Polymorphic mimicry - When Herpes Isn't Just Herpes: Genital Herpes Mimicking Secondary Syphilis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI), affecting approximately 13% of the global population. While classic presentations involve painful vesicular clusters, HSV-2 can present atypically or trigger immune-mediated reactions like erythema multiforme (EM). These polymorphic presentations can mimic other STIs, particularly secondary syphilis, leading to diagnostic momentum and delayed appropriate therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male with a history of recurrent genital ulcers presented to the emergency department with w…

Folliculitis after smallpox vaccination: a report of two cases.

Rashes are frequent and potentially serious adverse consequences of smallpox vaccination. Life-threatening rashes must be differentiated from benign, self-limiting ones. Generalized vaccinia, erythema multiforme, and folliculitis are distinct self-limiting entities but may be difficult to differentiate from one another. Two cases of folliculitis after smallpox vaccination are described. Both patients received anthrax vaccination within 2 weeks before smallpox vaccination. Both presented with a papulopustular rash 9 days after smallpox vaccination. Although the rashes were initially diagnosed a…

Fuchs Syndrome: Medical Treatment of 1 Case and Literature Review.

Fuchs syndrome is a particular type of erythema multiforme major; the lesions are only found on the mucosae and specifically affect oral, ocular, and genital mucosae. The cause is not always immediately apparent, which is why this pathology requires a rigorous, detailed clinical examination to eliminate a differential diagnosis. The severity of the symptoms, particularly of oral and ocular symptoms, requires immediate treatment. The treatment of this pathology requires a multiple-drug regime. Through a clinical case study, the objective of this work is to help guide practitioners when diagnosi…

Plasma activity of interleukin-10 in drug-induced cutaneous reactions.

Plasma concentrations of interleukin-10 (IL-10) were examined in 126 patients with drug-induced cutaneous reactions: maculopapular eruptions (ME), erythema multiforme (EM), erythema multiforme coexisting with erythema nodosum (EMN), drug-induced urticaria (DU), hyperergic vasculitis (HV), Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN). Activity of the cytokine was measured using the immunoenzymatic ELISA method: a) in the acute stage of disease before treatment was administered, and b) after clearing of skin lesions, after treatment. In the acute stage of disease highly elev…

Natural history, management and complications of herpes labialis.

Infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common worldwide problem. Primary infection with HSV-1 rarely causes significant problems although widespread involvement in atopic eczema can be life-threatening as may associated encephalitis. Keratoconjunctivitis, pharyngitis and hepatitis can also complicate primary infection. Twenty to 40% of the population at some stage have recurrent orolabial infections with HSV although in only 1% of these cases is this recurrence severe. Recurrent erythema multiforme appears to be associated with HSV-65% of patients are thought to have preceding herpes l…

[Comment on the contribution by L. Weber: Yersinia exanthema].

Lutz Weber has described Yersinia exanthema, a distinctive dermatological disorder characterized by three or all of the following signs: 1. A typical erythema-multiforme-like eruption, particularly on the neck, shoulders, and arms, 2. Erythema nodosum, 3. Conjunctivitis, particularly on the nasal side of the conjunctiva, 4. Arthralgia. The case presented here concerns a patient who satisfied all of the criteria for Yersinia exanthema and in whom no infection could be demonstrated.

[Cutaneous symptoms of ulcero-haemorragic rectocolitis and of Crohn's disease (author's transl)].

The association between ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease and various abnormalities of the skin is reviewed. Erythema nodosum and pyoderma gangrenosum are the most specific external manifestations and thereby the ones of greatest diagnostic value. Erythema multiforme is probably a manifestation of drug hypersensitivity. Many other dermatosis have been observed in association with these gastrointestinal disorders. However, these associations are not statistically significant. A specific "aphtous colitis" may be observed in the course of Behçet's disease.

Histopathology of exogenous and systemic contact eczema.

The histopathology of systemic allergic contact dermatitis is usually characterized by spongiosis. A number of other much less common to rare histological findings have also been reported, including erythema multiforme-like eruption, vasculitis, urticaria, and miscellaneous groups.

[Yersiniosis].

A survey was undertaken about bacteriologic, epidemiologic and clinical features of infections caused by Yersinia. Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are gram negative rods of the enterobacteriaceae family. The number of cases of these infections has increased considerably in the past few years. Erythema nodosum often occurs after an enteritic infection by Yersinia. Other skin manifestations are erythema exsudativum multiforme, erythema figuratum and "drug-eruption-like exanthema". Moreover, Yersinia-arthritis may occur. In one particular case a Reiter-syndrome was describ
