[Bone loss in type 2 diabetes mellitus--diabetic osteopenia].

Loss of bone mineral content has been recognized as one of the chronic complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus, although its mechanism is not fully documented. A negative calcium balance due to both enhanced urinary calcium excretion and decreased intestinal calcium absorption has been occurred because of alteration of vitamin D metabolism and/or decreased parathyroid function. From the view point of bone cell metabolism, osteoblastic bone formation is suppressed by alternation of vitamin D metabolism, hypoparathyroidism, chronic hyperglycemia and insufficient insulin action. On the other ha

Chondroblastoma of a metacarpal bone mimicking an aneurysmal bone cyst: a case report and a review of the literature.

Chondroblastoma of the metacarpal bone has been extremely rare and only seven cases have been reported in the English literature. Here we reported the eighth case of a chondroblastoma that developed on the first metacarpal bone of the right hand of a 21-year-old man. Radiographs showed an expansile osteolytic lesion with a multilocular appearance. In MR images, the lesion showed low intensity in T1 and high intensity in T2-weighted images with multiple fluid-fluid levels, which are findings resembling those of an aneurysmal bone cyst. From the pathological findings, however, it was recognized

Geographic variation in gorilla limb bones.

Gorilla systematics has received increased attention over recent decades from primatologists, conservationists, and paleontologists. Studies of geographic variation in DNA, skulls, and teeth have led to new taxonomic proposals, such as recognition of two gorilla species, Gorilla gorilla (western gorilla) and Gorilla beringei (eastern gorilla). Postcranial differences between mountain gorillas (G. beringei beringei) and western lowland gorillas (G. g. gorilla) have a long history of study, but differences between the limb bones of the eastern and western species have not yet been examined with

The Accuracy of the Osteological Sexing of Cremated Human Remains: A Test Based on Grave Goods from East Lithuanian Barrows.

The accuracy of the sex determination of cremated human remains is one of the vital parameters for archaeologists and skeletal anthropologists dealing with cremations. Few studies have so far aimed at testing it. In the present paper, the accuracy of the sexing techniques was assessed by paralleling biological sex (identified morphologically) to gender (presumed on the basis of the grave goods which accompanied the deceased). A collection of cremated bones from East Lithuanian barrows (c. fourth/fifth--eleventh/twelfth centuries AD) was employed. The fragmentary nature and poor state of the bo

Differential expression of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF-II messenger ribonucleic acid in growing rat bone.

Insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) are among the most abundant growth factors found in bone. Although their local production has been implicated in growth and development, localization of the cells that express these proteins is not well documented. We have studied, by in situ hybridization, the temporal and spatial expression of IGF-I and IGF-II mRNA in rat long bones at different stages of postnatal bone development. In 2-day-old rats, IGF-II was highly expressed in cartilage and in the mesodermal structures that surround the bone. At later stages of bone development, the IGF-II

Load transfer analysis of the distal radius from in-vivo high-resolution CT-imaging.

Prevention of osteoporotic bone fractures requires accurate diagnostic methods to detect the increase in bone fragility at an early stage of osteoporosis. However, today's bone fracture risk prediction, primarily based on bone density measurement, is not sufficiently precise. There is increasing evidence that, in addition to bone density, also the bone microarchitecture and its mechanical loading conditions are important factors determining the fracture risk. Recently, it has been shown that new high-resolution imaging techniques in combination with new computer modeling techniques based on th

The role of bone scanning in the detection of metastatic calcification: a case report.

Metastatic calcification associated with renal failure is well described. Bone scanning agents accumulate to various degrees within extraskeletal sites of metastatic calcification. The authors describe a patient with polycystic kidney disease resulting in renal failure, with the subsequent development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and metastatic calcification. Bone scintigraphy revealed abnormal uptake in both lungs, the right leg, and the right hand.

Bone scan in mastocytosis: case report.

A 45-year old man with well-documented systemic mastocytosis showed generalized symmetric increased activity on bone imaging. These scan findings are grossly indistinguishable from those of patients with renal osteodystrophy or secondary hyperparathyroidism. The images of the hands, however, failed to show the changes observed in secondary hyperparathyroidism. The mechanism for this intense activity is thought to be due to aberrant new-bone formation.

A new implementation of digital X-ray radiogrammetry and reference curves of four indices of cortical bone for healthy European adults.

UNLABELLED: Digital X-ray radiogrammetry performs measurements on a hand radiograph in digital form. We present an improved implementation of the method and provide reference curves for four indices for the amount of bone. We collected 1662 hand radiographs of healthy subjects of age 9-100 years. PURPOSE: The digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) method has been shown to be efficient for diagnosis of osteoporosis and for assessment of progression of rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this work is to present a new DXR implementation and reference curves of four indices of cortical bone and to compa

The Bones of Children With Obesity.

Excess adiposity in childhood may affect bone development, ultimately leading to bone frailty. Previous reports showing an increased rate of extremity fractures in children with obesity support this fear. On the other hand, there is also evidence suggesting that bone mineral content is higher in obese children than in normal weight peers. Both adipocytes and osteoblasts derive from multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and obesity drives the differentiation of MSCs toward adipocytes at the expense of osteoblast differentiation. Furthermore, adipocytes in bone marrow microenvironment releas

Tissue engineering of a small hand phalanx with a porously casted polylactic acid-polyglycolic acid copolymer.

In this study, we evaluate a porous polylactic acid-polyglycolic acid (PLGA) polymer in tissue engineering a small hand phalanx. The PLGA polymer was processed with a unique solvent cast/salt-leaching method in the shape of a little finger distal phalanx. An 85% polylactic acid (PLA)/15% polyglycolic acid (PGA) copolymer was determined to be the most favorable mixture for creating a small digital phalanx in precise shape and size. The pore sizes averaged 250-425 microm. Bovine periosteum was wrapped around each phalangeal polymer. Chondrocytes were injected into the articular end. Six construc

The management of pit viper envenomation of the hand.

Snakebites are common among the rural population of developing countries. The severity of venomous snakebites depends on several factors, including the location of the bite, the amount of venom injected, and the effectiveness of the initial therapy. Snakebites frequently occur in the extremities with approximately two thirds of envenomations occurring in the upper extremities. In this study, we presented 12 cases of hand reconstruction after Vipera snakebites and discussed how to minimize functional loss and maximize hand rehabilitation. Twelve patients bitten by Vipera between 2001 and 2006 w
