Fifty persons of the age of 13 to 18 who had been stuffing themselves with steams of solvents, were medically examined. There were used medical (psychiatrical, neurological, internal) and psychological examinations--with the D. Weschler's scale of intelligence and questionnaire interviews obtaining from those who underwent the examinations and their parents. It was stated that the beginning of the intoxication was mostly preceded by the difficulties in social adjustment. This paper describes a computer-controlled system to regulate solvent vapour concentrations in experimental inhalation devices. A rabbit inhalation injury model using a dual tracer radioactive isotope technique (Rowland et al., 1986), has been utilized with small- and medium-sized molecular weight tracers. Transcutaneous oxygen (PtcO2) measurements were made on 46 patients with severe ischaemia of the lower limbs and on 17 age-matched controls. Values breathing air, 100 per cent oxygen and the rate of change of PtcO2 breathing oxygen were recorded. Of 29 below knee amputations there were 4 failures; 16 had PtcO2 values less than 35 mmHg, but 12 of the 16 healed. Our field studies show that indoor air concentrations of volatilized trichloroethylene (TCE) can be substantial when TCE-contaminated water is used domestically. Using a model shower, increases in TCE water concentrations, water temperature and drop path (time) increased the steady-state air TCE concentrations. Volatilization was incomplete and the rates were comparable to predicted ones.
