OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is an important and often underemphasized symptom in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Sleep fragmentation, i.e., arousals and disruptions in sleep architecture, is common in patients with OSA and may potentially contribute to their fatigue. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a serious, but rare condition with substantial maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. It occurs in the third trimester or early postpartum period. The purpose of this study was to test whether modafinil is effective in alleviating the symptoms of fatigue in postpolio patients, because it has been helpful for such symptoms in other neurologic disorders.
