Fear causes tears - perineal injuries in home birth settings. A Swedish interview study.

BACKGROUND: Perineal injury is a serious complication of vaginal delivery that has a severe impact on the quality of life of healthy women. The prevalence of perineal injuries among women who give birth in hospital has increased over the last decade, while it is lower among women who give birth at home. The aim of this study was to describe the practice of midwives in home birth settings with the focus on the occurrence of perineal injuries. METHODS: Twenty midwives who had assisted home births for between one and 29 years were interviewed using an interview guide. The midwives also had exper

Influence of contingency awareness on neural, electrodermal and evaluative responses during fear conditioning.

In an fMRI study, effects of contingency awareness on conditioned responses were assessed in three groups comprising 118 subjects. A differential fear-conditioning paradigm with visual conditioned stimuli, an electrical unconditioned stimulus and two distractors was applied. The instructed aware group was informed about the contingencies, whereas the distractors prevented contingency detection in the unaware group. The third group (learned aware) was not informed about the contingencies, but learned them despite the distractors. Main effects of contingency awareness on conditioned responses em…

Effect of passenger position on fear of danger experienced during sudden bus stops.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of bus passengers' positions on their fear of danger when a bus stopped suddenly. A temporary bus running course with one bus stop was set up on the campus of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT). The bus ran the course 14 times with the bus stopping twice during the course, once at the bus stop and again just after re-starting from the bus stop. The driver was asked to brake more strongly than usual when stopping. Sixteen students (15 males and 1 female) between the ages of 18 and 21 years participated. In turn, all par…

Age-specific associations between dental fear and dental condition among adults in Finland.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to study whether dental condition, measured by numbers of sound, decayed, missing, and restored teeth, was associated with dental fear, and whether age, dental attendance, and/or gender modified this association. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample (n=8,028) comprised Finnish adults aged 30 years and older and the study included people (n=6,335) who participated in a home interview and a clinical dental examination. Dental fear was measured by the question: "How afraid are you of visiting a dentist?" Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the ass…

Electromagnetic indication of hypervigilant responses to emotional stimuli in blood-injection-injury fear.

Blood phobia differs from other phobias and anxiety disorders in that no attentional bias for blood-related stimuli has been consistently observed. The present study aimed at clarifying this characteristic by investigating electromagnetic brain activity to blood-related and -unrelated pictures in high blood-fearful and non-fearful individuals. Relative to non-fearful controls, high blood-fearful subjects displayed more intense occipito-parietal activation 190-250ms after picture onset, which was interpreted as non-specifically enhanced sensory encoding of visual stimuli. Blood-related stimuli …

Fear recognition ability predicts differences in social cognitive and neural functioning in men.

By testing the facial fear-recognition ability of 341 men in the general population, we show that 8.8% have deficits akin to those seen with acquired amygdala damage. Using psychological tests and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we tested the hypothesis that poor fear recognition would predict deficits in other domains of social cognition and, in response to socially relevant stimuli, abnormal activation in brain regions that putatively reflect engagement of the "social brain." On tests of "theory of mind" ability, 25 "low fear scorers" (LFS) performed significantly worse than 25 …

Speeded detection and increased distraction in fear of spiders: evidence from eye movements.

Anxiety patients exhibit attentional biases toward threat, which have often been demonstrated as increased distractibility by threatening stimuli. In contrast, speeded detection of threat has rarely been shown. Therefore, the authors studied both phenomena in 3 versions of a visual search task while eye movements were recorded continuously. Spider-fearful individuals and nonanxious control participants participated in a target search task, an odd-one-out search task, and a category search task. Evidence for disorder-specific increased distraction by threat was found in all tasks, whereas speed…

Contents of childbirth-related fear among couples wishing the partner's presence at delivery.

In order to explore the contents of childbirth-related fears, a survey was carried out among 216 pairs of prospective parents who opted for the presence of the partner at delivery. Each couple took part in a three-class parentcraft course during the third trimester. During the first antenatal class, couples were asked to fill in a questionnaire with inquiries about specific contents of fear they might have in relation to pregnancy, childbirth and relationship with their partner after childbirth. Each item of the questionnaire called for an answer from a five-grade scale of fear such as 'absolu…

Disrupted fear regulation in insomnia disorder revealed by arousal estimation from skin conductance.

Insomnia disorder (ID) is a common sleep-wake disorder marked by persistent dissatisfaction with sleep quality or quantity. Previous studies have shown that sleep plays a critical role in emotion regulation, particularly in fear extinction. This study aims to characterize ID using estimates of the sympathetic arousal state derived from skin conductance (SC)-based observations, and to compare two observation models: the marked point process (MPP) model and the MPP coupled with continuous (MPP+Cont) model. We utilize SC data from a fear conditioning and extinction procedure involving 24 individu…

Neural mechanisms of fear memory precision and generalization: from auditory cortex to amygdala.

Identifying neural networks that infer safety versus danger is of great interest across multiple disciplines. Recent research has started to elucidate the brain networks mediating fear discrimination and generalization. Here, we focus on the contribution of the auditory cortices to auditory fear memory and discrimination processes. We first review studies showing that the primary auditory cortex (Te1) is involved in fear memory for tones with complex perceptual features only. Conversely, Te1 is essential for fear discrimination across all types of acoustic stimuli. These studies support the id…

Timing of exercise differentially modulates fear memory and hippocampal neurotransmitters in male rats.

Exercise promotes neurogenesis and enhances memory consolidation while reducing the retention of aversive memories and anxiety-like behaviors. While our previous work found that acute exercise alters neurotransmitter concentrations, including dopamine and serotonin, in a time-of-day-dependent manner, the long-term effects of chronically timed exercise on neurotransmitter dynamics and behavioral phenotypes remain unclear. To examine whether the daily timing of a chronic exercise intervention modulates its impact on neurotransmitter profiles and fear responses, male rats were conditioned using a…

[Age-related features of postural control among elderly women with fear of falling.].

Fear of falling, also known as basophobia, is a significant but often underappreciated issue among elderly women. This study seeks to identify age-related features of postural control components (PCCs) among women between the ages of 63 and 74 with a fear of falling (FoF). We examined a total of 146 women between the ages of 63 and 74 who had postural instability and FoF (the latter confirmed by a psychologist). The first group included women who were 63 to 69 years old, while the second one was made up of those between 70 and 74 years old. PCCs were assessed with the use of the Smart Equitest…

Emotional stress increases GluA2 expression and potentiates fear memory via adenylyl cyclase 5.

Stress can alter behavior and contributes to psychiatric disorders by regulating the expression of the GluA2 AMPA receptor subunit. We have previously shown in mice that exposure to predator odor stress elevates GluA2 transcription in cerebellar molecular layer interneurons (MLIs), and MLI activity is required for fear memory consolidation. Here, we identified the critical involvement of adenylyl cyclase 5, in both the stress-induced increase in GluA2 in MLIs and the enhancement of fear memory. We found that noradrenaline release during predator odor stress activates AC5 and downstream PKA-CRE…

Relationships between Patellofemoral Pain, Fear-Avoidance Beliefs, and Time Spent Walking and Sitting.

INTRODUCTION: Walking and sitting are frequent activities of daily living and necessary functions for service members. Patellofemoral pain (PFP), one of the most common knee conditions in the military, can be exacerbated by these activities and therefore, impact return to duty and warfighter performance. The purpose of this study was to assess relationships between baseline PFP levels, fear-avoidance beliefs, and weekly walking and sitting frequency in individuals participating in a large clinical trial for PFP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one individuals with PFP enrolled in the trial (20 m…

Environmental Enrichment Has Age- and Sex-Specific Effects on Fear Regulation in Mice.

Previous research has sought to understand the mechanisms by which early life adversity disrupts later behavioral function. Yet less has been done to investigate the effects of positive experiences such as environmental enrichment. Here, we examined the effects of brief (2 weeks) or extended (8 weeks) environmental enrichment on discrimination, fear inhibition, and fear extinction during adolescence or adulthood. Two conditions of enrichment were used: a "Hut" group received a polycarbonate Hut in the home cage throughout the duration of the experiment, while a "Variable" group received a poly…

Gastrin-releasing peptide is essential for generalization of auditory conditioned fear under stress.

Fear generalization, which allows animals to respond adaptively to cues similar to original threatening ones, is generally beneficial for survival. However, an inability to distinguish between threat and safety, leading to the overgeneralization of fear to non-threatening stimuli, is maladaptive and is implicated in anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The neuropeptide gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) is known to modulate fear memory under stress, yet its role in response to intense aversive stimuli remains less understood. In this study, we used GRP knockout (Grp-/-…
