A clinical profile and the course and outcome with therapy of 126 infants and children with gastroesophageal reflux (GER), diagnosed at a median age of 2.5 months and followed for 1.5 to 3.5 years is presented. Features included repeated regurgitation or rumination (99%), signs suggesting esophageal pain (49%, excessive crying "colic," sleep disturbance, Sutcliffe-Sandifer syndrome, respiratory symptoms 42%), failure to thrive (18%), and minor hematemesis (18%). Forty-four cases of diverticulosis of the colon were detected among 2,662 cases examined by barium enema in Tohoku University. This corresponds to 1.7% in frequency. On the other hand, 21 cases were found among 1,511 cases examined in Hirosaki University, giving 1.4% in frequency. It was more frequent in the male. Clinical features and validity of a duodenofiberscopic examination for the diagnosis of carcinoma of the papilla of Vater were evaluated on 13 cases preoperatively diagnosed endoscopically. A 40-year-old male patient suffered from traumatic optic neuropathy in his right eye. Scanning laser polarimetry was arranged at 2 weeks, 9 weeks, 13 weeks, 24 weeks, and 34 weeks after the trauma.
