear as dissection may be challenging due to the close proximity and variable course of the cystic stalk to major neck vessels and nerves.

Peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBD) are autosomal recessive disorders in humans characterized by skeletal, eye and brain abnormalities. Despite the fact that neurological deficits, including peripheral nervous system (PNS) defects, can be observed at birth in some PBD patients including those with PEX10 mutations, the embryological basis of the PNS defects is unclear. Using a forward genetic screen, we identified a mouse model for Pex10 deficiency that exhibits neurological abnormalities during fetal development. Homozygous Pex10 mutant mouse embryos display biochemical abnormalities related

von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) patients develop highly vascular tumors, including central nervous system hemangioblastomas. It has been hypothesized that the vascular nature of these tumors is the product of reactive angiogenesis. However, recent data indicate that VHL-associated hemangioblastoma neoplastic cells originate from embryologically-arrested hemangioblasts capable of blood and endothelial cell differentiation. To determine the origin of tumor vasculature in VHL-associated hemangioblastomas, we analyzed the vascular elements in tumors from VHL patients. We demonstrate that isolated

The hooked element in the pes of turtles was historically identified by most palaeontologists and embryologists as a modified fifth metatarsal, and often used as evidence to unite turtles with other reptiles with a hooked element. Some recent embryological studies, however, revealed that this element might represent an enlarged fifth distal tarsal. We herein provide extensive new myological and developmental observations on the hooked element of turtles, and re-evaluate its primary and secondary homology using all available lines of evidence. Digital count and timing of development are uninfor
