Amoebic Liver Abscess: A disease native to Oman?

OBJECTIVES: Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) is endemic to many areas of the world. This study sought to investigate the epidemiology, presentation, laboratory tests and imaging characteristics of ALA in Oman and ultimately determine whether it is native to Oman or originated abroad. METHODS: This case series study was conducted at the Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, from January 2013 to December 2017 with patients older than 13 years and having a discharge diagnosis of ALA. Patient data were extracted from the Royal Hospital patient database. RESULTS: 22 patients were included in the study-18 Oman

An encapsulated bulky abdominal abscess due to amoeba.

We report a rare case of amebiasis associated with an intraabdominal abscess without colitis, an intestinal perforation, or other extraintestinal amebiasis. A patient was admitted with cirrhosis and a history of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and was found to have a high C-reactive protein (CRP) level. Dynamic CT and ultrasound echo findings showed an intraabdominal abscess. No intestinal lesions or extraintestinal lesions other than the intraabdominal abscess were observed. Blood cultures and puncture fluid cultures were negative for bacteria. However, microscopic examination of the

[Diagnostic difficulties in amebic liver abscess].

Amebiasis is a widespread parasitic infection caused by the human-specific protozoan Entamoeba histolytica (E.- histolytica). Tropical and subtropical regions with poor socioeconomic and sanitary conditions belong to endemic areas. The highest rates of E. histolytica infection are observed in India, Mexico, Africa, some parts ofCentral and South America. Up to 90% of infections remain asymptomatic, about 10% of patients develop amebic colitis. About 10% of symptomatic individuals may present with an extraintestinal manifestation, mostly amebic liver abscess (ALA). Clinical symptoms of ALA appe…

Fulminant necrotizing amoebic colitis.

The emergence of amoebiasis is of great public health concern since it has the potential to become endemic in developed nations essentially due to increased travel to endemic areas, emigration of people from affected nations and increase in the HIV-AIDS population. Fulminant necrotizing amoebic colitis is a rare and relatively less-known form of amoebiasis typically associated with very high morbidity and mortality, as is presented in the current case.

Amebic infection in humans.

Clinical human infections with the protozoa Entamoeba histolytica is still estimated to occur in 50 million people worldwide, of which approximately 100,000 die annually. Although most clinical symptoms are due to involvement of the large intestine, 1 % present with involvement of the liver in the form of a liver abscess, a potentially fatal condition. Distinguishing an invasive form (E. histolytica) from a morphologically identical non-invasive one (E. dispar) requires molecular or enzymatic characterization. Further, the pattern of infection, interpretation of presence of antibodies in the h…

Hepatic amebiasis.

Amebiasis can be considered the most aggressive disease of the human intestine, responsible in its invasive form for clinical syndromes, ran … s to the diagnosis of hepatic abscesses. The conclusive diagnosis is made however by the finding of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites in the pus and by the detection of serum antibodies to the amoeba. During the evolution of hepatic amebiasis, in spite of the availability of highly effective drugs, some important complications may occur with regularity and …

[Amebiasis].

Infections with Entamoeba histolytica do not necessarily cause disease in those infected. The parasite may act as commensal (cysts living in the bowel) or it may cause a broad spectrum of clinical illness. Some of the factors causing overt disease are poorly understood. An acute amebic dysentery is accompanied by bloody stools, abdominal pain and indigestion. The most important extraintestinal complication of an amebic infection is a liver abscess causing severe pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. The diagnosis of an amebic infection is based upon isolation of the parasite from the stools. Extra…

Amoebic antigen in immunodiagnosis and prognosis of amoebic liver abscess.

The detection of amoebic antigen by counterimmunoelectrophoresis is very useful and important in the immunodiagnosis of invasive hepatic amoebiasis. The antigen was demonstrated in 115 (92%) of 125 patients with amoebic liver abscess. All the 19 cases which showed Entamoeba histolytica in the 'pus' were positive for the antigen and 96 of 106 samples negative for the parasite by smear and culture were also positive for the antigen. In none of the controls was a falsepositive reaction obtained. 12 of 13 liver biopsy specimens were also positive for antigen. The persistence or disappearance of th…

Relationship between serum IgE levels and intestinal parasite load in African populations.

Serum IgE determinations and coproparasitological analyses were carried out on 161 individuals from two distinct ethnic groups (Hutus and Twas) from two regions in Rwanda (North and South). The cumulative parasitosis index (calculated for each individual as the sum of the scores for the four most frequent intestinal parasites) show a linear relation with IgE levels up to a plateau, with no clear pattern of correlation between the score for any given parasite and the IgE level. Such a direct quantitative (but not qualitative) relation reproposes the question on the role of IgE immunoglobulins i
