About feeding children: factor structure and internal reliability of a survey to assess mealtime strategies and beliefs of early childhood education teachers.

BACKGROUND: Children spend a substantial amount of time in early care and education (ECE) settings and may eat a majority of their diet in this setting. While there are several instruments focused on measuring factors of the ECE environment that may influence diet and weight outcomes, there are few comprehensive, valid, and reliable measures for collecting self-report of ECE providers' feeding practices. The purpose of this study was to establish the factor structure and internal reliability of a survey developed to measure practices and beliefs of ECE providers relative to feeding children.

Direct Feeding at the Breast Is Associated with Breast Milk Feeding Duration among Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND: In spite of high rates of initiating breast milk feeding (BMF) among preterm infants, a significant rate of discontinuation occurs shortly after discharge. AIM: To investigate the effect of mode (direct feeding at the breast vs. expressing) and exclusivity (breast milk combined with formula vs. breast milk only) as well as maternal perceptions on the duration of BMF among preterm infants. METHODS: The study included mothers whose infants were born before 32 weeks gestation, between January 2012 and August 2015 at Sheba Medical Center (SMC). Perinatal data were collected retrospec

A dose- rather than delivery profile-dependent mechanism regulates the "muscle-full" effect in response to oral essential amino acid intake in young men.

BACKGROUND: The anabolic response of skeletal muscle to essential amino acids (EAAs) is dose dependent, maximal at modest doses, and short lived, even with continued EAA availability, a phenomenon termed "muscle-full." However, the effect of EAA ingestion profile on muscle metabolism remains undefined. OBJECTIVE: We determined the effect of Bolus vs. Spread EAA feeding in young men and hypothesized that muscle-full is regulated by a dose-, not delivery profile-, dependent mechanism. METHODS: We provided 16 young healthy men with 15 g mixed-EAA, either as a single dose ("Bolus"; n = 8) or in

Clinical costs of feeding tube placement.

BACKGROUND: Although small-bore tube placement is common, insertion can lead to serious complications. We investigated the use of radiographs, fluoroscopy, feeding tubes, and complications associated with blind feeding-tube placement. METHODS: The electronic and paper records of adult patients receiving a small-bore feeding tube in 2005 were retrospectively reviewed for the following variables: demographics, desired location (gastric or postpyloric), number of radiographs, number of tubes per individual, time interval between medical prescription, tube placement and delivery of the diet, comp

Influence of breast feeding, and adapted and hydrolyzed formulas on biliary bile acids in newborn guinea pigs.

BACKGROUND: The type of feeding can differently influence bile acid ontogeny during the period of physiologic cholestasis that characterizes early human development. AIM: To investigate the effects of feeding from birth, conventional or partially protein hydrolyzed cow's milk formulas were compared with breast milk regarding bile acid concentration and the composition of gallbladder bile in newborn guinea pigs. METHODS: Forty newborn guinea pigs were allocated to one of three different feeding regimens: breast milk (n = 14), intact protein formula (n = 13) and partially protein hydrolyzed fo

Feed restriction as a model for small intestinal permeability in nursery pigs.

Reduced feed intake is a hallmark of many animal diseases and environmental conditions and has been shown to cause intestinal barrier dysfunction. As there are several markers and assays to evaluate intestinal barrier function, feed restriction may present a potential model to validate and compare multiple in vivo, ex vivo, and tissue markers of intestinal integrity. Forty-eight barrows (9.7 kg initial body weight) were fed for 7 d at feed intakes of 100%, 75%, 50%, or 25% of expected ad libitum feed intake. After which urine, and blood were taken for in vivo lactulose:mannitol analysis. Addit

Vaccines against blood-feeding nematodes of humans and livestock.

This paper summarises the progress towards vaccine development against the major blood-feeding nematodes of man and livestock, the hookworms and Haemonchus contortus, respectively. The impact of the diseases and the drivers for vaccine development are summarized as well as the anticipated impact of the host immune response on vaccine design. The performance requirements are discussed and progress towards these objectives using defined larval and adult antigens, many of these being shared between species. Specific examples include the Ancylostoma secreted proteins and homologues in Haemonchus a

Endotoxemia after elective surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm and the effect of early oral feeding.

BACKGROUND: Endotoxemia after major vascular surgery has been suggested to be caused by the passage of bacterial endotoxins through the gut. Early enteral feeding has been reported to prevent bacterial translocation. Therefore, we investigated the incidence of endotoxemia in 12 patients with normal liver function after elective surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm. METHODS: Blood samples were taken from the brachial vein of each patient before surgery, 1 day after surgery, and 3 days after surgery. The endotoxin concentration was measured using a chromogenic endotoxin-specific assay. RESULT

Optimal conditions for determination of bacitracin, bacitracin zinc and bacitracin methylene disalicylate in animal feed by ultra-performance liquid tandem mass spectrometry.

An integrated method combining solid-phase extraction (SPE) with ultra-performance liquid tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) has been established for quantifying bacitracin (BTC), bacitracin zinc (BZ), and bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) in animal feed. A pretreatment procedure that can effectively, quickly, and simultaneously extract and purify BTC, BZ, or BMD in feed was developed for the first time through the optimization of extraction and SPE conditions. After extraction with acetonitrile + methanol + 15 % ammonia solution (1:1:1, v:v:v) and dilution with EDTA solution (1.5 mmo

[Placement of nasoenteral feeding tubes under electrocardiographic guidance in critically ill patients].

INTRODUCTION: Nasoenteral feeding is the preferred method to feed critically ill patients. Infusion of diet into duodenum instead of stomach is considered safer to avoid pulmonary aspiration. To place the tip of the tube inside duodenum, one can perform external maneuvers, aided by the tube's guidance, or use fluoroscopy and/or endoscopy. Spontaneous passage of the tip of the tube into duodenum, even with administration of pro-kinetic drugs, is achieved in <30% of cases. OBJECTIVE: Assessing helpfulness of electrocardiographic tracing in placement of a nasoduodenal tube in critically ill pati

Recent nutritional strategies and feed additives to stimulate proper rumen development in young goats.

Domestic goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) are important producers of milk, meat, and hair. The early weaned goats may face fundamental issues related to the incomplete rumen development to deal with the transition from liquid feeds into solid feeds. Therefore, the present review focuses on the nutritional strategies and feeding methods to enhance the proper rumen morphological development, fermentation efficiency and microbiota structure in young goats. The enhanced rumen development caused by these nutritional strategies can have lasting positive effects on their overall growth performance and h…
