[Approximation to the dynamics of meningococcal meningitis through dynamic systems and time series].

Meningococcal meningitis is subjected to epidemiological surveillance due to its severity and the occasional presentation of epidemic outbreaks. This work analyses previous disease models, generate new ones and analyses monthly cases using ARIMA time series models. The results show that disease dynamics for closed populations is epidemic and the epidemic size is related to the proportion of carriers and the transmissiveness of the agent. In open populations, disease dynamics depends on the admission rate of susceptible and the relative admission of infected individuals. Our model considers a l

A systematic review of transmission dynamic studies of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in non-hospital residential facilities.

BACKGROUND: Non-hospital residential facilities are important reservoirs for MRSA transmission. However, conclusions and public health implications drawn from the many mathematical models depicting nosocomial MRSA transmission may not be applicable to these settings. Therefore, we reviewed the MRSA transmission dynamics studies in defined non-hospital residential facilities to: (1) provide an overview of basic epidemiology which has been addressed; (2) identify future research direction; and (3) improve future model implementation. METHODS: A review was conducted by searching related keywords

[Use of spatial analysis tools in the epidemiological surveillance of American visceral leishmaniasis, Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, 1998-1999].

The control of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) is based on combating the vector and eliminating the domestic reservoir of the focus area - defined as 200 meters around human or canine cases. This paper discusses the use of spatial analysis techniques in the epidemiological surveillance of AVL in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, in order to propose a model for territorial epidemiological surveillance, reformulating current control strategies. The results showed that AVL transmission was not homogeneous; human cases were more frequent in areas with higher canine prevalence rates. Vector dispers

Modeling the effects of varicella vaccination programs on the incidence of chickenpox and shingles.

Two possible dangers of an extensive varicella vaccination program are more varicella (chickenpox) cases in adults, when the complication rates are higher, and an increase in cases of zoster (shingles). Here an age-structured epidemiologic-demographic model with vaccination is developed for varicella and zoster. Parameters are estimated from epidemiological data. This mathematical and computer simulation model is used to evaluate the effects of varicella vaccination programs. Although the age distribution of varicella cases does shift in the simulations, this does not seem to be a danger becau

Representation and Bias in Artificial Intelligence Models for Thyroid Cancer: A Systematic Review.

Background: There has been growing interest in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in thyroid cancer care, given its potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, predict patient outcomes, and personalize treatment plans. However, bias introduced during the development of AI algorithms used for thyroid cancer care poses a significant challenge, as biased datasets can lead to disparities in diagnosis and treatment recommendations, particularly in underrepresented populations. This systematic review evaluates the current landscape of AI models for thyroid cancer, focusing on demographic

Effects of air pollution on emergency visits for acute otitis media among children: a case-crossover study in Chongqing, China.

BACKGROUND: Many epidemiological studies have demonstrated the short-term effects of air pollution on acute otitis media (AOM) in children, but few studies have explored the association between AOM and air pollution in Chinese children. This study aimed to analyze the effects of air pollution on emergency visits for AOM among children through a time-stratified case-crossover design in Chongqing, China. METHODS: The outpatient medical records of children from nine main urban districts who presented with AOM between December 22, 2018 and December 21, 2021 were collected from the Children's Hosp

Prediction of risk of hearing loss by industry noise from cross-sectional and longitudinal data.

BACKGROUND: Noise exposure at work can damage hearing at speech-frequency essential for speech perception, leading to communication difficulties, life quality decline, and adverse mental and cognitive outcomes. Early identification of individuals at high risk is crucial for occupational health management. This study aims to develop prediction models to estimate the risk of speech-frequency hearing loss among noise-exposed workers. METHODS: We developed and validated multimodal prediction models using epidemiological, hearing assessment, and genetic information from shipyard workers. The train

Type of early life adversity confers differential, sex-dependent effects on early maturational milestones in mice.

Early life adversity (ELA) increases risk for negative health outcomes, with sex disparities in prevalence and form of ELA experienced and risk for neuropsychiatric pathology. ELA comes in many forms (e.g. parental neglect/loss, limited access to resources) but whether disparate forms of ELA have common effects on outcomes, and if males and females are equally affected, remains unknown. Epidemiological studies often fail to accurately account for differences in type, timing, and duration of adversity experienced. Rodent models allow precise control of many of these variables. However, differen

Estimating the Natural History of Cervical Carcinogenesis Using Simulation Models: A CISNET Comparative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced cervical cancer (CC) is not directly observable, yet the age of HPV acquisition and duration of preclinical disease (dwell time) influences the effectiveness of alternative preventive policies. We performed a Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network (CISNET) comparative modeling analysis to characterize the age of acquisition of cancer-causing HPV infections and implied dwell times for distinct phases of cervical carcinogenesis. METHODS: Using four CISNET-cervical models with varying underlying structures but f

Infections and autoimmune diseases.

The high percentage of disease-discordant pairs of monozygotic twins demonstrates the central role of environmental factors in the etiology of autoimmune diseases. Efforts were first focussed on the search for triggering factors. The study of animal models has clearly shown that infections may trigger autoimmune diseases, as in the case of Coxsackie B4 virus in type I diabetes and the encephalomyocarditis virus in autoimmune myositis, two models in which viruses are thought to act by increasing immunogenicity of autoantigens secondary to local inflammation. The induction of a Guillain-Barré sy

EPINEST, an agent-based model to simulate epidemic dynamics in large-scale poultry production and distribution networks.

The rapid intensification of poultry production raises important concerns about the associated risks of zoonotic infections. Here, we introduce EPINEST (EPIdemic NEtwork Simulation in poultry Transportation systems): an agent-based modelling framework designed to simulate pathogen transmission within realistic poultry production and distribution networks. We provide example applications to broiler production in Bangladesh, but the modular structure of the model allows for easy parameterization to suit specific countries and system configurations. Moreover, the framework enables the replication

Geographical Information Systems risk assessment models for zoonotic fascioliasis in the South American Andes region.

The WHO recognises Fasciola hepatica to be an important human health problem. The Andean countries of Peru, Bolivia and Chile are those most severely affected by this distomatosis, though areas of Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela are also affected. As part of a multidisciplinary project, we present results of use of a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) forecast model to conduct an epidemiological analysis of human and animal fasciolosis in the central part of the Andes mountains. The GIS approach enabled us to develop a spatial and temporal epidemiological model to map the disease in the ar

A nonlocal West Nile virus model with nonlocal free boundary conditions driven by both mosquitoes and birds.

This paper presents a novel West Nile virus model that has more extensive free boundary conditions and also takes into account the impact of infected mosquitoes on the free boundary, both of which are firsts in West Nile virus modeling. Specifically, the free boundary conditions independent of the dispersal kernel functions in the equations, bring new challenges to the dynamical analysis of spreading-vanishing, especially for the case where the basic reproduction number R 0 ≤ 1 , which involves new ideas and techniques for dynamics analysis. Moreover, due to the consideration of the impact o

Effect of Preventive Measures and Heterogeneity of Sexual Contacts on Zika virus Transmission.

The global spread of the Zika virus (ZIKV), compounded by the absence of effective antiviral drugs or widely available vaccines, highlights the importance of understanding its transmission dynamics to implement effective public health strategies. The transmission of the Zika virus is attributable to the heterogeneity of sexual contacts and the lack of miracle drugs or vaccines. We develop a degree-based mathematical network model which takes account of heterogeneity of sexual contacts and the adoption of preventive measures. We derive analytical expressions for the basic reproduction number fo

Optimal control of bi-seasonal hand, foot and mouth disease in mainland China suggests transmission from children and isolating older infected individuals are critical.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a Class C infectious disease that carries particularly high risk for preschool children and is a leading cause of childhood death in some countries. We mimic the periodic outbreak of HFMD over a 2-year period-with differing amplitudes-and propose a dynamic HFMD model that differentiates transmission between mature and immature individuals and uses two possible optimal-control strategies to minimize case numbers, total costs and deaths. We parameterized the model by fitting it to HFMD data in mainland China from January 2011 to December 2018, and the basic

Misspecified poisson regression models for large-scale registry data: inference for 'large n and small p'.

Poisson regression is an important tool in register-based epidemiology where it is used to study the association between exposure variables and event rates. In this paper, we will discuss the situation with 'large n and small p', where n is the sample size and p is the number of available covariates. Specifically, we are concerned with modeling options when there are time-varying covariates that can have time-varying effects. One problem is that tests of the proportional hazards assumption, of no interactions between exposure and other observed variables, or of other modeling assumptions have

The economics of effective AIDS treatment in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The speed with which Thailand has scaled up public provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been unprecedented, with more than 80 000 individuals on treatment at the end of 2006 through Thailand's National Access to Antiretroviral Program for People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPHA). This paper projects the cost effectiveness, the affordability and the future fiscal burden of NAPHA to the government of Thailand under several different policy scenarios until the year 2025. METHODS: An economic/epidemiological model of access to ART was constructed, and this composite model was ca

Evolution of global polio eradication strategies: targets, vaccines, and supplemental immunization activities (SIAs).

BACKGROUND: Despite multiple revisions of targets and timelines in polio eradication plans since 1988, including changes in supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) that increase immunity above routine immunization (RI) coverage, poliovirus transmission continues as of 2024. METHODS: We reviewed polio eradication plans and Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) annual reports and budgets to characterize key phases of polio eradication, the evolution of poliovirus vaccines, and the role of SIAs. We used polio epidemiology to provide context for successes and failures and updated prior m

Spatiotemporal clusters and dengue hotspots in the Philippines: a nationwide analysis spanning 2017-2024.

BACKGROUND: Spatiotemporal epidemiology of dengue remains poorly understood in the Philippines and there is scarcity of a nationwide spatiotemporal cluster analysis. This study utilizes long-term nationwide data to identify the spatial patterns and spatiotemporal clustering of dengue incidence in the Philippines. METHODS: We obtained monthly data from January 2017 to December 2024 across all provinces from the Philippine Epidemiology Bureau. The data were analyzed via spatial analysis techniques, specifically Moran's I and local Getis-Ord Gi* to determine spatial autocorrelation and hotspots.
