Neural correlates of memory in depression measured by brain perfusion SPECT at rest.

AIM: Brain metabolism activated studies have indicated associations between memory and the anterior cingulate cortex and hippocampus in patients with depression. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate memory function, measured as performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R), and its relationship to brain perfusion using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) at rest in patients with depression. METHODS: The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) and WMS-R were measured for 17 patients with depression by an independent clinical evaluation team. V

Disrupted white matter integrity in heroin dependence: a controlled study utilizing diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Fractional anisotropy (FA) via diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can quantify the white matter integrity. Exposure to addictive drugs, such as alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and nicotine has been shown to alter FA. White matter abnormalities have been shown, but it remains unclear whether the white matter FA is altered in heroin dependence. METHODS: Utilizing DTI, we investigated the FA difference between heroin-dependent and control subjects by a voxel-based strategy. The FA values of the identified regions were calculated from the FA image of each subject and were co

White and gray matter abnormalities in the brain of patients with fibromyalgia: a diffusion-tensor and volumetric imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: To use a combination of magnetic resonance diffusion-tensor imaging (MR-DTI) and MR imaging of voxel-based morphometry (MR-VBM) in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) to determine microstructural and volume changes in the central neuronal networks involved in the sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational characteristics of pain, anxiety, memory, and regulation of the stress response. METHODS: Thirty female patients with FMS and 30 healthy female control subjects were studied. Predefined areas of the brain were measured for volume of gray matter by MR-VBM and for diffu

Reduced gray matter volume in the frontotemporal cortex of patients with early subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a persistent infection of the central nervous system by the measles virus. Patients in the initial stages of SSPE show behavioral symptoms and usually normal cranial MR imaging findings. We aimed to investigate the gray matter volume changes in patients with early SSPE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with SSPE with normal cranial MR imaging findings and 30 sex- and age-matched control subjects were included in the study. Clinical parameters of the patients were quantified by using a neurologic disability index (N

An fMRI study of the interaction of stress and cocaine cues on cocaine craving in cocaine-dependent men.

Acute stress is associated with relapse in cocaine addiction, possibly through the activation of craving-related neural circuitry. Neural responses to cocaine cues and acute stress were investigated in an fMRI study. Ten male participants mentally re-enacted personalized scripts about cocaine use and a neutral experience both with and without a stressor present (anticipation of electrical shock). Interaction analysis between script type and stress condition revealed greater activation of the posterior cingulate cortex and of the parietal lobe during the cocaine script in the presence of the st

Functional brain imaging of a complex navigation task following one night of total sleep deprivation: a preliminary study.

Several neuroimaging studies have demonstrated compensatory cerebral responses consequent to sleep deprivation (SD), but all have focused on simple tasks with limited behavioral response options. We assessed the cerebral effects associated with SD during the performance of a complex, open-ended, dual-joystick, 3D navigation task (simulated orbital docking) in a cross-over protocol, with counterbalanced orders of normal sleep (NS) and a single night of total SD (approximately 27 h). Behavioral performance on multiple measures was comparable in the two sleep conditions. Functional magnetic reson

Neuropathological evidence for ischemia in the white matter of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in late-life depression.

BACKGROUND: Signal hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging in late-life depression are associated with treatment resistance and poor outcome. These lesions are probably vascular in origin and proposed sites for vascular damage include the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). METHODS: We therefore examined white matter in these areas for microvascular disease and evidence of ischemia using intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). We obtained postmortem tissue from elderly depressed (n = 20) and control (

Anticipation of reward in a nonaversive differential conditioning paradigm and the brain reward system: an event-related fMRI study.

Findings from animal as well as human neuroimaging studies suggest that reward delivery is associated with the activation of subcortical limbic and prefrontal brain regions, including the thalamus, the striatum, the anterior cingulate and the prefrontal cortex. The aim of the present study was to explore if these reward-sensitive regions are also activated during the anticipation of reinforcers that vary with regard to their motivational value. A differential conditioning paradigm was performed, with the presentation of a rewarded reaction time task serving as the unconditioned stimulus (US).

Mapping of architectonic subdivisions in the macaque monkey, with emphasis on parieto-occipital cortex.

The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) of the macaque monkey contains numerous areas associated with different aspects of cortical function, including motor control as well as visual, somatosensory, vestibular, and possibly auditory processing. This study focuses largely on the architectonic organization of areas within and near the IPS, but also examines remaining portions of the hemisphere with which the IPS is interconnected. We charted the location of up to 72 architectonically distinct areas plus numerous architectonic zones in individuals over a region covering most of the cortical hemisphere. I

PET shows that odors are processed both ipsilaterally and contralaterally to the stimulated nostril.

The olfactory nerve is the only cranial nerve with established ipsilateral primary cerebral anatomical projections. Whether these projections correspond to the functional pathways for monorhinal processing of odor perception is, however, unknown. We therefore studied cerebral blood flow (rCBF) with [15O]butanol-PET in 18 healthy females during monorhinal smelling of single odors (OS) and odorless air (AS). Compared with AS, OS activated right amygdala and piriform cortex (confluent cluster), right orbitofrontal cortex, left insula, right thalamus, and anterior cingulate. A post hoc analysis sh

Changes in regional cerebral blood flow during self-paced arm and finger movements. A PET study.

The purpose of this study was to identify the functional fields activated in relation to the self-paced proximal and distal arm movements. The regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with positron emission tomography (PET) and 15O-labelled H2O (H2(15)O) in eight healthy subjects. All subjects performed the following three tasks: (1) repetitive opposition of thumb and index finger of the right hand, (2) repetitive co-contraction of biceps and tricepts brachii muscles of the right arm, and (3) rest. The mean rCBF change images for each task minus control was calculated and fields of sig

SPECT regional cerebral blood flow alterations in naltrexone-precipitated withdrawal from buprenorphine.

The effects of naltrexone-precipitated withdrawal from buprenorphine on behavior and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were studied in 11 opiate-dependent patients. Patients initially received buprenorphine, 2 mg sublingually, every day for 7 days. They were then challenged sequentially with placebo and naltrexone, 25 mg orally, before single photon emission computed tomography with technetium-99m-d,l-hexamethyl-propylene amine oxime as tracer. Behavioral ratings of withdrawal severity were made before and after naltrexone/placebo administration. Naltrexone produced significantly greater sig

Altered cerebral gamma-aminobutyric acid type A-benzodiazepine receptor binding in panic disorder determined by [11C]flumazenil positron emission tomography.

CONTEXT: The benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor system has been implicated in the pathophysiologic mechanism of panic disorder (PD) by indirect evidence from pharmacological challenge studies and by direct evidence from single-photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography neuroimaging studies. However, the results of previous neuroimaging studies are in disagreement, possibly because of experimental design limitations related to sample size, matching between patients and controls, and confounding medication effects. OBJECTIVE: To compare BZD receptor binding between subjects

Gender differences in regional cerebral activity during the perception of emotion: a functional MRI study.

Whether men activate different brain regions during various emotions compared to women or whether gender differences exist in transient emotional states has been the subject of only few studies. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate gender differences during the perception of positive or negative emotions. The experiment comprised two emotional conditions (pleasant/unpleasant visual stimuli) during which fMRI data were acquired. Altogether, 38 healthy volunteers (19 males, 19 females) were investigated. When subtracting the activation values of men f

Localized volume reduction in prefrontal, temporolimbic, and paralimbic regions in schizophrenia: an MRI parcellation study.

Functional and structural abnormalities of the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) in patients with schizophrenia have been repeatedly reported. However, one remaining issue is whether gray matter volume reduction in ACG exists to an extent comparable with, or even in excess of, that in other prefrontal and temporolimbic regions. High-spatial-resolution magnetic resonance imaging was performed on patients with schizophrenia (n=27) and on age-, gender-, and parental socioeconomic-status-matched healthy control subjects (n=27). After the gray and white matter were semiautomatically segmented, whole p

Differential glutamate modulation in the anterior mid-cingulate cortex of healthy adults during inhibitory motor control utilizing a novel interleaved baseline control condition: a ¹H fMRS study.

Response inhibition, or the ability to suppress "pre-potent" behavioral responses, is subserved by both motor and inhibitory control processes and linked to the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC). We utilized an adapted Go/No-Go paradigm combined with proton functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H fMRS) of the dACC to investigate differences in glutamate level between an All-Go (non-selective motor responding) and Go/No-Go (selective motor responding) condition, both compared to a no-response condition. This allowed disambiguation of the excitatory neurochemistry underlying motor vs.

Age- and alcohol-related differences in adolescent neurometabolite levels.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for neurometabolite maturation as well as the initiation of alcohol use. However, despite its importance for long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, the impact of alcohol use during adolescence on neurometabolites remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory study using 3T proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to examine age- and alcohol-related associations with six neurometabolites in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) that are involved in key neural functions: glutamate + glutamine (Glx), GABA plus macromolecules

Differences in biochemical metabolism and cognitive function between bipolar I and bipolar II disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to characterise neurometabolic differences between bipolar disorder I (BD-I) and bipolar disorder II (BD-II), and to examine their associations with cognitive function. METHODS: A total of 50 patients diagnosed with BD-I, 80 patients with BD-II, and 50 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for this study. Metabolite concentrations—specifically N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and choline-containing compounds (Cho)—were measured in the prefrontal white matter (PWM), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and thalamus through proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS). Regional Excitatory-Inhibitory Balance Relates to Self-Reference Effect on Recollection via the Precuneus/Posterior Cingulate Cortex-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Connectivity.

Self-related representation can enhance perception and memory-a phenomenon known as the self-referential effect (SRE). While SRE has been linked to the activation of the default mode network (DMN), including the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex (Pcu/PCC) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), the underlying neurochemical processes of DMN activations remain unclear. The balance of excitation and inhibition (E/I balance) within brain circuits is crucial for cognition and may play a role in the SRE. We examine whether the ratio of glutamate/glutamine (Glx) to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) conc
